Highlighting that the challenges the world is confronted with cannot be dealt with through outdated systems and governing structures, India on August 23, said that the most urgent need of the hour is to make the United Nations Security Council more representative of developing countries to reflect current geopolitical realities.

At a UNSC briefing on "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Promote Common Security Through Dialogue and Cooperation", India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj While speaking at UNSC India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj said, “UN was established in 1945 with noble objective of saving succeeding generations from scourge of war. As the most universal & representative international organization, UN has been credited with keeping peace over last 77 years. Any coercive or unilateral action that seeks to change status quo by force is affront to common security.

Common security is only possible when countries respect each-others sovereignty & territorial integrity, as they would expect their own sovereignty to be respected.”

“Today’s meeting is an opportune moment to engage in a serious discussion about India’s call for reformed multilateralism, at the core of which lies the reform of the UN Security Council. As my PM said at UNGA in 2020, “Reform in responses, in processes, in the character of the UN is the need of the hour.” How can we aspire for common security, when the common good of the global south is continued to be denied representation in its decision making.
