00:00The United Nations Chief warned on Thursday of a high number of armed conflicts in the world
00:06as he marked the Responsibility to Protect anniversary.
00:10The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres further called on members' tests
00:13to remain committed to the Responsibility to Protect against violence.
00:17The Responsibility to Protect was adopted by the UN in 2005.
00:22Today we mark the 20th anniversary of the Responsibility to Protect
00:26at a time of profound global turbulence.
00:30We are witnessing the highest number of armed conflicts since the end of the Second World War.
00:36And these are marked by rising identity-based violence,
00:41widespread violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law,
00:47and deepening impunity.
00:49On this anniversary, we must recognize that the Responsibility to Protect is more than a principle.
00:54It's a moral imperative rooted in our shared humanity and UN Charter.
