00:00all right welcome back to newswire pga tour of course coming to the end of the line here and
00:04let's get to the very latest fedex cup standings on the line as well speaking of which keith
00:08stewart is here with us to preview the windham championship keith thanks for coming on the show
00:11uh really appreciate it and look you know once the majors end keith you know some people you know
00:17their pga interest deviates a little bit we got football starting and baseball heating up but i
00:22know this is a critical week on the tour oh absolutely um you know the pga tour has we've
00:28been critical of them in many ways and the way they've built this schedule but the last couple
00:32of weeks between the 3m up in minnesota and now down at the windham championship that we're going to see
00:36the final event of the regular season these guys are really concerned about these playoff points
00:41and it's pushed some of these players with some big names like a guy like adam scott to have to be here
00:46this week and um it definitely adds some engagement to the event at the windham and you know what there
00:52was a lot of times where a lot of people weren't watching the windham looking for the top 125 cut
00:56off and the playoffs were all kind of set and everything but now it actually means something
01:00and uh you know kudos to the pga tour for creating something that entertains us yeah definitely so and
01:06and even though the big names are not participating most of them in this tournament this week at the
01:12windham as you mentioned a lot on the line but in a tournament like this anything goes and as you
01:17can see keith the odds are telling us that could be the case you got a player potentially trying to
01:24defend his championship who's one of the favorites at 25 to 1 and aaron gray we got fitzpatrick who
01:29of course has had a nice year ben griffin who's had a fantastic year keegan bradley robert mcintyre
01:35and others involved in this but naturally none of the very big names participating so what do you
01:41make of the field and then we'll get to the course well so much of this has to do with the storylines
01:47that are very current in the pop culture of golf right now first and foremost the top 70 get into
01:52the playoffs so anybody that's you know higher than 65 and you know and beyond and right there
01:58in the early 70s i mean these guys they have to make the cut on friday and then they have to play
02:03well through the weekend you know there's there's a lot of drama to play out there then there's the
02:07rider cup consideration look at a lot of the guys that are on the top of that list keegan bradley
02:11ben griffin matt fitzpatrick all these guys need great weeks we've seen what chris gotterup's been up
02:16to over the last couple weeks trying to stake his claim they're getting themselves prepared
02:20for the playoffs and beyond but they these guys need to make runs in order to solidify those
02:25positions for beth page so that just adds another layer to this onion you know what i mean and when
02:30the whole thing unfolds this weekend down in windham we're gonna have soft conditions it's gonna be very
02:35very easy to score for these guys the average winning score there over the last decade is about
02:3920 under par vegas set the over under number for the final score at 20 and a half we expect birdies
02:45we expect wall to wall bermuda grass and the guys that are good in the southeast are going to stand
02:51out craig yeah i think that's really the key there with that now as far as uh the fedex cup scotty
02:57scheffler is the current favorite that should be no surprise uh with his odds at plus 215 i'll just run
03:02them down for you real quick rory is plus 550 fleetwood 14 to 1 xander 15 to 1 as well but we've seen this
03:09thing go sideways in the past i mean i i don't you know look sideways and scotty scheffler are not two
03:15words that we should probably ever put together but you know anything can happen down the stretch
03:20craig i think it's really important to note that the pga tour has abandoned the starting strokes for
03:26the tour championship so if you're one of those top 70 guys that gets in and gets hot and we've seen
03:31this year after year and you're kind of alluding to it there the guys win multiple playoff events and
03:35go on a run and win this fedex cup whoever gets in to the tour championship at east lake those top 30
03:41guys if you win that week you win the fedex cup you get all the cash you get all the accolades you get
03:47everything you need right so like yes scotty is the prohibited favorite but this thing is a lot more
03:53wide open than it has been in the past couple of years when we've had those starting strokes and i think
03:58we have three really interesting ball striking venues i mean the first one we're very familiar with tpc
04:03south wind there in memphis where they have the saint jude but then the next week the bmw loves to
04:08rotate last year we were in denver this year we're in maryland at caves valley that's that famous cantlay
04:12de chambeau about 10 years ago playoff that was absolutely spectacular and then of course we go
04:18back to atlanta and the redone east lake i mean there's a lot to play for i i would be very hard
04:25pressed to bet anything about the end of the fedex cup going in right now yeah no i i think so and and by
04:31the way when you look back before we you know i want to have a little fun with you here at the end
04:34but before we do that when you look back at all of the majors this season and i know we still have
04:39some time to go here does it feel like scotty sheffler was the dominant story of the season i mean
04:46jj spawn shot to me he you know will live forever there were some really great moments on the tour this
04:51year but was it simply scotty winning as much as he did is that really the story at the end
04:56well we all have a recency bias what rory mcelroy did at augusta was career changing it was life
05:03changing we saw his emotional outpouring on the 18th green let's not forget that storyline but
05:08scotty's going to be the player of the year he's got two majors he's got a bunch of wins he's probably
05:13going to win again he's probably well you just said he's the favorite to win the fedex cup so at this
05:18point scotty and i've said this a couple times on the grid where scotty's at that point now where he's
05:24getting past rory and brooks as like the best of his generation he's moving towards that fill
05:28status of like can i get to like 40 50 wins can i get to like six or seven majors and uh i think we're
05:35all excited to see what he can do from here but uh it's tough to say he's not the story of the year
05:40for 2025 yeah and definitely a little self-deprecating too as we saw in uh happy gilmore 2 keith i mean
05:48i mean that was you know and ending the movie basically coming back i don't want to ruin the
05:53movie here i actually just did here a little bit but uh spoiler alert for anyone that hasn't seen
05:58happy gilmore 2 keith and i are going to talk about it here a little bit uh i thought it was
06:02extremely well done i thought it was fun uh my son who really just doesn't love movies was locked in
06:08and watching because he does love golf and i and there's people critical of this movie i'm not sure
06:13how i thought it was exactly what i wanted to see going in and i thought it was really fun in the end
06:18craig you and i are in lockstep then on this i mean there's there's three things that really stuck
06:24out to me number one is that the players had personality i mean i'm out there on the tour
06:2820 plus weeks a year 24 weeks a year and i see these guys in the press room and they don't really
06:33have a lot to say that's all that engaging and i get that they're under the microscope but in this
06:37movie they really put themselves out there and i think a lot of that had to do with the fact that
06:41adam sandler we're really leading the charge getting you know some of these superstars and the cameos
06:46that are in this i won't give any of them away but man they're absolutely spectacular that scene at
06:50the tour championship dinner is unbelievable and then you know of course you know them mocking the
06:56current state of golf to me really just showed why it wasn't really a sequel it just stands out as
07:03something that was a great piece of pop culture i couldn't recommend to people especially if they love
07:07golf to go see it yeah and scotty scheffler fans will enjoy too keith thanks again for coming on
07:12newswire really appreciate it craig anytime i always love to talk golf you know that
