Gold Coast arts and culture festival kicks off with whale in the sky

Arts and culture festival Bleach has gone underway on the Gold Coast this morning. It will feature local talent, a Greek feast, and welcomes renowned American artist Jeff Koons.

00:00I'm here at Hodder, the home of the arts on the Gold Coast.

00:05Just one location that's going to come to life over the next 11 days for Bleach Festival,

00:11which is the Glitter Strips Arts and Culture Festival.

00:15Now the festival kicked off this morning with the first light ceremony,

00:19which saw the infamous Sky Whales by Patricia Piccinini go up into the air,

00:27although not too far off the air because it was a little windy this morning.

00:31And today will be the first day of the festival.

00:36Tonight we've got the incredible American artist Jeff Koons here to do an in-person talk

00:43that people can come along to and gain some knowledge from him.

00:48And we also this weekend have an amazing Greek feast,

00:53which will be held right here at Hodder.

00:56And I actually spoke to the festival's artistic director and renowned artist in his own right,

01:03Michael Zavros earlier on, just about what we can expect from that.

01:08So opera is basically a big Greek party that's happening here on the outdoor stage

01:13and around us on Saturday night.

01:16And it's what Greeks do best.

01:18I think it is dancing, feasting, drinking and celebrating family.

01:23How exciting. I'm going to have to get there.

01:26And tell me about what's on tonight.

01:28We've got something really exciting as well.

01:30So today the visual arts part of the festival kicked off.

01:33We had Patricia Piccinini with her Sky Whales.

01:35But tonight we have American artist Jeff Koons in conversation,

01:39which is an incredible event for us.

01:42He's probably the biggest artist in the world and we're very lucky that he's coming to the Gold Coast to speak with us.

01:49It's really an incredible time to be on the Gold Coast and the weather is really showing off for the festival as well.

01:56There'll be plenty of residents and tourists alike coming out to see the visual artwork,

02:02taking in the storytelling and enjoying everything the festival's got to offer.
