Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye of Jockstrap spoke to NME ahead of the Mercury Prize 2023, and revealed their dream collaborations and the ever-growing support they receive from their live audiences.

00:05 What's it mean for you to be here today?

00:07 Yeah, it's our first thing we've done like this.

00:22 Have you managed to catch up with anyone so far?

00:23 Have you met anyone while you've been here?

00:25 Only briefly, really.

00:28 Yeah, briefly.

00:29 We've had soundcheck.

00:30 We're a bit... I'm not good at talking to people, innit?

00:33 So I'm not good at going up.

00:35 But when it comes out in the music, you would never guess so.

00:39 I feel like your album is so beautiful.

00:41 How have you found the response to it?

00:43 Yeah, it's been a really good response over the past year.

00:46 I've been very lucky.

00:47 Got some... Had some great festivals.

00:50 People singing along.

00:51 - Couldn't ask for more. - Yeah.

00:53 How's the response been like live for you?

00:55 Do you see that people get into it maybe more than you expected?

00:57 How's the response specifically for the new songs?

01:01 Yeah, they got the memo.

01:02 They know what to do, which is just have a really good time.

01:06 Sing, dance, kiss, cry.

01:11 And how was it with the Blur audience as well?

01:14 Because I feel like they can be maybe a different crowd.

01:16 Did you feel like you were winning them over?

01:18 What was the response like? Was it different?

01:19 We won them over. Yeah.

01:22 They loved it.

01:23 They all got down and bowed at the end.

01:26 There was only like 100 people there,

01:27 but the 100 of them that were there...

01:29 We were playing quite early on in the day,

01:31 but it was still really good.

01:33 It's like being on a game.

01:34 It's a weird, crazy stadium, isn't it? Yeah.

01:39 So if you could tour or play shows with anyone next,

01:42 who's your bucket list?

01:43 Who would you love to play with?

01:44 You're going to say Dave?

01:48 Yeah, I've said Dave a few times.

02:04 Which albums have you been listening to from the shortlist?

02:13 I haven't listened to the whole album.

02:14 We're new to Lancome.

02:15 And they're amazing.

02:16 We're really impressed by them.

02:18 So we're dipping our toes in slowly.

02:22 It's quite unusual music, so taking our time.

02:30 and they've been living under a rock,

02:31 what is the one thing you would want them to take from it?

02:33 What's the one message that you want them to have from it?

02:35 Be yourself.

02:39 Be yourself, you're sexy.

02:48 I feel like it's been a little while since you guys formed.

02:50 It was in 2016, right?

02:52 Maybe.

02:53 It was '18.

02:53 Yeah, 2016, '17, yeah.

02:56 How would you say that your sound or your working together

02:59 has evolved or changed since then?

03:03 It's got a bit more collaborative, I think.

03:04 At the beginning, we were just being a bit blah, blah, blah.

03:08 But now we know each other a bit better.

03:13 Yeah.

03:15 More-- what's the opposite of tentative?

03:20 The other way.

03:21 Like passionate, yeah.

03:22 We're more confident with our choices.

03:26 And if you were to win tonight, what does celebration

03:29 look like for you?

03:30 How would you celebrate?

03:31 Well, we'd go and book a suite in a very--

03:35 Nice.

03:35 --flush hotel and have a party.

03:38 Yeah, that's--

03:40 With other people as well.

03:43 And then how does the future look for you?

03:45 Going forward, have you thought about plans for new music,

03:47 where you'd like to take your sound,

03:48 or are we just enjoying the moment for now?

03:50 We've got a new song coming out next week, actually.

03:52 So that's pretty new.

03:56 Yeah.
