How do Brummies celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Many of us will be treating a special someone in our lives for Valentine's Day. It means everything to some and nothing to others. I'm here today on the streets of Birmingham to find out from people what they like to do for the occasion.

00:03 it's somebody just remembering, you know,

00:05 about when you meet somebody and you keep that going,

00:09 the sparkle going, right?

00:10 I usually get a card and I receive a card, right?

00:14 And, um, it's nice.

00:16 It's nice, um, to think that...

00:19 ..that there's that kind of thing in the world.

00:22 You know, that's what I think, anyway, myself.

00:27 OK, my husband and I are rather romantic.

00:29 We do enjoy Valentine's Day.

00:31 We always bite through a card,

00:32 even though we know it's from each other.

00:34 We always go for lunch or dinner.

00:35 And usually I send my children a chocolate hearse

00:38 or something like that, just to acknowledge the fact that we love them.

00:41 Yeah, why not? Romance is great. Enjoy it.

00:43 Valentine's Day's a bit like Christmas, eh?

00:47 You know, it's a lovely time when people used to send

00:50 a bit of an anonymous card in the name of St Valentine, you know.

00:54 I don't know if you could still say St Valentine,

00:56 so you might offend some people.

00:58 Don't be offended.

00:59 But, no, it's a corruption.

01:01 It's a nice idea, but personally, if you love somebody,

01:05 you love them on every single day there is, man.

01:07 So you just need a specific day

01:10 to show your feelings towards somebody, you know?

01:13 I think you should just do it all the time.

01:15 And if you get a bit of a Valentine's card, it's a bonus, but...

01:18 ..you know, just show the love.

01:25 Valentine's Day, man.

01:28 I'm single and...

01:31 I know some...

01:34 It's kind of...

01:35 Often people say it's just another day, but it's...

01:39 I suppose it'd be great to be...

01:42 I don't know. I don't know.

01:44 I think it's a day of mourning for me.

01:47 No, no, but it's a day of, like, friends and, like...

01:51 Well, it's just another day, cos I don't have a relationship.

01:55 And I suppose I have sent cards to people who I have a crush on.

02:01 But, um, yeah, not in the past.

02:05 But cos I'm single, I don't know.

02:07 Um...

02:09 Well, whether or not you're lucky in love,

02:13 don't let it get you down too badly,

02:15 as it's still a great day to show care and appreciation

02:18 to the people around you.

02:19 If you are in the mood for romance, though,

02:21 there are a load of speed-dating events coming up

02:24 around this romantic time of year,

02:26 including at the Cocktail Club on the 27th

02:29 and the Box at Brindley Place on the 21st.

02:32 And what a better part of the city for romance

02:34 than beautiful Brindley Place.
