North Korean leader Kim Jong-un expressed New Year's greetings to his people in a handwritten letter instead of the usual trademark address.
The regime's state-run media reported on Friday that through the letter he vowed to work hard to introduce a new era in which the ideals and desires of the people will come true.
It's the first time in twenty-six years that a North Korean leader has sent New Year Day's greetings to his people.
Observers note he could have skipped this year's address to distract from announcements to be made at the 8th ruling Workers' Party Congress in January.
The event will cover Kim's new five-year economic development plan and possibly a message to the incoming Biden administration.
