Vinnies to absorb variety goods store Green Shed in Canberra

After 10 years, the Green Shed store on Canberra's City Walk has closed for good. The owners of the much-loved shop sourced their stock from the popular Green Shed depots at Mitchell and Hume, which are being taken over by a new operator.

00:08I just bought an old sea chest.

00:10So this is what the old sailors would have used on their sailing ships centuries ago.

00:15The green shed has been a constant in the lives of some shoppers.

00:19I was devastated, really sad.

00:23This part of the city, this is why I come here.

00:27It's repurposing.

00:28You know, we're all too consumer orientated, consumerism, I don't know, yeah.

00:34Repurposing all these gorgeous things that people have loved, we can pass on.

00:37Robin Campbell has worked at the store since day one.

00:41It was only fitting that she saw it through to the end.

00:44It's been such an amazing 10 years.

00:53The St Vincent de Paul Society won the contract to run the green shed depots at Mitchell and

00:58Mugger Lane, where the shop on City Walk sources its stock.

01:19Vinnies is due to take over the depots at Hume and Mitchell from the end of May.

01:24The Society says jobs will be available for all green shed staff should they want one,

01:29but it's not clear how many have taken up the offer.
