Wales headlines 18 January: Wales going independent a ‘viable option’

An independent report into the future of Wales has found that independence is a viable option. The report also says that there would be difficulties in the short and medium term, raising taxes for public services. It also says a federal UK, with less input from Westminster would also be an option.

Re-opening the railway line between Aberystwyth and Carmarthen would cost as much as 2 billion pounds according to Transport for Wales, but campaigners have questioned the figure as no tests have been done. The line was closed in the 1960s, and now means the 49 mile journey takes train passengers 7 hours via Birmingham.

Snow across much of North and West Wales has caused more than 40 schools to shut around the country. Snow showers and ice as far south as Saundersfoot have caused difficult driving conditions for roads all around the country, with more weather warnings set to continue until the end of the week.
