The South Korean military has made great achievements in crushing COVID-19.
As of today, the number of cases in the military is zero and all patients have recovered.
Seoul's defense chief acknowledged their efforts today.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
Seoul's Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo applauded three soldiers in particular for the innovative ways in which they helped fight COVID-19 in the military.
These include the development of smartphone apps, test kits and new diagnostic methods,... including the "sample pooling" method,... which was first used by the military and later adopted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control.
"The pooling method confirms test results more quickly by combining the collected samples. It's effective in diagnosing multiple people at the same time."
The number of cases in the military fell to zero as of Wednesday afternoon... when the last remaining confirmed patient recovered from treatment.
There had been 39 patients confirmed in the military in total,... the first one on February 21st.
In a statement, Seoul's defense ministry attributed this achievement to its range of response and preventative measures... including a ban on soldiers going off base, taking leave and having on-base visitors implemented from mid-February.
It also noted that allowing the use of smartphones by service members... helped alleviate the stress of not being able to meet friends and family.
From this Friday, though, service members will be able to leave base.
Meanwhile, the South Korean Navy is participating in the hashtag 'thank_you challenge'... a nationwide campaign to express gratitude to medical staff for their efforts in Korea's fight against COVID-19.
It's doing that in its own unique way: all Navy ships are hoisting the 'thank you' flag on their halyards,... which navies do to communicate with or send signals to other forces.
