Beijing is set to vote on the new Hong Kong national security law it proposed at China's National People's Congress on Thursday, and it's almost certain that it will be passed by the highly choreographed parliament.
The new national security law will allow Beijing to implement measures that prevent and punish subversion, terrorism, separatism and foreign interference in Hong Kong.
If enacted, it will mark the first time that a Chinese law carrying criminal penalties has been introduced into Hong Kong's legal code, bypassing the territory's legislature and public consultation processes... and is likely to further strain Washington-Beijing relations.
