Preparing for Beryl in Mexico

Storm Chaser Aaron Rigsby was live from Tulum, Mexico, where conditions were still nice as people prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Beryl.

00:00conditions are quite nice. Explain what you're seeing in terms of the surf and

00:03the overall conditions.

00:06Yeah, absolutely. Good evening. And yeah, pretty much today is like a

00:09normal beach to everybody. The sun is shining. It's hot and humid outside.

00:13There's even some folks behind me playing in the beach enjoying the nice

00:16weather before things start to get rough here in the next couple of days.

00:18Now over further north to Cancun didn't see too much, at least this morning. As

00:23far as preparations go, I think they're thinking it's gonna slide a little bit

00:26south of there. But those cities such as to own play a day. Carmen, we

00:30actually saw a bunch of people starting to board up their windows. They were

00:34taking those preparations, moving a lot of those loose items off of their

00:37porches off of those businesses so they don't get blown around during the

00:41hurricane. And it's been the same story here in saloon. And I expect that to

00:44continue into tomorrow and into tomorrow evening. Now, I haven't heard

00:48anywhere from, you know, any sources that there's any kind of evacuation

00:52orders going on right now. This is a very high touristy spot, and I had a

00:55lot of people coming down here on vacation, whether it be for weddings or

00:58their family vacation that are probably gonna have to look into alternative

01:02plans here in the next couple of days going into Friday. Aaron, has there

01:05been like a sense of urgency again with people getting again, packing up,

01:11perhaps adventuring inland or perhaps taking their plans elsewhere that

01:14you've seen?

01:17Not as of yet. You know, today it's been a relatively normal day. There's

01:20been a fair amount of traffic. There hasn't really been an increase of

01:24people and supply shortages on those shelves like we typically see in the

01:28U. S. The sense of urgency today really doesn't seem to be that high, but it's

01:32one of those things where I've noticed before covering these hurricanes is a

01:35lot of times people will wait until the last second to move inland and make

01:39those alternative plans. So I suspect tomorrow is gonna be a little bit

01:42different of a story, especially carrying on into Thursday night and

01:46into Friday morning. I would expect to see a lot less people on the roadways

01:49and definitely a lot more closures of these beaches. And speaking of plans,

01:53Aaron, what is your plan in terms of a barrel? Are you gonna stay into Tulum?

01:57Are you gonna trek your way north or south?

02:01Yeah, so I've been spending the day pretty much scouting out this entire

02:03coastline. There's a lot of uncertainties on where barrel is

02:06actually going to make landfall here and actually within the last couple

02:09hours, despite all the wind shear that we've been talking about and hitting on,

02:13it appears that barrel is actually gaining some strength and gaining some

02:16northern latitude. So as far as long term effects, especially when it gets

02:20into Mexico, we may have to adjust our plans a little bit further north to

02:24play it at Carmen. So right now we're gonna be staying in Tulum and then

02:27we're gonna be keeping a very close eye on that track into tomorrow. But the

02:30goal right now is to ride it out here into loom if it takes that southern

02:34track and we got a few more places highlighted up to the north. All right,
