10:54Tapio's life raft PLB and that most likely means that he is in the life raft and that he has abandoned the vessel, that he is off Asteria.
11:04So we just got booted out of our apartment because we're flying tonight but we just had an EPIRB alert from Asteria, from Tapio.
11:14He's about 450 miles from Port Elizabeth off the bottom of South Africa and now we've got everything happening in the office
11:22and Seb, Jane, they've got things happening, doing updates for next to kin and communicating with the Rescue Coordination Centre in South Africa here
11:32and we're having to move now to the Yacht Club and we'll set up an office there and manage it.
11:37So the situation is all we know right now is that the EPIRB has gone off and we've upgraded his tracker but the tracker is now not working
11:46so we don't know any more than that. The conditions are really good, the weather is good, you know, so it's very strange, very strange.
11:54Anyway, we'll see what happens.
11:56If he was able to call us, he would have already. He hasn't called us on the sat phone, which means he's either in real trouble or it's a false alarm.
12:04The fact that the tracker's gone down is concerning because it's unusual, so we're only dealing with facts now
12:12but if he was in trouble and he had a chance, he'd call us on the phone.
12:16Activating the second YB3 because that's in the grab bag as well.
12:20Hopefully he grabbed the grab bag if he's in the life raft and we're activating that just in case so he can transmit a message.
12:26We've had no communication with Tapio at all. And as I say, it's a very benign weather.
12:32But maybe there was a ship around. We don't know. We don't know what's going on yet. It only happened minutes ago.
12:38So anyway, it's all very confusing right now.
12:46I got a text message on the YB3 and it was quite short and clear that Tapio's EPIRB is activated, I believe.
12:54That's what it said. And he was asking me to divert. So I quickly called him, asked for his position, took permission to...
13:02He said, you know, I think I was talking to Sebastian. He said that you can open your GPS.
13:07I asked if I can open my phone because with my phone I can even get an AIS contact on the screen.
13:13So he said, yes, go ahead, do what you want to do. Opened my phone and plotted his position and then I was heading towards him.
13:20The weather forecast for Tapio's position at the moment is very light winds to zero wind over the next four or five hours.
13:28For you, it will increase to about 25 knots over the next four hours from west-southwest.
13:39Ok, so till tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock I will have 25 knots west-southwest.
13:43It will slowly abate, yes, but it will be 25 and then it will go down to 20 knots about due south.
13:51You have a low pressure, you have a low pressure that is moving east. So at the beginning it's going to be more west and that the low pressure is moving, you will have more south.
14:01Ok, copy, copy, no problem. And is there any ship close to Tapio's location from, what do you call it, marine traffic or something?
14:10Yeah, so at the moment Kirsten is 100 miles away, you are 170 miles away and the next commercial vessel is 270 miles away.
14:19So we are in contact with the MRCC that they are contacting that commercial vessel to increase speed and hopefully they could be there in 13 to 14 hours.
14:29OK, so then the second YB-3, you have activated that?
14:38Yeah, I will have a look.
14:40Yeah, we need to activate the second YB-3.
14:44The big thing we are holding out for is Kirsten, she is actually a lot closer and she would actually get there before the ship if we can get to her at the moment, we are still unable to.
14:52The process is that we send a message, an emergency message on the YB-3 unit in the boat, sets off an alarm and she gets that and calls us back with a sat phone.
15:03But for some reason we haven't been able to do that yet.
15:06Yeah, beyond that we are now waiting. We know that Tapio has acknowledged the fact that the YB-3 now is operational and we are fully expecting to get a message from him soon.
15:17If he doesn't have his glasses, it might be a problem, it's hard to get things happening, but he knows how to use that unit really well.
15:23He used it every day during the GGR in 2018.
15:26Yeah, distress received, message details, if possible.
15:36A bit concerning when we thought, oh, it's the PLB in the raft, because that only lasts for 24 to 36 hours to give a position.
15:46And if you lose a position in a life raft, if you don't know where they are, it's very demanding.
15:50But now with the YB-3, that'll last for a month or more.
15:53So we're excited the fact that he's got this device and can text us messages and we can communicate back and forwards.
16:00And it gives another position source as well, which we've now got set at 15 minutes.
16:05And once we start talking, we can back off a bit to save the battery.
16:08But anyway, we will have to wait and see.
16:10We're still completely in the dark.
16:12It's very unusual.
16:13It's not a storm, not heavy weather, but something catastrophic has happened on the boat.
16:17So that's really about it now.
16:19No, no, it is not transmitting.
16:28It stopped transmitting at the last thing at four UTC this morning and the position hasn't been updated.
16:37So we, we think that it's still on the boat and the boat has gone down.
16:42Hearing about Tapio sinking was, yeah, that was, that was a massive shock because obviously we didn't, none of us knew what truly had happened other than he was safely in a life raft.
16:53And, and, and, um, at the time Abelesh was on route to, uh, to rescue him because we were on the HF talking, you know, sharing information.
17:02So yeah, Tapio sinking was a massive shock and anyone getting into a life raft is just no small thing.
17:08Okay.
17:09With your current speed, you may reach the location by eight o'clock tomorrow evening.
17:13Copy that.
17:14I would not be surprised if every single entrance still in the race at that point was checking the stern of their boat and the hoses and the stern.
17:22You know, any, any through all fittings, et cetera, to make sure everything was, uh, was still in place and where it should be.
17:29When it sank, I actually moved my, my life raft in the boat to a better spot because I had it in the boat as I have a catch rig.
17:37I hadn't had it on deck and I had it in below the forward hatch and I figured that it's kind of hard to get it out in the seaway.
17:45So I had it done close to the companionway in the back of the boat.
17:49It was, it was more like, uh, getting a new idea about safety and board for me.
17:56In the end, it turned out to be perfect conditions for that, for that to happen.
18:00And if there is such a thing, uh, so it was, uh, it all went well, but it apps, I think for everybody, it made us all think about how vulnerable we are.
18:09You know, it's only a few millimeters of, uh, fiberglass between you and the, uh, and the ocean.
18:16So it's, uh, 12.30 local time and 11.30 UTC.
18:21And, uh, we have received, uh, messages from Tapio, which is very good.
18:26Um, uh, where he says that Asteria, he confirmed that Asteria sunk.
18:31Um, he said that, uh, he gave a last salute to the boat while watching it sinking.
18:36Um, he's mentioned that the boat sank from, um, from the back to the bow, from the stern to the bow within five minutes.
18:45He just woke up, noted it, got into a survivor suit, the boat sank, he got into the life raft.
18:50And, uh, he has his YB-3 and, uh, he should have an emergency sat phone as well.
18:57Um, he has not called or has not, uh, turned on yet. We tried to call it.
19:02Um, but that's, uh, good news. Um, he is alive and, uh, he is in his life raft.
19:09Abilesh also called and he confirmed that he will be on scene by tomorrow evening.
19:13Uh, we still have not been able to make contact to Kirsten.
19:17I lost my boat in 2018. It caused a lot of problems.
19:20And I soon started having dreams of boats sinking. It wasn't mine.
19:25Uh, so I dreamt of a boat ahead of me getting, uh, you know, in a storm dismastered or something.
19:30Another behind me sinking. And I believe my dreams are prophetic. Uh, they always are.
19:37All right. Okay. Thanks, Sip. I'm, uh, I'm, uh, altering course right away.
19:52Perfect. Thank you, Kirsten.
19:55Okay. It's, uh, early morning. Sun has just risen.
20:01And we're on our way to see if we can find Tapio.
20:04We're about 18 nautical miles away.
20:07So hopefully we'll get to him real soon now.
20:10So it was pretty abrupt stop to the, to the race, race. And, uh, and again, a huge disappointment.
20:19The boat had, uh, six or actually seven watertight bulkheads.
20:25And, and, uh, it had been very thoroughly rebuilt and, and reinforced.
20:31Asturio was one of the best prepared boats. In fact, I would say that, uh, uh, he kind of ripped the entire boat apart and rebuilt it for 2018.
20:39I had been bragging that, that the boat was as unsinkable as Titanic.
20:44And, and, and so, uh, it's just, it was a bitter thing to accept that, that, that, that, that was the end of my second race.
20:55He has two albatrosses kissing on the life raft.
20:59Oh, nice, uh, okay, that's good.
21:03So he's, now he's in very good spirits. Uh, he's, uh, obviously a bit shocked to have lost the boat, uh, but he's warm.
21:10He has all the comms materials and we are doing four hour updates, uh, with him.
21:16I'm happy to send you updates every four hours, uh, either on the YB or on the sat phone, as you prefer.
21:23Tapio is safe in the life raft.
21:26He has Kirsten coming from his, uh, southwest and the bulk carrier coming from the northwest.
21:34They are both expected around the same time tomorrow morning.
21:38Um, and they will, um, liaise together to see what is the best way to get, uh, Tapio out of the life raft and on the boat.
21:49Uh, we privileged Tapio going on the carrier,
21:53so that Kirsten could continue her race, uh, solo.
21:58Uh, but it will depend on the sea state.
22:01Uh, it will depend on the, uh, material available on the boat.
22:05Uh, on the boat and on the decisions of the MRCC.
22:10I'm a big admirer of, of Kirsten and, uh, a big fan of hers.
22:15And, uh, we had already become friends before the start of the race, and I was super happy to be rescued by her.
22:36And it was fantastic seeing her, uh, in the horizon.
22:40And, uh, she maneuvered many, uh, very professional way next to the raft.
22:48So, uh, I was up in the cockpit, uh, at the first try.
22:54There we go.
22:55Okay.
22:56There's the ship.
22:57There's the ship coming now.
22:58We're waiting for the ship to make a lee on their port side.
23:02And, uh, then they're going to throw us a line with a float.
23:06We're going to approach.
23:07We're going to tie the line on board.
23:10Tapio is going to board the life raft.
23:12They're going to drag him in and happy days.
23:16And then he's probably, um, going to China or something like that.
23:21And, and it was a great moment to share the last of round with her.
23:27And waiting, waiting for the bulk carrier, Dario Gayatri to, uh, to, uh, come to the sea.
23:35Okay.
23:36There's Tapio.
23:37He's boarding the ladder now.
23:39I'm, uh, I'm just, uh, lying a hole here till I know he's, um, well and truly safe.
23:52I was reassured going to Tapio by little bits of information that had been relayed.
23:59Like Tapio saluted his boat, Asteria, as she went down.
24:02And I thought, well, that's pretty clear-minded thinking.
24:04And that's, um, quite a positive thing to hear in a circumstance like that.
24:08So I wasn't worried about his safety, but I didn't like the thoughts of someone being
24:12on a life raft on the Southern Indian Ocean.
24:15And I just really wanted to get to him very quickly.
24:17But I'll take out of that a huge life lesson.
24:20And that is in positivity because when I got to Tapio, he was laughing.
24:23He was joking.
24:24He was making jokes about scratching barnacles of the boat and all sorts of things.
24:28And if I ever get into a bad situation or I'm feeling really down because I would have
24:32been gutted if I had watched my boat sink and beneath my feet, um, I'd like to remember
24:36what a good positive attitude Tapio had.
24:39There he climbs the ladder.
24:43And then once he's aboard, they're going to pull the life raft aboard as well.
24:53I didn't hear the extent of how he must have felt in the moment that it happened.
24:58I didn't hear that, how upset he was and, um, you know, worried and concerned.
25:03And I'm sure Tapio went through those moments.
25:05But by the time I got to Tapio, uh, or maybe he's just an incredibly positive person, maybe,
25:10you know, uh, but he was very, very positive.
25:13Ah, that went, uh, pretty smoothly.
25:16The ship, uh, told me they'd make a lee in their port side, which is exactly what they
25:21did.
25:22And then I got as close as I could.
25:24That was a bit scary because there's still quite a bit of swell.
25:26And here on your rig, hitting the side, they threw a line on board.
25:31Uh, Tapio caught the line.
25:34He tied the line onto the raft.
25:36He boarded the raft.
25:37I cut the raft loose on my end.
25:39They pulled it in.
25:40He climbed up.
25:41He's now on deck.
25:42And, uh, they are manually lifting the raft onto the ship.
25:49I mean, he's on board.
25:51That's all that matters now.
25:56He said, we should, um, start a tourist business offering people a night aboard a life raft
26:02in the Southern Indian Ocean.
26:04He says it'll be a killer.
26:08What a guy.
26:09After everything he's just lived through, he was full of jokes and smiles and...
26:17Man, that's a good guy.
26:20Kirsten!
26:21He is on board the ship.
26:23Yes.
26:24He was with me on the boat.
26:26And then I approached the ship and they pulled him in on his life raft afterwards.
26:30And he is now safe aboard the vessel.
26:33He is on the vessel.
26:34Fantastic.
26:35He is on the vessel.
26:36Fantastic.
26:37Yes.
26:38The Garcia Maritime on route for China.
26:42China.
26:43It's a great example of the way how Don has, Don McIntyre has organized the race and the redundancy of all the safety systems.
26:59And his professionalism in coordinating a rescue operation that I can honestly say that I was never afraid during the whole incident and the 25 hours spent on the raft.
27:17I'm just glad I could help him.
27:20I'm full of adrenaline right now because it's quite something.
27:24You'd like to access your ship on an early sea.
27:27But we're all good.
27:28We're all good.
27:29He was on board.
27:30We're trying to run together and then we sent him on his merry way.
27:37Wonderful.
27:38Well, thank you so much.
27:40There has been a lot of people all around the world.
27:43There is very little sleep following you flying to Tapio's rescue.
27:49So, still lots of questions, but if you can't work out why it happened, then I don't think anyone ever will be able to.
28:02I can't repeat my thanks many enough times.
28:09Yeah.
28:10I understand how thankful I am.
28:12Yeah, yeah.
28:13All good stuff, Tapio.
28:15It's great to talk to you.
28:16I'm looking forward to give you the first hug, eh?
28:19It's the most amazing situation because it was a beautifully prepared boat in fantastic condition and this happened.
28:26So, it's very confusing.
28:27But we're happy to have Tapio back and I look forward to giving him a big hug.
28:33I feel really, really sorry for Tapio.
28:37The only thing that stops me feeling sorry for him is the fact that he didn't show one hint of self-pity.
28:47He was so, so positive and I really, really admire that about him.
28:51He was all jokes and laughs, even though you could tell he'd just been through something really, really traumatic.
28:59I myself can't imagine what it's like to have catastrophic, spontaneous, instant flooding that you can do absolutely nothing about.
29:08That you can't stem, you can't stop, you can't fix it.
29:11And I put it down to his being a very level-headed person and an extremely good and experienced seafarer that he was able to get his life raft deployed in time and get himself with his survival suits and his grab bags off that boat before she went down.
29:29And then, if I understand things correctly, I think Tapio really loved and respected his boat.
29:39It wasn't just a boat, it was his boat with her own personality and I'm sure he's pretty sad that she's now down below there.
29:51I'm really gutted for him as well.
29:54But I really, really admire him and the way he took the whole situation, the amount of positivity he showed.
30:01He's a real trooper, he just soldiered on.
30:03And heaven forbid, but if I ever had to land up in a life raft with someone else, then he'd be the person I'd want to be in a life raft with.
30:17Because you can tell, he knows how to keep his calm and he's positive and there's no replacement for positivity in this life.
30:27So, yeah, now he's on the ship on his way to China and I hope that he'll relax.
30:37I chatted to the captain on the VHF a little bit as they were passing me and they've got a 32-day trip to China and the captain sounded really nice.
30:46cruise from India and they said they were going to ask Tapio to teach them a bit of celestial navigation.
30:54And they said they were all very curious to know about yachting and this race and traditional navigation.
31:03So I hope he's going to have a really good and memorable trip and it will add to his repertoire of incredible stories.
31:12And I'm really, really, really glad that he's safe and I'm glad that I was in a position to help.
31:42I'm glad that he's safe and I'm glad that he's safe and I'm glad that I'm not.
31:52I'm glad that I'm not.
31:54So I'm glad a little bit of a challenge.
31:56You're not.
32:00Like I'm glad you're in a position to help me with my heart.
32:07And I'm glad that he's safe and we're on the team.
