ANC loses outright majority in South Africa vote

00:03The worst South Africa's ANC party has seen since the end of the apartheid in 1994.

00:09The results prompting the party's political opponents to call for the ANC's leader and

00:13current president Cyril Ramaphosa to step down.

00:16But his allies are showing a united front.

00:18If you come to us with a demand that Ramaphosa must step down as president, that is not going

00:23to happen.

00:25Voters say they've grown frustrated with the ANC over the years because of rising joblessness

00:29inequality and recurrent power outages.

00:33After losing its three-decade-old absolute majority, the ANC will now have to form a

00:38coalition government.

00:40The party's already started negotiations with the Democratic Alliance, who took over 20%

00:45of votes.

00:46And we remain committed to working constructively with those that are prepared to stand with

00:51us in putting the country first.

00:55Former President Jacob Zuma's party, Omkutuwe Sizwe, won a strong 14.6% of the vote, followed

01:01by Julius Malema's EFF, Economic Freedom Fighters, with a score close to 10%.

01:07Both parties say they're open to working with the ANC, under the right conditions.

01:12These results disrupted the markets, sending the runs plummeting.

01:15Investors, meanwhile, wait to see how the new coalition government will play out.

01:20Will it be to both of their advantage to combine with a solid 62% of the vote?

01:27Or would the ANC rather just scrape by at above 50 with a combination of small parties?

01:34These elections also mark a further decline in voter turnout, with less than 60% of voters

01:39casting their ballots this year, compared to 66% in 2019 and over 90% in the country's

01:46first democratic elections 30 years ago.
