The U.S. is reportedly supporting South Korea's candidate running for the top post at the World Trade Organization.
Politico reported Tuesday that the State Department has directed some of its local embassy officials to gauge whether their host country supports South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee.
The U.S. has reportedly directed them to gently back Yoo if they haven't yet made a commitment.
It added it's a clear sign the U.S. supports Yoo, but it doesn't necessarily mean it could determine the outcome.
The report said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer coordinated the issue with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
AFP reported this week that the EU is leaning towards the other candidate who comes from Nigeria.
