00:07Living things form the living world on the earth.
00:13They are a very important part of the natural environment.
00:20Living things on the basic level are made up of non-living substances.
00:29The natural things live in a delicate balance with the non-living things.
00:37This needs to be maintained for the healthy survival of the earth.
00:45Man has wiped out forests in order to make place for more industries and settlements.
00:57This activity is known as deforestation.
01:04Deforestation has disturbed the relationship between natural things in the environment.
01:15It also disturbs the plant and animal life in their natural habitat.
01:25Living things can be divided into two broad categories.
01:32Plants and animals.
01:36Although they both exhibit the characteristics of living things,
01:43they are different in many ways.
01:50Difference between plants and animals.
01:56Green plants make their own food and are called the producers on the earth.
02:06The green pigment chlorophyll is found in their leaves.
02:14Chlorophyll helps plants to trap sunlight,
02:19that is required to make food for the plant in presence of water and air.
02:29Animals do not make their own food,
02:35but depend on plants, other animals or both for their food.
02:45In general, they are termed as consumers.
02:52Animals are either herbivores, that is plant eaters,
03:00or carnivores, that is animal eaters.
03:07Living beings such as man, crow and some other animals feed on both plants and animals
03:21and are called omnivores, that is both plant and animal eaters.
03:31Plants take in air through tiny openings called stomata on the leaves.
03:41Animals have different breathing organs.
03:46For example, man breathes through nose and lungs,
03:51fishes breathe through gills and insects breathe through air holes.
03:59Plants show slow and subtle movements.
04:06Such movements include growing of shoots, flowers, turning in the direction of the sun etc.
04:20Animals show more visible movements like walking, crawling, hopping, running
04:32in search of food, security and shelter.
04:40Some plants regenerate through stems, leaves, roots and bulbs.
04:51Plants also reproduce by seeds.
04:57Animals reproduce by directly giving birth to their babies or by laying eggs.
05:09Young ones hatch out from the eggs.
05:15Plants do not have sense organs like the animals but respond to touch and light.
05:28Usually animals have five sense organs, nose, tongue, ears, eyes and skin.
05:42Some animals may lack one or two of these sense organs.
05:51Plants go through a cycle of growth throughout their life
05:58in the form of development of branches, flowers, new leaves etc.
06:08Animals after reaching their adult stage of life cycle stop growing in size.
