A two year old boy in South Korea died on Thursday after being hit by an SUV in a school zone.
The tragic event in the city of Jeonju is the first fatal traffic accident punishable under the Min-sik law, which took effect in March.
According to reports, the boy was killed as the SUV, driven by a 53 year old, made an illegal U-turn in a school zone.
Under the new law, the driver who hasn't been named could face three years to life behind bars for killing a child under 13 years old.
The new law is named after a child that was killed in a similar accident last September.
It strengthens punishments for people who kill a child in a road traffic accident while their vehicle is in a child protection zone.
