00:00Wright's group Lawyers for Liberty has rejected a statement by Inspector General of Police

00:06Raza Rudin Hussain that the police are authorized to check a person's mobile phone if there

00:12is suspicion or information suggesting that they have committed a crime.

00:16In a statement, LFL's Public Defense Coordinator Yu Ying Ying said the police cannot check

00:22mobile phones except in the course of an ongoing investigation or search.

00:28She said that Raza Rudin's statement was legally untenable, encouraged unlawful acts

00:32by police personnel, and posed a threat to civil liberties.

00:37Yu said laws cited by the IGP do not in any way support his claim that no one can question

00:44the police's authority to check mobile phones at roadblocks.

00:49On Monday, Raza Rudin cited Section 3 Sub 3 of the Police Act, Section 23 Sub 1 of the

00:55Criminal Procedure Code, Section 249 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Section

01:03116B of the Criminal Procedure Code, Section 20 Sub G of the Police Act, and Section 292

01:10of the Penal Code to justify the police's right to check a person's mobile phone.

01:16However, Yu said none of the mentioned provisions grant the police the right to check the mobile

01:21phones of whomever they please at roadblocks or elsewhere.

01:26She also advised the public to be aware of their rights, saying they can refuse to comply

01:31with unlawful demands by police personnel.
