"The government's failure to act against vigilante groups will encourage mob justice in Malaysia,"
00:09
says Human Rights Group Lawyers for Liberty.
00:12
This comes after a 35-year-old man was sentenced to six months in prison and fined 12,000 ringgit
00:18
yesterday over a Facebook posting deemed insulting to Islam regarding the sale of socks bearing
00:23
the word "Allah."
00:25
LFL questioned why no action was taken after a Silat instructor and his friends allegedly
00:31
tracked down Chok Wai Lung and intimidated him into confessing, following the online
00:36
leak of his personal details.
00:39
Its director, Zait Malik, said, "While the government is using vague provisions such
00:43
as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act to prosecute people for social media comments,
00:49
it is not taking action against groups threatening and disclosing private information online."
00:55
He said the group should be investigated under Section 503 of the Penal Code for Criminal
01:00
Intimidation, Section 505(b) for statements causing mischief, and Section 233 of the Communications
01:06
and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities.
01:12
Noting Chok's lack of representation, he questioned what steps the authorities took to ensure
01:17
he had the chance to get legal services, especially given the case's high-profile nature.
01:23
Zait also said politicians, particularly those from UMNO, who have been exacerbating the
01:28
issue, should be investigated for their remarks, as they cater to overzealous bigots when it
01:34
comes to racial and religious controversies, despite the potential disastrous long-term
01:38
results it may bring to the cohesion of Malaysian society.
