UN Official urges Security Council to restore trust in peace operations

A senior United Nations official has called on the Security Council to back peace operations as essential tools of diplomacy, warning that a growing “trust deficit” is hampering conflict resolution efforts across the globe.

00:08Martha Amar-Akiyafobi, UN Assistant Secretary General for Africa,
00:13addressed the Council on behalf of the Under-Secretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs,
00:19highlighting a growing trust deficit.
00:22She says it's undermining peace efforts.
00:24The trust deficit we see today did not exist with many of our more successful missions in the past.
00:32This rich history must be re-explored in mind.
00:36To be successful, our political missions must be responsive to the needs of their host state or states
00:43and conversely enjoy the support of their host state or states.
00:48The responsibility for achieving political solutions rests with national actors.
00:56UN Chief Antonio Guterres says a full review of peace operations is underway.
01:01It was called for by member states in the Pact for the Future, adopted last September.
