00:00Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the High Court today that he is not ashamed of his Indian heritage,

00:07emphasising that it does not change the fact that he is Malay.

00:11He also said that his father was born and registered as a Malay in Malaysia.

00:15This was in response to a question by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zayed Hamidi's lawyer,

00:20who asked whether Mahathir was embarrassed by his South Indian ancestry.

00:25In his testimony, Mahathir said he was unsure if his grandfather or ancestors come from Kerala,

00:31as his family never seriously discussed the matter.

00:34He said Zayed gave the impression that he was lying about his name,

00:38saying that his name is indeed Mahathir Mohamad and not Mahathir, son of Iskandar Kutty.

00:44Mahathir further denied a claim in Barry Wain's book, Mahathir the Malaysian Maverick,

00:49where the author claimed that Mahathir's father bore the name Mohamad Iskandar Kutty

00:54and was of Jawi Peranakan descent.
