Melbourne’s distinctive building open to the public access part of the city’s annual open house event

From historic landmarks to studios and control rooms the public is being given access to some of Melbourne’s most distinctive buildings. A series of talks and tours kicked off today as part of the annual open house event.

00:15The first day of the open house event saw hundreds flood the ABC's Southbank Studios,

00:35It's just lovely, especially when you listen to radio at home,

00:39to be able to see the actual people who deliver the programs.

00:44This year the doors are open to roughly 200 buildings around the city,

00:49including Melbourne's first modern skyscraper, once Australia's tallest, Orica House.

00:55Bringing back memories.

00:57They've called it the glass house.

00:59So it was one of the first using a lot of glass and steel.

01:03And it was fascinating the way that the people who built it were standing on beams out in the swinging open air.

01:10And offering a new view on an old design.

01:13I didn't like this building when it was built, but over time I've appreciated 1960s architecture.

01:19Thousands of people tried to get tickets for a rare glimpse from the other side of Melbourne's traffic, the control room,

01:25where staff monitor the city's tunnels and freeways.

01:29I've always been interested in our road network.

01:31Ever even since I was a kid I've been fascinated by transport, whether it's roads, trains, trams.

01:35The team monitor about 45 kilometres of road from the Monash Freeway to the Westgate Bridge.

01:42They actually look at everything, looking after a stray cat on the road or even a dog walking through the tunnel.

01:48A weekend of revelations and celebrations.
