Man dies after being tasered by Police in a Perth backyard

An investigation is underway in Perth, after a man died minutes after being tasered by police in Perth overnight. Police say they were trying to restrain the man, who was acting erratically in the backyard of a home in the city's north-east.

00:00Well, it's very early into the investigation at this stage.

00:06WA police spoke with media not long ago,

00:09detailing how officers tasered a man

00:12who was apparently behaving aggressively

00:14when they were responding to an incident overnight.

00:18Police say they received reports at about 12.30 this morning

00:21of a man acting erratically on Priestly Street

00:25in Perth's northeastern suburb of Embleton.

00:28Police say the man broke into a home and smashed the windows.

00:33When police arrived, they located the man in the backyard.

00:38A taser was deployed by an officer during attempts to detain the man.

00:43The man was eventually restrained,

00:45but minutes later appeared to suffer a medical episode.

00:49Officers immediately provided first aid

00:51and notified St John Ambulance to provide assistance.

00:54The man was conveyed by St John Ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital,

00:57but later died.

01:00Due to the fact the man had been in police custody,

01:03prior to his death,

01:04officers from the Internal Investigation Unit

01:06will investigate his death as a death in police custody

01:09and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

01:15and loved ones during this difficult time.

01:22who acted quickly to provide medical assistance to the man,

01:26as well as paramedics and medical staff.
