The Court of Appeal has affirmed the High Court's dismissal of a defamation suit brought
00:05
by Lim Guan Eng against MCA Vice President Tan Teck Cheng and the Star Media Group.
00:11
A three-member bench led by Justice Cee Mee Chun said there was no merit in Lim's appeal.
00:17
The court also ordered Lim to pay Tan and the Star Media Group 30,000 ringgit and 40,000
00:21
ringgit in costs, respectively.
00:24
Justice Ahmad Kamal Shahid said a reasonable man would assume that an explanation would
00:28
be forthcoming from Lim on the issue of funding for SJKC Kwek Hoyao and the change in the
00:33
school's name.
00:35
In June last year, the High Court dismissed Lim's suit, which concerned an opinion piece
00:39
that Tan wrote in the Star during the Johor state polls in 2022.
00:43
In the suit, Lim alleged that Tan had made a false claim, which questioned the former
00:47
finance minister's motives for allocating 4 million ringgit to SJKC Kwek Hoyao during
00:52
the state elections.
00:54
Tan also said he had been reliably informed that the school had, in return for the allocation,
00:58
agreed to incorporate the name of a housing development into its name.
01:02
The school is now known as SJKC Kwek Hoyao at EcoSpring, but retains its existing name
01:07
in Mandarin.
