00:00Charterhouse Resource Centre was founded in 2011 by Jason and Caroline Smith. Charterhouse
00:06is a community interest company that provides a range of services for adults with learning
00:13disabilities, the elderly and those living with dementia. We offer daycare for adults
00:18with learning disabilities and physical disabilities, the elderly and those living with dementia.
00:23We also have a home care service, outreach and respite and we have the sensory room, the
00:33Well System medical bed and now our hydrotherapy pool. The Well System medical is a massage
00:41bed device that provides a massage without a hands-on approach. It benefits medical ailments
00:50such as sciatica, joint pain, sports injuries. It can be accessed by any adults with any kind
00:58of symptoms that people would usually go for a normal massage for but they don't like the
01:03hands-on approach. We started the build in 2024, April. We had the team from Tech Extravations
01:12and Ground Works. They did all the footings and erected the building. Then SSL Pools came
01:19in and they've managed all the filtration of the pool and doing all the technical side
01:26of things. We've received quite a lot of support from Key Funds, Port England, Screwfix and the
01:34Lotto Community Fund. We've also had donations from Plumbase in Nelson, Crime Paints, Stewards,
01:41painting and decorating supplies to help us decorate the inside of the facility.
01:46What inspired the idea to create a hydrotherapy pool at Charterhouse?
01:51It was through talks with our service users, physiotherapists, other members of the community
01:58that all have a need to access a hydrotherapy pool but unfortunately there's just no availability
02:05of the hydrotherapy pools that are available and for some people it means driving three
02:10hours just to get there. So that's why we decided that there was a real need for a hydrotherapy
02:16pool in Burnley. I think it will benefit the Burnley community because we do have a lot
02:22of people with a great need for this. We've just recently learnt that the hydrotherapy pool
02:26at the hospital closed down and quite a lot of people haven't been able to access hydrotherapy
02:31since that closed down. A lot of people in the community do need access to hydrotherapy but
02:38there's just no availability anywhere else. You can use hydrotherapy for a lot of different
02:45ailments, sports injuries, head injuries and traumas and also it's just a really nice space
02:54for a private swimming experience. We've got sensory lights and sensory equipment, we have
03:04surround sound speakers and it's a completely private session to that person booking.
03:09We're a disability friendly company so all of our building is completely accessible to everybody.
03:15We have ramps and hoists, changing beds, we have a fully accessible bathroom for people
03:22that need it. We just want our hydrotherapy pool and our massage bed and sensory room to
03:30be available to anybody that needs to access it. So we've done everything we can to make
03:36sure that it's easily accessible for everyone. We have had a lot of positive feedback and suggestions
03:45how we can make it even better than it is. We've had a lot of support from our local community,
03:52especially the surrounding community to our building, our near neighbours, everyone's been
03:57really supportive of everything that we're doing. We just feel like they've just been so supportive
04:05whilst we've been trying to navigate through getting the building done. We've had quite
04:09a lot of setbacks so we're on the right track now and hopefully receive a lot more support.
