Severe weather sweeps through the Midwest

Swiftly moving storms led to numerous tornado warnings throughout the Great Lakes area on May 7.

00:00This storm system is still spinning across South Dakota and North Dakota.

00:05We are still getting pieces of energy around it and that's what's kicking up thunderstorms.

00:09You can see there's a lot of thunderstorms from Iowa through Wisconsin, Illinois,

00:13Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, even Tennessee and North Carolina.

00:18But with these thunderstorms, not all of them are severe.

00:21We're going to go in on some of those severe thunderstorms.

00:24A lot of the warnings fading away in Iowa at this point in time.

00:26We still have some severe thunderstorm warnings going through in places like Wisconsin,

00:32southern Wisconsin, Madison, near a severe thunderstorm warning.

00:35So portions of Dane County, watch out for that.

00:37A lot of activity there.

00:38And as you work your way south then along Interstate 39,

00:42there's still going to be some stormy weather as you get into Illinois.

00:46Farther to the east, so this is where a lot of that severe weather has focused in,

00:49especially across Michigan, southern Michigan,

00:53where near Kalamazoo, we're talking about that FedEx facility in the Portage area,

00:57which is south of Kalamazoo.

00:59So that's where we saw some of these storms that are near Detroit go through first.

01:02And then another wave recently.

01:04So there's actually two rounds there in the Portage area.

01:07Farther south, though, there are still several tornado warnings in place.

01:10And this is where we're concerned with that severe weather threat ongoing right now.

01:14So we'll start from north to south with some of these tornado warnings.

01:17And just to give you an idea here of what is going on with these storms.

01:22Again, we have had at least potential for rotation in many of them,

01:26including this one here that you do see.

01:29This is going to continue to work its way off towards the east.

01:31This was spotted by emergency management there on the ground.

01:35And it's still pushing around 30 to 45 miles per hour,

01:39most of these storms as they trek their way on east.

01:41So that's what we're getting a sense of with this movement.

01:44So if you're in this area, again, you make sure you're seeking that shelter,

01:48Putnam County, Ohio, and portions of Henry County, Ohio.

01:51Farther south, we have another tornado warning.

01:53And this is still working its way off towards the east.

01:56Nine o'clock eastern time is now when this warning last till.

01:59Originally, the storm was warned with this warning off towards the west

02:02as it worked through Mercer County.

02:04And with that warning, we did have storm spotters that saw it on the ground there.

02:08So we do know that this storm certainly can produce a tornado and has that potential too.

02:14And we are seeing at least some indication there of some strong winds

02:18counteracting with one another in the atmosphere.

02:21So the potential there is that rotation could be reaching the ground.

02:24That will cross its way across Interstate 75.

02:27You can see pretty clearly here the couplet near the Greenville area.

02:30Unfortunately, that's still working its way off towards northeast,

02:34warned for a tornado.

02:35I'm expecting they'll probably put another warning on that storm

02:39as we get new radar frames coming in,

02:41because it's getting to the end of that warning at this point in time.

02:44So Dark County is still dealing with that warning.

02:47But I think we'll see another one through eastern Dark County

02:50as we go through the next couple minutes here.

02:52Farther south, pushing our way into Indiana.

02:55By the way, the Ohio-Indiana state line is right here on your screen.

03:00So as you get into Indiana, we do have a couple more tornado warnings unfolding.

03:05This one in Union County, Indiana, and another one here in Franklin County, Indiana.

03:10Both of these here, they are pretty active warnings, unfortunately,

03:14as we deal with this storm system.

03:16This same storm earlier was producing a particularly dangerous situation

03:21as far as the tornado warning.

03:22So basically, we could see, meteorologists could see all the levels of the radar

03:28that there was debris potentially being lofted into the sky.

03:32And so that's why they were concerned about this being a very large storm

03:36with a potentially damaging tornado.

03:37So we're still watching that circulation there,

03:41continuing to deal with this storm as it works its way off towards the east.

03:44So that's another area that you have to keep in mind

03:46we're dealing with this storm.

03:47And I'm going to take you farther out,

03:49because I did want to go back to the one near Greenville.

03:52We did get a new warning with this just in.

03:55And this shows you that Miami County, Ohio and Shelby County, Ohio

03:59are now under that new tornado warning until 9.15.

04:03By the way, this storm is still moving pretty quickly to the east.

04:07They estimate it around 50 miles per hour at the National Weather Service office.

04:11So just to give you a sense of how quickly some of these storms

04:13are working their way through, 50 miles per hour puts us out about there.

04:19So it will work its way through some of these locations

04:21really within the next 15 minutes or so.

04:24Covington, West Covington, Houston, so you can see some of those places on the list.

04:29These are swiftly moving storms in some spots,

04:3140, 50 miles per hour is mostly what we've seen here.

04:34I do want to take you a little bit farther to the south,

04:36because I believe we have some more tornado warnings to cover really quickly

04:40as we go into southern Ohio and Kentucky.

04:44The border between the two, Adams County, Ohio and portions of Lewis County, Kentucky

04:49are under that tornado warning.

04:50So if you're there, you do want to seek your shelter.

04:53Let's talk about where these storms are going to be going here

04:57for the next couple of hours.

04:58We still have tornado watch boxes that are in place through Ohio,

05:02portions of Indiana, even as far south as Kentucky.

05:05So we're not out of the risk for severe weather.

05:07And that's where we've been highlighting here that threat for severe weather

05:10as we go through the night.

05:11Isolated tornadoes, large hail.

05:13These thunderstorms keep sliding their way east into western Pennsylvania,

05:17into portions of West Virginia too.

05:19By the time we get into the morning hours though,

05:21it's a rain threat as it moves off the east coast.

05:24However, there's another risk for severe weather.

05:26Some of the same spots getting into tomorrow,

05:28the Ohio, Mississippi River confluence,

05:30Cape Girardeau, Paducah, Kentucky, Louisville.

05:34Those are the areas that have that high risk for severe weather,

05:37which does include tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.

05:40So a greater level for severe weather as we head through tomorrow.

05:44And there'll be another threat of severe weather into Thursday.
