Hi kids! Today we will learn about some interesting animals that live in the sea. So let's start!
00:11
Kids, dolphins, porpoises, manatees and whales are mammals that live in water. That is, they
00:22
are not fish but mammals. These are porpoises. These are manatees. These are whales. These
00:36
are dolphins. They have streamlined bodies and powerful tails, which they move up and
00:45
down to propel themselves through the water. Their forelimbs are paddle-like flippers
00:53
used for balance and steering. They have no hind limbs. Now let's learn why whales are
01:06
not fish but mammals. Kids, if I ask you, are whales fishes or mammals, all of you will
01:15
say a fish. But it's not the case. Whales are actually mammals because we know fishes
01:26
can breathe inside the water too, through their gills, bails. Whales cannot breathe
01:34
inside water. They need to come out of the water to breathe. That is why whales are not
01:42
fish but mammals. Also, fish cannot hold their breath for long inside the water. All whales
01:54
breathe through the blowhole on the top of their head. That gets air from above the water
02:01
to their lungs. The puff of mist produced when whales exhale is called blow. Blowholes
02:15
are surrounded by muscles that keep the hole closed underwater and open at the surface.
02:26
Some whales can stay underwater up to an hour before coming to the surface to breathe. Kids,
02:34
do you know how many of the species of whales are endangered? That is, very small population
02:42
of whales are left in the world. As many people used to hunt them for meat, whale oil and baleen.
02:52
Whale oil is called blubber and baleen is a body part of whales which is used to strain
03:01
food from the water which goes inside the body of the whale. Whale oil is used in candles and
03:12
lamps in previous times and baleen was used in clothing. Extensive hunting of whales led to the
03:23
extinction of many species of whales. Some species of whales are extinct means not even a single.
03:34
That is, not even a single whale of that species is left in the world. Today, whales are protected
03:45
and most nations have stopped hunting or killing whales to protect them. Instead,
03:52
people are thrilled to see whales, so whale watching is now a profitable business in coastal
04:00
communities. So kids, we must ensure protection of every animal species as every animal species
04:09
is unique and provides beauty to our environment. We must not hurt any animal species. Now you may
04:18
go ahead and take a quiz to learn more. Bye-bye!
