00:00Now we take a look at Major League Baseball.
00:01We had the big Otani scandal here, Joe Ranieri, but this one's certainly not as big,
00:05but we see players getting caught up in this all the time.
00:08And Jeff Passan tweeted out breaking news yesterday.
00:10The Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Classe has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave
00:15as part of Major League Baseball's sports betting investigation.
00:18Sources tell ESPN.
00:19Classe is the second Guardians pitcher on leave tied to the investigation,
00:23joining right-handed Luis Ortiz.
00:25So let me ask you this question.
00:26Like, basketball, football, a little bit easier to determine.
00:31But are we just looking at, like, ooh, Classe's a really good closer?
00:34What happened tonight when he couldn't get anybody out?
00:36And were there betting irregularities based on the losing of the game or a total?
00:42Like, it's so much different for a pitcher than it is, per se, for a NBA guard that can say,
00:47I'm not hitting any threes, and I'm just going to try to actually fake an injury
00:51and leave the game to catch all these unders, Joe.
00:53How do we find out what he's doing, and what do you think he was doing?
00:56I have – the whole thing, I wish they would be a little bit more transparent,
01:01Major League Baseball, in what's going on, because this Ortiz thing is going on, what,
01:06two months now?
01:07Donnie, it feels like a month and a half.
01:09And we – the only thing that we know is that the irregularities had to do with,
01:14you know, micro-betting.
01:16In other words, guys that are betting whether the next pitch is a strike or a ball.
01:20And exactly what is the limit on those kinds of bets, Donnie?
01:25Because, I mean, how can anything stand out if you can only bet $200 or $500?
01:31So I don't understand exactly unless this is, you know, somebody got busted and, you know,
01:38dropped a name here or there.
01:39But I don't know how you proved any of that or how any red flag comes about
01:45if the limit is $200, $300, $400, $500.
01:49Like, I just don't understand the – what would have made the flagging for that to begin with.
01:54Or just, like, a guy just being dumb.
01:57Hey, I'm going to sign up under the name Emmanuel Classe,
01:59and I'm going to bet $1,000 tonight on Cleveland Guardians games that we're going to win,
02:03we're going to lose.
02:03That's different.
02:04Somebody's going to get base hit.
02:05Like, that's what we're talking about.
02:06Because the one thing is we don't know, right?
02:08Like, we see the Jeff Passant tweet.
02:10It doesn't explain it.
02:11And the things that always get me mad, like so-and-so suspension for a violation of the, you know, drug code.
02:17But they never released the code.
02:19Like, tell me, was it cocaine?
02:20Was it marijuana?
02:21Was it testosterone?
02:22Like, wind straw?
02:22Like, what were we actually doing?
02:24So this leaves a lot of vagueness.
02:26If that breaking tweet yesterday from Jeff Passant came across your screen,
02:29Emmanuel Classe has been determined that he had betting on games or an account linked to it.
02:33Like, okay, that makes sense.
02:34But again, as we talk about a three-point shooter, a quarterback, a running back, or like a hitter himself,
02:41there's not too many bets you can make on Emmanuel Classe in a baseball game.
02:44There's no, like, two blow-away save in this game, two give-up-and-earned run.
02:48Like, there's none of that as opposed to watch me get in this game and throw meatballs right down the middle
02:54because I know we'll be up two runs and we'll make sure we lose by one.
02:57It's almost impossible to thread that needle.
02:59You can throw an 80-mile-an-hour fastball down the middle.
03:01It doesn't mean that player's going to hit it and drive in runs.
03:05It doesn't mean that Classe is going to pitch.
03:08Like, you're talking about a guy that you just, you don't know if he's going to be involved in the game or what.
03:15None of it, I mean, none of it makes any sense because those kinds of wagers are always limited in scope
03:22as far as how much money you can lay down.
03:24Nobody is running to the window to drop 50 large there, Donnie, to go, you know what?
03:29I bet Classe gives up a hit.
03:31And then you still need two people.
03:33He can throw it over a meatball over.
03:35It doesn't mean it's going to happen.
03:37So that's why, I mean, they need to do a better job of being a little bit more transparent here.
03:42What's going on with Ortiz?
03:44And how is Classe now involved in this if it doesn't involve Ortiz and Ortiz, like, yeah, you know,
03:52because it seems like Ortiz just rolled over on Classe, doesn't it?
03:55That's the timing of all of this.
03:57Is that what they want?
03:58Save me, save you.
04:00Hey, he's on this too.
04:01Or just like a random account that just popped up and had one wager, like Classe or the, you know,
04:06Moneyline going against the Guardians that was bet live in the ninth inning and Classe got blown away.
04:11Like, hey, let's do this.
04:12Maybe it is true, maybe it's not.
04:14But you've got to be kidding me.
04:15Like, these Major League Baseball players making millions of dollars a year,
04:18worried about hundreds of dollars that they're trying to pick up on the side.
04:21It's a tough time at that point right now.
04:23Now, in Major League Baseball, again, betting scandals are going to happen.
04:26They're going to get flagged.
04:26That's why we have legalized sports gambling.
04:28But sometimes we don't hear about the other, you know, implications of finances,
04:32where I guess Rob Manfred is almost doing that tour of around Major League Baseball,
04:36like the state of the game.
04:37Let me update the players.
04:38And when he got to Philadelphia and started talking about,
04:41hey, man, looks like maybe salary cap the owners are trying to push for here.
04:45Bryce Harper said from Jeff Passant's tweet,
04:47stood nose to nose with the Major League Baseball commissioner during a meeting last week
04:51and told him to get the blank out of our clubhouse if he wanted to talk about a salary cap,
04:57sources told ESPN.
04:59So Bryce Harper, a $300 million man, is like, kick rocks, buddy.
05:03Trying to make even more money now.
05:05Well, it's so funny because, again, this is something that happens every year.
05:11Manfred always meets annually with every Major League Baseball team leading up to this
05:16to try to, A, improve their relationship with the players, the front office.
05:22And, of course, you know, the owners pay Rob Manfred.
05:26It's the same thing with Roger Goodell.
05:27Like, the owners pay those guys millions upon millions of dollars to try and keep the peace
05:33as best as possible.
05:35And you have more and more owners now in Major League Baseball that keep pushing this
05:40salary cap envelope.
05:42So the players are like, every time they've done it, last time we had a lockout was, what,
05:4794, 95?
05:49But it appears guys like Harper are like, don't do it because we'll sit out.
05:53We got no problem losing 162 games.
05:56We have no problem doing that.
05:58Specifically the guys at the high end.
06:00And the reason why, why is baseball such a strong union?
06:03Because the NFL guys realize they got like two years to make their money.
06:05Hey, I'm not going to sit out an entire year so the next guy can make more money.
06:09And I didn't make it.
06:10And guys like Bryce Harper don't want a salary cap because they make $300 million on their
06:14contract here.
06:15But there is something in Major League Baseball, like a fine-toothed comb that can help everybody.
06:19If you're looking at it as a union, protect the highest guys and the lowest guys.
06:22The salary cap floor is something they absolutely have to look at because that means everybody
06:26on the bottom shelf makes more money.
06:28And you're kidding me, Bryce Harper, you're still going to make your $300 million at the top
06:31end of that spectrum here.
06:32But let's hear from the public here.
06:35Ah, yeah.
06:43Fading the public today.
06:44What question could we answer?
06:45We always like to keep it as a hot topic in the sports landscape here.
06:48At Sports Grid, we asked, should there be a salary cap in Major League Baseball?
06:52There's only two answers.
06:53It was yes and it was a no.
06:55And I'm not surprised by this vote because I told you to open the show, Joe.
06:59Me as a Phillies fan, don't technically want a salary cap because my team spends money.
07:04Yankee fans don't want that.
07:06Dodgers fans don't want that.
07:07If your team spends money, you want that cap to be as high as possible because you'll get
07:10more players and better players than anybody who doesn't want to spend money.
07:14But for the good of the sport, I do think there needs to be some salary cap restraints.
07:18So I voted yes, along with 62.6% of the people out here.
07:23The no's right around 37%.
07:25Looking at the Major League Baseball salary cap and if it is getting imposed, the public
07:30says yes, Joe.
07:31What do you say?
07:33Listen, there is no doubt that there is a issue with the way Major League Baseball is structured.
07:39The money keeps, the revenue that it keeps generating, Donnie, continues to go up.
07:45Again, I mean, over $12 billion.
07:48And how much of that $12 billion do you think the Royals or the Pittsburgh Pirates in that
07:54market actually contributed to?
07:56No, it was a handful of teams that are responsible for a majority of that money.
08:01And guess what, though?
08:02What is the motivation of buying Pittsburgh or Miami or Kansas or these smaller market
08:07teams, Donnie?
08:08What is my motivation to actually want to have to spend money to put a winning product out
08:13on the field if I'm still getting paid regardless?
08:17And that's the issue here.
08:19So, you know, if only the Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox or Giants can afford the best of
08:25the best, then you've got an issue here right now.
08:28You really do.
08:29You do have an issue because let's understand this as well.
08:32Like, without looking at the exact, like, payrolls and structures of the teams.
08:36You know, the Tampa Bay Rays, 54 and 53.
08:38They never spend money.
08:39They're in fourth place in the AL East.
08:43The Orioles, notorious for saying, you know, remember the Angelos family?
08:46We don't want to spend any money.
08:47We make money here.
08:48And heck, the Angelos family actually let the Washington Nationals into their market because
08:52Major League Baseball gave them a chunk of money.
08:54That's how crazy they are as a business.
08:56The Chicago White Sox in last place.
08:58Not spending money right now, but still a big market team.
09:00They should.
09:00The Royals under 500, which, yes, they did win a championship a couple years ago, which
09:04now feels like 10 years ago, but they're perennial basement dwellers here.
09:08Look at the A's.
09:09They told you all the time.
09:10We don't even have a home right now.
09:11We're not spending any money.
09:12They got 46 wins.
09:13They're in last place.
09:14The Washington Nationals, who technically are in a decent-sized market, even though they
09:18split it with the Baltimore Orioles, they win a championship, and they sell their team,
09:22and they're in dead last.
09:23And then, oh, yeah, the NL Central, the Pittsburgh Pirates, notorious for not spending money.
09:27They're in dead last.
09:28The Colorado Rockies are basically telling you, we play in a big market, but we don't
09:32feel like spending money, and we'll be in dead last for the next decade to come.
09:36So for me, when I set up the landscape of Major League Baseball, Joe, answer me this,
09:39though.
09:40How can you have a business structure that rewards a team for spending no money?
09:45Like, if you are the Marlins, right, one of the more profitable teams in Major League
09:48Baseball, I say, wait a second.
09:50Nobody probably watches them on TV in South Florida.
09:53Nobody goes to the baseball games.
09:54How can that be?
09:55Well, the Marlins understand, Joe.
09:57If they have, like, a $30 million payroll and keep it bargain basement, and the Dodgers
10:02start signing guys like Otani left and right, Major League Baseball will essentially give
10:06them the money for their payroll, and everything else is gravy on top of that.
10:10The Yankees talk about it all the time.
10:12If I'm going to spend money, and I'm going to try to win a World Series, how can I not
10:15be as profitable selling out stadiums in the New York market than the Marlins are when
10:19they don't even try?
10:20How did we get a business structure like that that was accepted in baseball, Joe?
10:25It's, it's, and that's the problem here, right?
10:28Now, I get the argument that, you know, guys like Scott Boris, and for his clients, they're
10:35going to do everything in their power to make sure that never happens.
10:38Well, that's because Scott Boris represents the top, you know, the one percenters here in
10:43Major League Baseball.
10:44Guys that are, they know they can go out and get that money, and he'll go out and get
10:50that.
10:50But what about, and this is the other problem, what about the guy that makes $4 million,
10:54the league minimum here?
10:55What chance does he have?
10:57And why is it, would he make more money if there was a cap here?
11:02Because Harper's not making $350 million, so maybe the guy on the bottom of the total
11:07poll, maybe he can even it out here a little bit.
11:10But it's just that they're going to put the Harper's of the world against the minimum
11:15salary guys, and that's how the owners think they're going to end up winning this thing
11:20is by having internal fighting among the players.
11:24It's crazy because, you know, baseball does have one of the more stronger unions out here
11:28in the process.
11:29You know, it's interesting, like the, the way different leagues go about it, right?
11:33We don't get holdouts in Major League Baseball.
11:35Isn't that interesting, though?
11:36Like the union just doesn't accept that as a way of like a ploy where it's like, I'm
11:40in the last year of my deal.
11:41I make $32 million.
11:43I'm not playing until I get a five-year extension.
11:45No, they play it out right through there.
11:47You take a look at basketball.
11:48Have we ever seen like LeBron James or let's just say a Kobe Bryant back in the day or Charles
11:53Barkley?
11:53I'm holding out this season because I want more money.
11:56Like, it's funny the way things work where they understand once they get the free agency.
11:59And there's a lot of things that help the owners.
12:02Like we talk about Major League Baseball being really lucrative, but also once with the NFL,
12:06I'm going to come and I'm going to sign a five-year deal and that's it.
12:08Like there are some players that don't get the free agency in Major League Baseball to
12:11like 29 years old.
12:12And all those arbitration years on top of it, like there are self-imposed like limits on
12:17what some of these players can make.
12:19And you would be astounded like, hey, rookie contract that he's still working on.
12:22Oh, he's in arbitration.
12:23Guy hit 40 home runs last year.
12:24He's a 24-year-old.
12:25What's he making this year?
12:27$850,000 because he went to arbitration and finally got that.
12:31So I think like moving forward, there has to be a happy medium.
12:34But let me ask you this question.
12:35If I give you odds on a lockout or let's just say a strike coming up by the end of this bargaining
12:40or even before it, what do you put those odds at?
12:44Oh, I think it's, I think you're heading, I think you're close to 70% chance there's going
12:49to be a strike here.
12:50I really, really do.
12:52Because more and more owners are continuing to talk about limits and caps and those types
12:58of things.
12:59And again, it's Manfred controls the power here.
13:03So you know what the owners are going to do here, Donnie, right?
13:06They're going to go, oh, okay, so you don't want to cap.
13:08Well, you know what?
13:09We haven't been drug testing for this, this, this, or this.
13:12So you know what?
13:14Now we'll go ahead and implement all these other things that majorly, I mean, it's going
13:19to be a battle and I don't think it's going to get prettier.
13:22I think it's going to get uglier.
13:23And it would not shock me if maybe even in six months from now, Donnie, we're going,
13:28there's a strike happening.
13:29It's like a 99% chance there is a strike coming.
13:33Yeah.
13:34And also like they start to get that war chest together where you save up for the players
13:37so players don't make that much money and all that stuff.
13:39That's going to start to come.
13:40You see about that in other leagues when they start to disperse that money, but also understand
13:44this, like major league baseball went through a devastating strike slash lockout in the
13:491990s, you know, okay, baseball came back because it was a dead sport where they said,
13:54all right, baseball looked the other way and goes, you guys juice to the gills.
13:58People love home runs.
13:59We saw home runs absolutely flying out of the ballpark, the race between Mark McGuire and
14:04Sammy Sosa and that summer of 1998 saves baseball as baseball goes.
14:09We know some nefarious things are happening right now, but we need to get our business
14:12back on track and this is a way to do it.
14:14I wonder how the public in this fast wave, exciting environment of all social media where
14:18baseball is gone.
14:20I will be mad because I love to watch it and gamble on it and handicap it in the summertime
14:23months.
14:24But I got to tell you, it's a lot of people out there, Joe Ranieri, and April, May, and
14:28June aren't going to say like, oh, I wish major league baseball was here.
14:31And that's being honest.
14:34That's, and that's a, and that's a problem here.
14:36And the owners know it because you strike again, you run the risk, Donnie, of people never coming
14:42back because you don't have the Sosas and Maguires and Cal Ripken Juniors of the world
14:46to save you.
14:47Exactly.
14:49Just the way it is.
14:50And next up, the way it is in Chicago, Milwaukee, this is time to visit.
14:54We'll talk about it next.
14:55Major league baseball.
14:56It's hit a few of these bad boys today.
14:57Some of the biggest games across the sport today.
15:00We've got a full slate here.
15:01Loved it.
15:01Loved the slate yesterday on a Monday.
15:03Another big slate today on a Tuesday as we gear up for Thursday's trade deadline, which
15:07takes place at six o'clock.
15:08We'll see some of these guys will be on the move.
15:10But the one thing we do know is statistics, they're on the move.
15:13And so are the standings here.
15:149-0-3, 9-0-4.
15:15Let's get started.
15:16Milwaukee, fresh off of the victory last night for the Brewers, 8-4 over the Cubs.
15:20Colin Wright on the mound today to take a look at Quentin Priester on the opposite side.
15:24Two right-handed pitchers, a 7-40 start tonight.
15:26The total of this game opened up at 9 overnight, Joe.
15:28We're down to 8.5.
15:29Up the side, a minus-130 price that opened in the favor of Milwaukee is down a little bit.
15:34Looking more of that 115-105 split as you see the graphic there, 116-102.
15:40I've got to tell you, if you look at the starting pitchers here, Joe, number three on my analytics
15:44card today over the past, what, 45 or so 40 innings is Quentin Priester, a 270 ERA, a
15:502.81 XFIP number.
15:52You take a look at Colin Ray.
15:53His last 40 innings pitched, 4.28 ERA, 4.82 XFIP number.
15:58You might not have heard a lot about Quentin Priester, but this is really the charm of the
16:01Milwaukee Brewers.
16:02Guys you haven't heard of having really good seasons, and I've got to tell you, I do like
16:06Milwaukee again today, Joe.
16:08Yeah, I do, and I like the over, Donnie, because I don't trust Colin Ray and the way that Milwaukee
16:15is swinging the bats, and obviously, if you can drop three home runs last night against
16:20your best pitcher, what are they going to do to Colin Ray?
16:23Here today, I think that number is a little low at eight and a half, and both bullpens
16:29should be in pretty good shape, or though I believe McGill ended up getting the save
16:32last night for Milwaukee, but it was a four-run win, so I still think runs are coming.
16:39I'm with you on Milwaukee.
16:40I like the over, eight and a half.
16:43We'll see if it finds out today, but every win, so crucial in the series.
16:46Extend your lead, try to tie the other team up, because they have a one-game lead here,
16:50fill the Milwaukee Brewers.
16:51Game number two, we'll take a look at a 940 start tonight out on the West Coast, 907-908.
16:55Fun game last night, unless you had the Mets as a money line ticket.
16:59Easy victory for them, turned into a loss as the Padres walk them off.
17:02Tonight, the New York Mets are going to show Sean Minaya on the mound, the left-handed
17:05pitcher, going up against Mr. Burgert for San Diego, the right-handed pitcher.
17:09This line opened up, minus 120 price overnight.
17:11Still sits in that same category.
17:13Minus 120s to minus 130s in the betting landscape, as you see the graphic about to pop up.
17:17A minus 126 price with a total that's listed at eight.
17:21Both of these guys, interesting enough, over the past six weeks, each have 12 and a third
17:25innings pitch.
17:25So not a big track record, but Minaya's got a 2.19 ERA and a 2.84 XF number.
17:31When we take a look at our guy, Burgert, down here, his 12 and a third innings pitch, a 3.65
17:35ERA and a 4.33 XF number.
17:38Technically, I think you have the better team and the better side on Sean Minaya, but they
17:42are a road team in this environment, coming off a loss.
17:44Are you taking that short price here on the Mets or maybe more fireworks from the Padres
17:49tonight?
17:50Yeah, I think we might get some more fireworks here.
17:53I do like the Mets' chances of bouncing back in this one, but I wouldn't be shocked on maybe
17:59a little warm evening there in Southern Cal that we can get a few more than eight runs.
18:04I don't like the Mets' bullpen at all here.
18:08We had some, Suarez blew the lead, saved last night, and then was bailed out in the bottom
18:13of the night.
18:15I think we might get more runs coming here tonight with both these teams trying to turn
18:19it up a notch here.
18:20You can only play so many 3-2 games here.
18:22I think we got more offense tonight as well in this one.
18:26Maybe more offense in this next game as well.
18:29Yesterday, you had one of the better hitting situations, which is not weird from a pitcher's
18:32perspective in Kansas City.
18:33Hot temperatures in the 90s with the wind blowing out.
18:36If we take a look at the temperatures tonight in the game we're going to look at in Kansas City,
18:39I have, once again, 94 degrees at first pitch with a light wind blowing out the left yield
18:43in Kauffman.
18:44That's for the Atlanta Braves and the Kansas City Royals.
18:46The Braves' offense came to light yesterday, a day later, because I thought they would come
18:50to life the day before, but they didn't.
18:52Fetty's on the mound, though.
18:53Taking a look at Seth Lugo, a 740 start tonight, and look at this price point.
18:57Fetty's a terrible pitcher.
18:59Lugo's on the mound.
19:00He's only a minus 124 favorite today in a total that's listed once again at 9.5, which means
19:04you need double digits.
19:05I have Fetty as the worst pitcher on my card today, and we're looking dead in the eyes
19:11of basically a 10 total today out at Kauffman for Kansas City.
19:14Joe, what do you think about this game between Fetty and Lugo?
19:17I love Kansas City in this spot.
19:20Listen, the Braves, you have no idea how rare that road win was for them yesterday.
19:27They had three home runs, but here's the best part, is they walked 14 times in that game.
19:33That's not happening with Seth Lugo on the mound here.
19:36I like them to bounce back.
19:38He just got his money, right?
19:39He got the extension.
19:41You know, he's going to be able to pitch with a sigh of relief there, and Atlanta's entire
19:47opening day rotation, by the way, is now on the IL.
19:51So don't think we're going to get back-to-back efforts like that from the Braves.
19:56I like Lugo.
19:57I like the price.
19:58Don't like Fetty.
19:59I'll take Kansas City.
20:01You take a look at Fetty.
20:02Last six weeks, Joe, 22 and two-thirds innings pitch, and he basically was released by his
20:07team, then traded for basically cash considerations.
20:10He has a 10 ERA over his past 22 and two-thirds innings pitch.
20:13He got a 6.25 XFIP where, like, you usually see that high XFIP.
20:17It's like, well, I only had like two innings, and I really got roughed up.
20:19But through 22 and two-thirds innings, it basically was like everybody's getting fly balls,
20:23home runs, and doubles off the guy.
20:24If you just get it to its more simpler form here, his last 71 batters that he faced, a
20:29.323 ISO power number against, which is insanely high, a weighted on base percentage of .503,
20:35like, that's combining lefty and righty batters.
20:37Like, hey, well, he only struggles with left-handed batters and dominates righties.
20:41Everybody's beating him up.
20:42Why?
20:42He strikes nobody out, walks too many players, and gives up hard contact.
20:46You take a look at the lineup tonight for the Kansas City Royals, at least he anticipated,
20:49right?
20:50India, high weighted on base percentage.
20:51WIT, high weighted on base percentage.
20:53Decent ISOs from Pasquantino and Mikel Garcia.
20:56Salvador Perez, off the chart numbers.
20:58John Raffier, 50 at bats, a .233 ISO power number.
21:01And also, not a lot of Ks in the lineup.
21:03So, if I look at the lineup itself for Kansas City, Jones, say, there's nine guys anticipated.
21:07Seven of those guys don't strike out.
21:09A pitcher that can't strike anybody out.
21:11And 90-degree temperatures, like, we should be liking Kansas City.
21:14But the thought process, and then it creeps in.
21:16It's like, all right, the Braves bats were hot yesterday.
21:18Could they stay hot today?
21:19But, come on now.
21:20I think I have the better lineup and the better pitcher.
21:23Why are I looking at a minus 175 price today, Joe?
21:26Yeah, that is a great question.
21:30And I don't know.
21:31I'm with you here, Donnie.
21:32I think we're going to have some interesting ones, interesting scores here today.
21:37Last night was a bit of a head-scratcher across the board.
21:40I think we get a little bit more, a little more sensible and, yeah, a little more favorite action here tonight.
21:47Yeah, we should.
21:48And, by the way, take a look at the rest of that Major League Baseball card.
21:51It does start early today, people.
21:52Why?
21:53We have a doubleheader between Toronto and Baltimore, which we're going to hit next.
21:56As well as take a look at those New York Yankees taking on the Tampa Bay Rays.
21:59And much more baseball on the docket as we wait for the trade deadline to occur.
22:04But I'm seeing more and more, Joe.
22:06No seven-and-a-halves, no eight-and-a-halves, nines, nine-and-a-halves, tens out here.
22:11Runs and more runs, people.
22:12That's what we love.
22:13Major League Baseball on the early line.
22:15The best place to be.
22:16Right back out of people.
22:17Major League Baseball today.
22:18Get started right away.
22:19A day-night doubleheader.
22:2112-35 start and a 6-35 start between Toronto and Baltimore.
22:25Is it important for Baltimore, Joe Ranieri?
22:27No.
22:27Is it important for Toronto?
22:30Absolutely.
22:30They got smoked yesterday in their game going up against Baltimore.
22:34The Baltimore bats got hot, and they just couldn't catch up.
22:37But sometimes it's tough to understand who these starters are going to be.
22:40Anticipation at 12-35 for Fisher versus Morton.
22:44And game number two, Toronto's going to throw Lauer against Martin for Baltimore.
22:48So Morton and Martin as a law firm today going up against the Toronto Blue Jays.
22:54It's tough for me because hear me out on this.
22:56I always think of a doubleheader as both teams are going to win each game.
22:59That's really the way it falls.
23:00So if you are a good baseball team like Toronto, you don't want doubleheaders
23:05because you feel you're better than Baltimore and you can beat them on back-to-back days.
23:08But if you are a team that's like struggling and bad, it's like, yeah, give us a doubleheader.
23:12They win the first game.
23:13They probably won't have enough available for game number two in their bullpen or their closer
23:17because they probably had to use them.
23:18How do you approach a doubleheader?
23:20And also, we're looking at low numbers here.
23:22Like game number one, Baltimore minus 132.
23:24Game number two, roughly a pick-em between these two pitchers.
23:27Do you bet the first game and forget about the second or wait for the first game to get over
23:31and then bet the second?
23:32How do you do it?
23:33Well, I mean, listen, Baltimore, a lot of good things worked out for them last night
23:39against Chris Bassett.
23:40Number one, they ended up getting Rushman back in that lineup, three for five with a
23:46couple of doubles and two ribbies.
23:48He was good.
23:49Laureano has been crushing the ball.
23:51Mullins, these are all possible trade guys, too, with Baltimore.
23:56Westberg, they've got a lot of guys swinging the bat really well right now.
24:00And then the Blue Jays, is Springer playing or not?
24:03Because he got drilled in the head in the game last night and then left the game.
24:07And that is a different lineup.
24:10Springer has been phenomenal for them here over the last month while they've been getting
24:14red hot.
24:15So I would look for runs and maybe more specifically with Charlie Morton on the mounds.
24:22I'd look for a few more runs than people think here.
24:25I know it's 10, Donnie, but you tell me how you're sweating out an under in this first one.
24:30Now, you use the right terminology, sweating it out, Joe.
24:33Why is that?
24:3395 degrees at first pitch in the afternoon game.
24:36So let's understand this because we're human beings and you have to be a pro baseball player.
24:41You go out and use some effort in 95 degrees in the sun, in the outfield for three hours.
24:48Then you take a small break and they go, hey, I don't have energy to play tonight.
24:52Watch out for game number two.
24:54I'm just saying.
24:54I'm just saying watch out for game number two tonight and what those starting lineups
24:57would be.
24:58Because doubleheaders in 70 degrees, a little bit different than doubleheaders in 95 degree
25:02temperatures in the humidity in the Charm City.
25:05Let's head up to New York here and take a look at Tampa Bay versus New York.
25:08Boyle and Freed.
25:09Freed the left, you'll be on the mound.
25:10He's a heavy favorite.
25:11We're not surprised by that.
25:12Some outlets as high as a minus 195 to 196, depending on where you're shopping at.
25:16A total in this game, let's sit at eight and a half across the board.
25:20Boyle going against Freed.
25:22Heavy price on Freed here.
25:24How do we feel about the Yankees?
25:25I know you liked the Yankees yesterday.
25:27Come on now, Yanks.
25:27What do you got for us today?
25:28Yeah, it was just ridiculous.
25:32This is, here's the problem with Freed is that unless I'm missing something, you can't
25:39watch him and tell me you think this guy's 100% because he is absolutely, there's something
25:44going on with him.
25:46Blister, no blister.
25:47He has not been the same pitcher now that he was to start the season.
25:52So, now we got a Yankees team who, without Aaron Judge, we already, we've seen this.
25:57They've played 56 games without him last year, and they were bottom five at every offensive
26:03category there was.
26:04They could not score.
26:06Does that continue with a bullpen game here?
26:0994 degrees.
26:10I'll tell you what, I think they're going to score.
26:13I think both teams are going to score here.
26:15I got no problem looking at the over in this game in the Bronx tonight.
26:18Yeah, and again, you're going to get those warm conditions.
26:21You're going to get two pitchers, and you're right, the blister, like Max Freed was, is
26:24he the Cy Young?
26:25Like, is he the Cy Young of the American League who was pitching that well?
26:28And then it's like, okay, I'm going to miss some time.
26:29I got a blister on my finger.
26:30Maybe that's affecting the breaking ball.
26:32But the one thing that we do know is the Yankee bats didn't come to life yesterday, only
26:35two runs.
26:36This is a pitcher you probably can get after it.
26:3890 degrees at first pitch.
26:39This isn't even a day game.
26:40This is a 705 start in one of the better hitting ballparks in Major League Baseball.
26:43If you look at the lineup over the past 30 days for the Yankees against right
26:46into pitching, it checks out extremely well, Joe.
26:49Grisham, Bellinger, Stanton, Chisholm, Dominguez, McMahon, and Wells, really high numbers.
26:54And we're not talking about, hey, they hit lefties well.
26:56They had 15 at-bats over the past month.
26:58Look at some of these at-bats, Joe.
26:5954, 52, 71, 56, 70, 65, 71, and 41.
27:04You have some good sample sizes here where we should be getting runs tonight.
27:08Just a matter of those Max Freed starts and how they wind up.
27:11But if you are looking at that price point, the one thing that is tough to do is, hey, I
27:14want to take the Yankees.
27:15Sometimes it's better, but if the Yankees win, they're probably going to score five runs
27:18tonight.
27:19Maybe that's the better way to go on the team total than laying almost a minus 200 price
27:24on the New York Yankees.
27:25Full card today.
27:26We'll see how it plays out.
27:27We got guests, people, coming up.
27:29That includes Kevin Walsh.
27:30I think he used to host at one time for TEL.
27:33We'll find that out and much more from the Walsh man.
27:36Oh, we are having some fun on the early line here on a Tuesday morning.
27:40No doubt about it.
27:41It's myself, Donnie Wrightside.
27:42It's Joe Ranieri, and look at this.
27:45How did we get this guy?
27:46This guy hasn't seen 10 a.m. in months, and now he's up, rising and grinding with us.
27:50It's Kevin Walsh, people.
27:52Welcome, Kevin Walsh, to the early line.
27:54You ever been on the show before?
27:55I sure have.
27:57And I got to say, I imagine this is the first time the two of you have smiled in a couple
28:02of days.
28:02So I'm happy to get here.
28:04Bring up the spirits.
28:06Get everybody excited.
28:07I mean, it's almost football season, right, Donnie?
28:11You're through the dregs of summer, and now we're here.
28:14We're getting ready.
28:16A lot to be excited about.
28:18Now, if anybody doesn't know, like, Kevin doesn't really make appearances on the early
28:21line because in the off-season outside of football, he tells me he doesn't have much
28:25to talk about.
28:26He's got to save all his thoughts.
28:27He has his own show.
28:28Can't use any of that material because there's not enough to go around.
28:31By the way, last time you were on the early line, he tried to sneak in a donut one
28:35time, and people weren't too happy about that.
28:37Do you remember that?
28:37No, that was a few times ago.
28:39I think the last time I was on the early line, it was live from New Orleans, I'm pretty
28:45sure.
28:46And the segment ended with Lisey banging on the hotel door, wondering why I wasn't
28:51answering his phone call.
28:53So I'm pretty sure that's the most recent time.
28:58I actually thought the last time was a certain Philadelphia 76ers game.
29:02They got knocked out of the playoffs where that may be where we're talking about a
29:05certain bar that had a good game or not, but we don't have to go down that.
29:08Who did he play for at this point, which is a perfect scenario of who he played for
29:13today.
29:13Aaron Judge, we know you're a Yankee fan.
29:15We're watching this.
29:16Just a few years ago, Kevin, a minus 20,000 price was showing up on Aaron Judge to be
29:21the MVP.
29:22We reassessed those odds today.
29:24He's not even the favorite right now.
29:25It's Cal Rowley at a minus 125 price.
29:27It's Aaron Judge at a minus 105.
29:29If you take a look at the statistics here, 41 bombs for Raleigh, 37 bombs for Aaron Judge,
29:3585 RBI, 87 RBI, right in the same mix.
29:38I asked Joe Renier this question yesterday.
29:40Does it just come down to who hits more home runs is going to be the MVP this year?
29:45And how do you feel about this winding up with Judge on the IL?
29:49Yeah, I think the biggest reason for the move on Judge is we don't know if he's coming back.
29:53I think that's the panic that exists out there, and it's why those numbers are wrong.
30:00We just don't know which way.
30:01If Judge isn't coming back, then Cal Rowley should be minus 500 or better.
30:06If Judge is coming back, he should go right back to minus 300 because that's the most pro
30:11Cal Rowley graphic I've ever seen.
30:14We remove batting average, slugging, on base, OPS, wins above, replace, home runs at RBI.
30:22All right, Cal Rowley's got this whole thing figured out, but a batting average 70 points
30:27less than that of Aaron Judge.
30:29So this is an instance for me where if Judge is back by mid-August, he should still be the
30:35favorite.
30:35I just feel like we have no idea if Aaron Judge is actually coming back.
30:38Well, I better hope he comes back.
30:42And by the way, I was on the Yankees last night, Walsh, and everything was going swimmingly
30:47until Luka Doncic shows up in the booth for some reason for like three innings, and then
30:54everything went off the rail.
30:56I'm like, who's letting him on the broadcast right now?
30:59This is awful.
31:00But you bring up a great point when it comes to Aaron Judge, though.
31:04If both guys are close to 50 home runs or a few more than 50 home runs, what's the
31:11differential between those two, Cal Rowley and things?
31:14I mean, don't we have to look at media market and all the other stats that Judge brings to
31:19the table?
31:20Just hitting 55 home runs is not going to be enough for Cal Rowley to win this, no?
31:25Yeah, I wouldn't think so, especially because of the, I mean, Cal Rowley, right, second most
31:30home runs ever at the all-star break behind the Barry Bond season.
31:33Just Cal Rowley individually, I think, 55 home runs, I'm not going to say that's a
31:38disappointment, but we're wondering, can this guy push the American League record that
31:42Judge currently holds?
31:44Now, if he's able to break through that record, I think that could certainly be enough to swing
31:48it in his direction.
31:49But let's not forget Aaron Judge was, again, pacing towards a potential triple crown.
31:54At the time of the injury, Aaron Judge was actually still favored to finish with the most
31:58home runs in the regular season.
32:00And again, if Judge is back in a timely enough fashion, something like that, to me, is still
32:06on the board.
32:06I also imagine, Joe, part of the reason Luka showing up was maybe threw everything off.
32:12He's so skinny now.
32:14Nobody can focus.
32:15They're like, is that?
32:16Is that Luka?
32:18Luka Doncic?
32:20And that probably, there's not a lot of runs in that game because Luka's so skinny.
32:26Yep.
32:26Man is in shape right now, getting after right now, Luka Doncic.
32:29And I saw him with the, I think it was the bat and the double gum cleats, as they call
32:33him for Aaron Judge yesterday.
32:35We'll see how it turns out for Aaron Judge.
32:36Also, the Yankees are an 11-1 price right now to win the World Series.
32:41The Dodgers are the plus 220 price here.
32:42The Mets follow by 8-1.
32:44And the Phillies are plus 850.
32:45But let's head to another topic here.
32:47And that's giving out picks here, Joe.
32:49We want to go 2-0 today.
32:50That's the goal.
32:51And here's bye-bye-bye.
32:52All right, Joe Ranieri, I know the Yankees let you down yesterday.
33:03So today, heading back into the sports landscape, you can do Major League Baseball, the WNBA,
33:07whatever it is.
33:08But I got a feeling, you're going back to baseball, and you want revenge.
33:11Who are you going with today?
33:13Yeah, I am going back to baseball because the Yankees disappointed.
33:16But I do not believe the Kansas City Royals are disappointing tonight here at home as they get
33:24ready to take on the Atlanta Braves in Game 2.
33:27And listen, nice rare road win by Atlanta yesterday.
33:32Three home runs, but the 14 walks is just head-scratching.
33:36It really is.
33:37Seth Lugo on the mound tonight.
33:39Just got himself an extension, got his money on a two-year deal.
33:45He is going to be able to exhale a little bit here.
33:48I think he'll have no problem limiting this Braves team who, let's face it, they are just,
33:55they've won five times as a road underdog in 21 attempts.
33:59This is not a good team on the road.
34:02They're not a good team at all.
34:03I think Lugo handles business, and you got Eric Fetty going for the Braves.
34:08That's how bad it is for the Braves right now, is that they had to get this guy off
34:13the scrap heap from the Cardinals because every one of their opening day starters is
34:17on the IL.
34:18Yeah, no.
34:19I'm going Kansas City at a cheap price to get it done and bounce back here tonight.
34:23Yeah, it's one of those games where you don't bet it.
34:25You're like, what am I doing here?
34:26Like, Lugo was on the mound.
34:27It's just that Fetty gave up six runs over two innings.
34:29I stayed away from it.
34:30And then there's the other side of it.
34:31It's like, of course, you knew Fetty would basically get cut, reappear in a great hitting
34:35condition ballpark with 95 degrees, and go six innings, give up one underrun, something
34:39he never does.
34:40He's a bad pitcher.
34:41He should get hit today.
34:43I like where you're going with that, Joe Ranieri.
34:44For myself, I'm going to have some fun with this.
34:46I'm going to include two games.
34:47And in these two games, Joe Ranieri, each team in those games to score at least two runs
34:52here.
34:52That's between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates
34:56and the San Francisco Giants.
34:58Luzardo has been really struggling for the Phillies.
35:00You know what?
35:01The one thing that Chicago White Sox do well, they hit left-handed pitching.
35:04They hit the best maybe left-handed pitcher in the game yesterday in the National League
35:08and torched them up for six runs.
35:10Their team total yesterday, it was only two and a half.
35:12You take a look at Cannon on the mound, the Phillies yesterday.
35:15Sometimes they do struggle, but Bryce Harpride, an RBI double, was drove in two just by himself.
35:19I think each one of those teams gets at least two runs there.
35:22And then game number two, Falter is a terrible pitcher.
35:24Verlander is a terrible pitcher.
35:26Oh, Don, it's a hitter's.
35:27It's not a hitter's environment.
35:28It's a pitcher's environment.
35:28You see last night, double-digit runs in that game.
35:31Each one of those two teams, Joe, to get two runs.
35:34So Phillies, White Sox, Pirates, and Giants, each to get two runs apiece.
35:39Minus 125, Bryce, have some fun.
35:41Early game, late game, and away we go.
35:43How about that for a bye-bye-bye?
35:44Switching it up a little bit here.
35:46Ooh, all under the clock, too.
35:49Outstanding stuff.
35:50And yes, I think a lot more overs we're going to see here over the next coming days
35:55with the temperatures across the country.
35:57Okay.
