As well as being one of the world’s largest emitters of carbon dioxide, the construction industry is also one of the main contributors of waste to landfill in the world. Innovators are racing for solutions like the K-Briq, a green alternative to traditional bricks, it’s made of old building rubbish.

00:00This innovative brick is tackling not just one environmental problem for the
00:09construction industry but two. It's made of old building waste that otherwise
00:14would end up in landfill but it's also manufactured in a far greener way than
00:19traditional bricks. Sam Chapman together with his co-founder Gabriela Madero saw
00:24an opportunity to stop old demolition and construction material going to waste.
00:29This is like a traditional extruded brick so traditional bricks are made through
00:34extrusion but we wanted to mimic how people see and use a traditional brick
00:39but with our obviously our new innovation and our reuse. This is an ultra-low
00:44carbon building brick made from recycled demolition and construction waste. Over
00:4990% of the material used to make this brick is from recycling.
00:59So there's plenty of wood.
