Severe storms fire up with tornado warnings in the Plains

Tornado warnings were active across multiple counties as AccuPrime aired live on the evening of May 6.

00:02 - We are continuing to track a dangerous

00:10 severe weather threat in the plains tonight.

00:12 An extreme risk of severe weather has been issued

00:15 by our expert meteorologist, which is rare.

00:18 And as AccuWeather severe weather expert,

00:20 Guy Pearson explains, it's not common.

00:23 - The extreme aspect is something

00:25 that we don't use lightly.

00:27 We only use it two, maybe three times a year.

00:29 So if you're in that area, we wanna make sure everybody,

00:32 you already know where your tornado shelters are

00:34 in case you need to go.

00:35 But in addition to tornadoes,

00:38 then there are gonna be strong damaging winds

00:41 from thunderstorms, as well as that giant hail.

00:44 - And again, hail has been one of the risks

00:49 as we've gone through the night.

00:50 We've also had that threat for tornadic activity.

00:54 Already seen some of those thunderstorms, by the way,

00:56 fire up with that severe weather too on the move.

01:01 So as we talk about the storm pattern here,

01:03 it's a low pressure system that's still spinning up.

01:06 It produced at least one report of a tornado

01:09 in Northwestern South Dakota,

01:12 but most of the hail and wind reports,

01:14 as well as tornadic reports,

01:16 have been coming through some of the plains here.

01:18 So that's where we've been keeping an eye

01:20 on these thunderstorms.

01:21 It's still firing up at this point in time.

01:23 And just to put the radar back on for you,

01:26 you can see that line of thunderstorms

01:27 still sliding its way east with it.

01:29 Severe thunderstorm warnings, also tornado warnings.

01:32 And that's what I wanna cover.

01:33 Some of those tornado warnings

01:35 that are currently in place in Oklahoma,

01:37 because we do have a lot of storm chasers

01:39 following those thunderstorms

01:41 as they slide their way on east.

01:43 And we'll take you in a little bit closer

01:46 with the high definition radar,

01:47 because boy, some of these signatures of storms

01:51 are suggesting that it is very likely

01:53 there are tornadoes on the ground here,

01:55 including some of these hooks.

01:56 You can see this one all the way wraps around.

01:58 And then we've also started to see that signature

02:01 more defined on that storm to the southwest.

02:03 So three tornado warnings at this point in time.

02:05 One that goes from Blaine into Kingfisher County,

02:08 Ohio, Oklahoma, rather, until 7.30 Central Time.

02:11 There's a confirmed tornado warning

02:13 where broadcast media has spotted it on the ground

02:16 into Garfield, Oklahoma County, and also Kingfisher County.

02:19 And then as you work your way into Grant County, Oklahoma,

02:22 there's a tornado warning

02:23 which crosses into Interstate 35 Corridor

02:27 in K County, Oklahoma.

02:28 So all of these spots, make sure you're in your safe place

02:31 and ready to heed those warnings.

02:33 There are tornado watch boxes in place

02:36 and severe thunderstorm watch boxes in place

02:39 just for these storms as they continue to work east.

02:42 And that southern threat there

02:43 is particularly concerning for tornadoes.

02:45 As those spotty cells develop,

02:46 it becomes more of a line overnight.

02:49 So that'll mean a rain and wind threat

02:50 through St. Louis into Chicago,

02:52 heading into tomorrow morning.
