00:00 Describing yesterday's federal court decision as a "Black Friday" for Sharia law is
00:07 misleading and detrimental to the nation, Sisters in Islam said.
00:11 The human rights NGO called out past Secretary General Taqiuddin Hassan for using the term
00:16 in response to the Apex Court's ruling to invalidate 16 provisions in the Khalatan Sharia
00:21 Criminal Code 1 enactment 2019 on the grounds that they were unconstitutional.
00:27 It was also reported to have called it a "dark day in history" for Muslims in the country.
00:33 In a statement today, SIS said this type of comment, particularly from legal professionals,
00:38 propagates a narrative of religious exploitation for political gain.
00:43 It commended the federal court for its ruling as it highlights the need for state legislative
00:48 assemblies to adhere to the federal constitution.
00:52 The group said, "The 8-1 majority decision reaffirms the universal application of laws
00:57 ensuring equality for all Malaysians, irrespective of religious or ethnic background."
01:02 SIS added that Sharia law is not facing any threat and called for all parties to exercise
01:08 restraint and work towards fostering a spirit of national unity instead.
01:14 It said the ruling by the federal court marks a significant milestone in Malaysia's pursuit
01:18 of justice and equality, serving as a reminder on the importance of upholding constitutional
01:23 principles and respecting the rule of law.
