The Korean Wave is going beyond K-pop and the movies.
Snacks from South Korea, like ice cream and instant noodles, are making major inroads overseas as well, our Min Suk-hyen reports.
Korean ice cream is getting attention from young consumers abroad.
Some have even shared personal reviews on ice cream brands such as Melona and Summer Crush-Coffee.
According to data provided by the Korea Customs Service, outbound shipments of ice cream have also been on the rise … and last year, exports hit an all-time high of 54-point-2 million U.S. dollars.
This year, a new record high is expected … as exports in the first six months of 2020 are already up by 7-point-4 percent from the corresponding period of 2019.
Binggrae, one of the country's major confectionary firms, is seeing its best overseas sales figures since first entering the U.S. market through COSTCO in 2016.
"We were able to succeed in selling overseas because we could offer ice creams in various shapes and distinct flavors… and because we worked to build infrastructure and find distributors."
South Korean instant noodles are meeting similar success.
According to South Korean food maker Nongshim, overseas sales accounted for 32 percent of its total sales in the first half of this year.
A New York Times product review in June this year picked Shin Ramyun Black as the world’s tastiest instant noodles... and U.S. sales in the first half of 2020 rose by 35 percent from a year earlier to reach their highest amount ever.
"The taste and quality of Nongshim Ramyun, which sets it apart from other instant noodles, truly represents Korea, which is why it is appreciated by many people around the world."
Industry watchers expect Korean snacks to remain popular overseas through the second half of the year.
