00:03While some residents of Tangu in Myanmar use makeshift rafts,

00:07others are forced to wade through waist-high water.

00:11Almost a quarter of a million people in the country

00:14have been forced from their homes by the flooding brought by Typhoon Yagi.

00:23I lost my rice, chickens and ducks.

00:26I don't care about the other belongings.

00:29Nothing else is more important than the lives of people and animals.

00:33If the water rises too high here, I will untie my cows and set them free.

00:41The scale of the disaster has prompted a rare appeal by Myanmar's military junta.

00:46It's under Western sanctions and has previously blocked humanitarian aid.

00:51But now state media has reported that the junta is calling for international assistance.

00:58Typhoon Yagi has caused chaos across much of Southeast Asia.

01:02In Laos, the Mekong River burst its banks,

01:05while in Thailand, emergency services have been using helicopters, boats and jet skis

01:11to rescue residents trapped by high water and mudslides.

01:19have been joined by an army of volunteers for the clean-up.

01:24I spent hours cleaning. It was exhausting.

01:27I'm 70 years old. Cleaning like this is really tiring.

01:32Officials here in Tien Quang say they want to clear the debris within three days

01:37and they're prioritising school buildings so children can get back to class as soon as possible.

01:43Vietnam was hit especially hard by Typhoon Yagi.

01:47More than 250 people have been confirmed dead and dozens are still missing.
