Bones and Muscles
00:05
Each part of our body is important.
00:11
We do different things using different parts of our body.
00:19
We use both our hands and legs to run,
00:25
swim,
00:27
climb a tree
00:30
skip a rope.
00:33
Eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin are our sense organs.
00:44
They help us to sense i.e. feel the world around us.
00:51
Kids, have you ever thought what these body parts are made of
00:57
or how they are connected?
01:02
Our body is made up of millions of tiny cells.
01:08
Cells differ in size and shape.
01:14
Now try and do this.
01:17
Touch the front part of your leg below the knee
01:22
and then touch the back of it.
01:27
The front is hard whereas the back of the leg is soft.
01:34
Both the sides you touched would have made you feel
01:38
that there are different things inside your body.
01:43
The harder part at the front of your leg which you felt is the bone
01:51
and the softer part at the back is the muscle.
01:58
Together they make you perform most of the tasks you do in your daily lives.
02:07
Movements like picking up a book,
02:11
scribbling something in notebook
02:14
and moving knees towards chest are possible because of the bones in our body.
02:23
Let us learn more about bones.
02:27
Bones have a hard outer layer made of calcium.
02:35
All the bones are connected with each other.
02:41
These connections or meeting points are called joints.
02:49
We can bend our body around the joints.
02:53
We can feel the joints too.
02:57
Do you know a baby has around 270 bones and an adult has 206?
03:09
This is because some of our bones fuse as we grow up.
03:17
The bone joining our hip and knee,
03:21
the thigh bone also called femur is the largest bone in our body.
03:30
All human beings have the same structure of bones.
03:35
All the bones join together to form the skeleton.
03:41
The skeleton is the framework which gives shape and support to our body.
03:51
It helps us to move,
03:55
gives muscles a place to attach themselves
04:01
and protects the soft organs inside our body from injury.
04:10
Did you know that a bone doctor is called an orthopedist?
04:17
Now let us learn about the softer part of our body i.e. the muscles.
04:26
Our bones cannot move on their own.
04:31
They are covered with body tissues that expand and contract thus causing movement.
04:39
These body tissues are called muscles.
04:47
Muscles make up nearly half the weight of our body.
04:54
They provide the push and pull which the bones need to bring about the movement.
05:04
There are more than 600 different muscles in our body.
05:08
The only muscle exposed on the outside is our tongue.
05:15
If we blink our eye, we move 200 muscles at one time.
05:24
The smallest muscle is inside our ear.
05:28
It is the muscles that help you to smile, frown, yawn and kiss.
05:38
There are more than 30 muscles in our face.
05:45
The muscles in our body are covered by a layer of skin.
05:51
There are some parts in our body which are neither hard nor soft.
05:58
Touch your nose or the earlobe.
06:05
These are neither bones nor muscles but are called cartilages.
06:13
These parts tend to be soft.
06:16
These parts tend to be a little flexible.
06:22
When we grow, it is actually our bones and muscles growing.
06:29
We can make sure that our bones and muscles grow fast and remain in a very good condition
06:37
by eating a healthy meal, exercising and maintaining a correct posture.
06:46
Now let us understand the word posture.
06:52
The way we sit, stand or move is called posture.
06:59
Good posture is very important.
07:02
When we sit, we need to keep our back straight against the back of the chair
07:09
and keep our feet flat on the ground.
07:14
When we stand, we should keep our shoulders and back straight.
07:21
When we walk, we should keep our body straight and swing our toes.
07:28
We should keep our body straight and swing our arms from the shoulders.
07:36
Once we start sitting or standing in the wrong posture,
07:41
our bones and muscles get used to that shape
07:45
and in the future we will find it difficult to sit or stand straight.
07:51
So, we should practice a good posture every day till it becomes a habit.
08:01
So, always remember, healthy food, exercises and proper posture are needed to keep us strong and fit.
