Flooding in Sudan leaves dozens dead and more stranded

00:00These people are fleeing flooding in the town of Tokar near the Red Sea in northeastern Sudan.

00:06They do so with difficulty. The town has been severely impacted after floods caused by heavy

00:12rains weeks ago. Residents report people are stranded due to the blockage of main roads.

00:21We are no longer in danger, but our relatives and friends are stuck and surrounded by floodwater.

00:26There is a lack of medical and humanitarian relief, shelter and food.

00:36Rescue operations have been mostly individual.

00:40We were surprised to see only small machines working on the roads.

00:46The collapse of the Abaab Dam near Port Sudan, around 40 kilometers further north a week ago,

00:53has also wreaked havoc in the region. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed

00:58was in Port Sudan on Thursday to highlight the country's humanitarian needs generally.

01:03It has one of the world's biggest displacement crises linked to the ongoing civil war.

01:07We have impending crisis around famine, we are not getting medical supplies in,

01:13where there are health crises, but more importantly we have to remember the suffering

01:18of the people and here to do this with the government of Sudan.

01:24Fighting erupted in the country in April last year. Aid groups say it has prevented

01:29humanitarian supplies reaching the 25 million Sudanese people facing severe hunger.
