Italian daily La Repubblica, citing an unidentified diplomatic source, reported Friday that Jo Song-gil, who was until recently,... North Korea's acting ambassador to Italy, is seeking asylum in the U.S., and is under the protection of Italian intelligence.
The paper added that the 44-year-old had sought assistance from the Italian government in mid-November, and that Italian authorities have been communicating with the U.S.
As Jo's assignment came to an end in late November, he allegedly went into hiding with his wife earlier that month,... with his current whereabouts still unknown.
