Former Mets GM Steve Phillips joins Shan, RJ & Bobby to break down the Rangers’ second-half surge and what moves they could make at the trade deadline. Phillips discusses pitching needs, potential fits, Bochy’s future, and how aggressive Chris Young might be. Plus, he explains the psychology of standing pat at the deadline, shares his thoughts on deGrom’s outlook, and reveals why the Rangers could be the scariest team in the AL playoff picture if everything clicks.

00:00you change your opinion on the rangers after the all-star break you know i kept thinking they have
00:22a run in them and uh and because i think their offense is better than what they've shown so
00:27yeah i i believe that they were going to make a run and that they'd have a shot to get into it
00:31uh and it's just been such a weird year for them because they've not hit when i think we all
00:37thought one of the things they would do would be to hit uh and their bullpen has been better than i
00:42think any of us would have anticipated considering that you know they didn't make any big moves in
00:46the bullpen and so uh it's been an interesting year for them and i don't know really what to expect
00:52but you know i do like the track record of some of the players there that makes me believe that
00:58they do have a run to try to get back to the playoffs steve since june 7th they're number
01:03one in in baseball and runs per game it's like five 5.4 you know that's that's that's not nothing
01:09it's over a month almost a month and a half like how long do you go before you change your perception
01:14on what your team is this late in the season yeah i think that that um you know i think you just have
01:21to go with it if it's changing that's enough of a track record for me to say you know what we're
01:27we're finding our stride right now we're catching our stride we're going to get back into this thing
01:32uh and make a run and so and plus you know with degrom and avaldi you've got two guys who really
01:37you know give a chance every time they go out there to compete to win a game and a real chance to win
01:42those games and so you know i think that that you know i would still keep an open mind i thought
01:47naylor would have been a good fit for them at first base uh and uh but you know they didn't go
01:52that direction with it i think they're going to try to get some pitching still uh but i do expect
01:57chris young to be very aggressive here at the deadline
