Levin 5000mAh Solstar Solar Panel Charger Review

The Solstar solar panel charger is really two devices in one. It's a portable battery charger that can be used conventionally as a battery charger for mobile devices, recharging it from an AC or vehicle charger. But it can also be recharged by solar energy, which makes it ideal for times when an electrical power source is not available, such as for hiking or camping, or during emergencies when the power is out. The unit has two 5V~2.1A outlet ports for recharging small mobile devices. These ports as well as the device's own recharging port are covered with silicone flaps that make the charger water resistant. Accessories include a carabiner clip, a short charging cable, and three interchangeable charging plugs - micro-USB, Lightning plug for newer Apple products, and the older-style plug for Apple.

I tested the charger by recharging my Android phone and a 7" tablet. Both the phone and the tablet recharged at a respectable rate as they drew a total charging current of approximately 1.8 Amps.

Testing the solar panel's capability was not as straightforward as testing the battery, since the output could not be measured directly. But after drawing down the charger's capacity by recharging my phone and tablet, I placed the charger outside for about three hours, and one of the unlit LED charge indicators came on, which showed that the solar panel was recharging the unit's battery, although more slowly than from an AC power source.

Overall, I was pleased with the unit's performance both as a conventional portable battery and as a solar power charger.
