00:00Welcome to StartupRed.io, your podcast and YouTube blog covering the German startup scene
00:13with news, interviews, and live events.
00:19Welcome to this month in German, Swiss, and Austrian startups May 2025.
00:25Welcome to our regular startup news from the German-speaking tech and entrepreneurship scenes in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
00:34Our startup news is recorded with Chris. Hey, how are you doing, man?
00:38Yeah, happy Memorial Day. Summer is kicking off, not weather-wise yet, but otherwise, everyone here in New York is very ready.
00:46As we said, you are in New York. I'm joining from Frankfurt.
00:49Today's news cut is the 23rd of May due to our travels.
00:54As always, all news not yet included will be included in our next news wrap-up,
01:00published before Independence Day for our American audience, July 3rd.
01:05The next news wrap-up after this will be after the summer break on September 1st,
01:11with the wrap-up of everything that was going on in July and August.
01:15We needed to cut our news seriously again, so we have a brief news overview here for you.
01:22We'll have news pieces on our blog that we did not cover.
01:26Otherwise, the news would stretch way too long.
01:29This time, we went through almost 400 pieces for new.
01:32A little disclaimer here. I got up this morning.
01:34I was so tired, mostly due to travel.
01:37I was not forming complete sentences in my mother tongue.
01:40Now it's past 9 p.m., 21 o'clock, and we're just recording this, so please cut me some slack here, okay?
01:47Let's go into our highlights.
01:51May 2025 delivered another high-octane month in the German-Swiss and Austrian startup ecosystem,
01:57with breakthrough funding rounds, transformational M&A activities,
02:02and new unicorns reshaping the European innovation landscape.
02:07Berlin-paced Paloa reached unicorn status after securing 120 million in CERC funding,
02:13cementing its position as leader in agentic AI-powered customer service, meaning AI agents for customer service.
02:26This is the second unicorn coined in Germany in 2025.
02:29Meanwhile, Munich's Quantum Systems raised 160 million euros to expand its AI drone platform,
02:38pushing closer to aerial intelligence dominance in Europe,
02:42in another major shake-up of the mobility tech sector.
02:46U.S.-based ride-hailing app Lyft acquired free now for 175 million euros,
02:53signalling aggressive ride-hailing expansion in Germany, France, and Spain.
03:00On the legal front, CureVac scored a partial victory in its high-profile MRNA battle with BioNTech,
03:09a development that could redefine biotech IP strategy across the European Union.
03:14Talking about the European Union here,
03:16they made headlines with 1.3 billion euro investment push into generative AI and cybersecurity infrastructure,
03:24and the European Investment Bank, EIB, committed a staggering 70 billion,
03:30yes, billion would be, push in fresh startup capital through 2027,
03:35both moves to close the transatlantic funding gap.
03:38On the home front, Austria launched a 1 billion fund-of-fund to boost domestic venture capital deployment,
03:45and Germany posted a modest GDP growth and an uptick in the IFO Business Climate Index,
03:52signalling cautious economic recovery.
03:55Across sectors, standard moments, including Climework's workforce cut amid climate tech recalibration,
04:02new cynicons like Vivid and ESA Aerospace and major acquisition from Knoz's 15 million Web3 buyout in Asia
04:10to fiscally consolidating play in Germany's fiscal tech to commode strategic sale in the digital navigation space.
04:18Startup Radio continues to deliver exclusive startup news,
04:22founder stories, and VC insights from the DACH region,
04:25making this the number one startup podcast for decision makers in the European tech and innovation ecosystem.
04:31On a little bit more informal note,
04:35the day of publication is celebrated as a session of Christ on May 29th, 2025.
04:41It's also Father's Day here in Germany, so happy Father's Day to all fathers out there.
04:48Chris likes it.
04:49If you travel to Germany or do business,
04:51we still have some upcoming holidays, Corpus Christi on June 19th,
04:55so you should not expect most people to be back at the following Friday,

06:19As I said, audio and video will go live on May 29th.
06:23Now a short message from our enablers and then I'll hand over to Chris to the top news.
06:28Okay, to kick us off with the top news of this month,
06:31let's start with good news coming from Parloa.
06:34It's a Berlin-based company that became Germany's second unicorn of 2025.
06:39They ascended to the unicorn status following a $120 million Series C funding round
06:45led by durable capital partners, Altimeter Capital and General Catalyst.
06:51The company specializes in agentic AI for customer service,
06:55offering an AI management platform for enterprise contact centers.
07:00They are enabling the deployment of autonomous AI agents,
07:05which they claim are capable of handling complex customer interaction
07:08across various channels, including phone chat and messaging apps.
07:12This funding round now underscores the growing demand,
07:15obviously for AI native enterprise tools,
07:17since it's the big trend everywhere.
07:20And Parloa seems to be well positioned to be a leader
07:22in that transformation of customer service.
07:24Lyft, the Uber competitor, acquires FreeNow for €175 million,
07:32strategic move to broaden the global footprint of the company
07:36that I think has always been a bit in the shadow of Uber.
07:42And FreeNow is a European ride-hailing platform.
07:47€175 million is the buying price.
07:50I already said that.
07:51It marks Lyft's first major expansion outside North America.
07:54Granting them access to over 150 cities across nine European countries,
07:59including places like London, Paris and Berlin.
08:03FreeNow was originally a joint venture between BMW and Mercedes-Benz
08:07that had written a lot of headlines in the German market
08:10because the luxury car brand competitors
08:13actually work together on the future of mobility.
08:17They have a strong presence in the traditional taxi sector in those countries
08:22and make 90% of their bookings there.
08:25So we will see how FreeNow's integration actually enhances Lyft's competitiveness
08:32against Uber and maybe Bolt in the European market.
08:35It's an interesting development, I guess.
08:39Quantum Systems in Munich has raised €160 million in funding
08:44to advance their AI-powered drone technology.
08:47The investment round was led by Balderton Capital
08:50with participation from Airbus Defence and Space
08:53and other strategic partners.
08:56And it aims at scaling the company's production capabilities
09:00and expand its international presence.
09:04Quantum Systems is, in general, a company that specializes
09:07in developing dual-use unmanned aerial systems
09:11that also claims to integrate AI, edge computing,
09:16and autonomous flight capabilities for applications in defense,
09:21infrastructure monitoring, environmental surveillance, etc.
09:24And with that money, if Quantum Systems becomes a key player
09:28in that growing market, we will see where that goes
09:32from Bavaria into the world.
09:34But CureVac, it's a company based in Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg,
09:41a pharmaceutical company, has reported a partial victory
09:44in its ongoing patent litigation against BioNTech
09:48concerning the mRNA technology that is being used in COVID-19 vaccines.
09:54The European Patent Office has upheld certain claims
09:57of CureVac patents, CureVax patents,
10:00potentially impacting the intellectual property landscape for mRNA,
10:04mRNA-based therapeutics in Europe, which will also be important
10:08because they are hoping that mRNA vaccines and medicine
10:13will also be used in the fight against cancer.
10:16So legal proceedings here might still continue,
10:19but the development signifies a noteworthy moment
10:21in the protection and commercialization of biotech innovation
10:25within the DACH region.
10:28And then we have Manager Magazin honoring the top 100 women
10:33in German business.
10:34Manager Magazin being the biggest monthly business magazine in Germany
10:40and together with the Boston Consulting Group,
10:43they have released their annual list of the 100 most influential women
10:46in German business, celebrating leaders across various industries.
10:51and Prima Interpares has been named Renate Wagner.
11:01She's a board member of Allianz Insurance
11:04for her exemplary leadership in Impact.
11:08So, yeah, I think it's good that we talk about recognizing
11:14the importance of diversity and inclusion in German business
11:19since all the DEI discussion actually seems to be a bit more
11:24on the taking a step back.
11:26That's it with the top news.
11:29Time for some housekeeping and bragging,
11:31and I'll give it back to you.
11:33Awesome. Thank you, Chris.
11:35I have three articles here
11:37because nobody will tell this about us,
11:41so we tell it ourselves.
11:42At one point, I was just getting a daily email
11:46with all the podcast charts achievements of StartupRate.io.
11:51I was wondering, huh, nobody talks about that,
11:53so let's write about that.
11:54At the time, we were in over 20 countries
11:58in the podcast charts, including, of course,
12:00Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
12:02But also, I just checked at the day of the recording
12:06of this year on the 25th of May,
12:08we are in 23 countries in the podcast charts.
12:12Also, we got ranked pretty good in the top 50 globally
12:17across multiple podcast categories,
12:20including business news and technology
12:23by a million podcasts.
12:24We have the link down here.
12:26Plus, we are also in the top 50 management podcast,
12:32top 50 business news,
12:34and top 100 technology news podcasts
12:36on GoodPots in addition to our podcast rankings.
12:39And the influential newsletter podcast today
12:42had us ranked as number one.
12:45Awesome.
12:46Chris, you want to do the ecosystem for Germany
12:51and I do a little bit high-level flying here, right?
12:54Let's talk ecosystem, guys.
12:57Europe.
12:57The European Investment Bank launches
13:0070 billion startup funding initiative.
13:03They announced a new initiative to provide 70 billion
13:06in startup funding by 2027.
13:08This move aims to bridge Europe's investment gap
13:12with the United States sources, Silicon Canals.
13:15The EU also will invest 1.3 billion
13:18in generative AI and cybersecurity projects.
13:22And news a little bit between both.
13:25German companies are unprepared for EU Data Act
13:29is a statement by Bitkom, the trade association.
13:33They had a survey that reveals
13:35that many German companies are unprepared
13:38for EU Data Act, which will come into force
13:42on September 12, 2025.
13:46The act regulates access to user-generated data
13:49aiming to boost Europe's data economy.
13:53We also do have news from Austria.
13:56The Austrian government plans 1 billion funder fund
13:58for startups.
13:59For startups, Austria will launch a 1 billion funder funds
14:03to stipulate VC investments
14:05and support innovation-led startups and spin-offs.
14:10The public-private initiative is expected
14:12to bolster Austria's competitiveness.
14:15Chris, I hand it over to you.
14:17Yeah.
14:18And when we're looking at the German ecosystem this month,
14:21I think it's really an interesting
14:24and rather complex impression that we're getting
14:27because we are always talking here
14:29about the EFU Business Climate Index,
14:30which is a poll among German companies
14:35about how they are thinking
14:36that business is going to develop.
14:39Right now, obviously, everything is very heavily influenced
14:42by what's going on with the American tariffs
14:44and with President Trump.
14:46But we see that the German EFU Business Climate Index
14:50actually increased in April, in May,
14:53from 86.9 to 87.5 points,
14:59signaling a cautious rebound, one could say,
15:02in the economic sentiment.
15:06And, yeah, it's actually one of,
15:10and it's actually an improvement,
15:12the fourth or fifth improvement in a row.
15:15So that is very interesting.
15:18Nevertheless, we also,
15:20and that is like the contradictory information about it,
15:23we also get numbers that the German economy
15:26might have grown by 0.4% in the first quarter,
15:31twice the initial estimate.
15:33But we also had a consultant group
15:38of the German government called die Wirtschaftswaisen.
15:40So like the, how do you say this?
15:43The saviors, saviors of the economy.
15:46The council of economic wise men,
15:49maybe a literal translation.
15:51Yeah, of economic wise men, yeah.
15:53The economic savants,
15:55which also include women, fortunately.
15:59So they actually said that
16:02their expectation for 2025 is actually 0.0%.
16:06So it's complete stagnation,
16:08which caused rather troublesome coverage in Germany.
16:17And last but not least from the ecosystem,
16:20the D-Hub report,
16:23Startup Gründerin Ostdeutsch,
16:26meaning startup founder, female founder,
16:30East German,
16:31indicates that female founders in Eastern Germany
16:34face dual disadvantages.
16:36They face structural weaknesses
16:38in accessing venture capital
16:39and a general gender investment gap,
16:41but they are more successful in Eastern Germany.
16:44So yeah, that I think was an interesting report
16:48for us to look into
16:49if you want to get a more in-depth perspective
16:53on startups in those five German states.
16:59Moving on to general news,
17:01tech news, company news,
17:03and our section about VC news and new funds,
17:07in case any one of you is looking for money.
17:09As always, a reminder,
17:11this is only a small selection,
17:13but let me rattle off some of the new funds
17:15that we were learning about the last month.
17:18Berlin-based VC firm Luna Ventures
17:20has launched its second fund,
17:23raising 50 million euros
17:24to invest in pre-seed deep tech startups,
17:27a fund aiming to support technical founders
17:29solving essential problems
17:31with their headquarters in Berlin.
17:35Adam Street Partners raised 270 million euros
17:38for a new fund targeting next generation healthcare
17:40and tech companies across Europe
17:42from early stage to growth investments,
17:45their headquarters in Chicago.
17:47Bosch Ventures,
17:49Bosch, the automotive supplier
17:51that is also in household items,
17:53has committed 270 million euros
17:55to American deep tech startups,
17:58including AI and quantum computing firms
18:00to enhance global innovation access.
18:02They are based in Stuttgart.
18:05Insight Partners showcased
18:06its 2025 German portfolio,
18:09including B2B software as a service,
18:11e-commerce, and fintech startups,
18:13backed by its scale-up expertise
18:14by deutsche startups.
18:16And Final Frontier launches
18:20a new AI-powered defense tech fund,
18:24backed by former NATO Secretary Anders Falk Rasmussen.
18:27The fund focuses on dual-use AI innovations
18:30in aerospace security and national defense.
18:35That's it for the VC news.
18:37Green tech news.
18:39Swiss carbon capture company Climeworks
18:41is cutting over 10% of its workforce
18:44due to underperformance
18:45at its direct air capture plans.
18:48They have a flagship mammoth plant in Iceland,
18:51which just captured 750 tons of CO carbon dioxide
18:57versus a 36,000-ton target.
19:02So it's a bit troubling.
19:06And I mean,
19:07it's an always ongoing discussion
19:08in the climate field,
19:11whether technological advances in the field,
19:16sorry,
19:16whether technological advances in the field
19:19will be able to keep up with the speed
19:22in which we are destroying the earth.
19:26And in terms of AI news,
19:28we were already talking about
19:30Paul Loa being a unicorn.
19:32Biotech news,
19:33we already talked about CureVac,
19:34but that brings us to fintech news.
19:36And there you have some more stuff going on.
19:41Yes,
19:41we already talked about in our April news
19:43that they have been trading disruptions.
19:46BaFin,
19:47the German financial watchdog,
19:49warns banks and brokers
19:51after April trading disruption.
19:53Germany's financial regulator,
19:55BaFin,
19:55has issued warnings to banks and brokers
19:57following significant trading disruptions.
20:00In April,
20:01the regulator emphasized
20:02the need for robust systems
20:05to ensure market stability
20:07and protect investors.
20:09Trade Republic also faces criticism
20:12over customer service issues.
20:15They are under scrutiny
20:16due to customer complaints
20:18about prolonged account issues
20:21and inadequate support.
20:25One user reported being locked out
20:27of the account for seven weeks
20:29without resolution.
20:31Seven weeks is quite long.
20:32And our never-ending story,
20:34wirecard scandal.
20:35Right now,
20:36Commerce Bank and EY
20:37clash over the wirecard scandal.
20:40They're in a legal dispute
20:42and a bank,
20:43Commerce Bank,
20:44seeks compensation for damages
20:46incurred due to EY's
20:49alleged audit failures.
20:52Vivid,
20:52a new bank,
20:53they receive a Mika license
20:55to expand regulated crypto services
20:58in the EU.
20:59They're based in Berlin
21:00and they get a Mika,
21:02Markets and Crypto Assets License,
21:04allowing it to offer
21:05fully regulated crypto products
21:07in Germany,
21:08France,
21:08and beyond
21:09from July 2025 on.
21:12Let's go a little bit
21:13into the general news.
21:15Votocoppler delays passenger flights
21:17due to certification issue.
21:21Feinpreneur highlights
21:22importance of micro-founders
21:24in Germany.
21:25And JetSea completes
21:27first commercial drone delivery
21:29in Germany,
21:30a Swiss drone logistics startup.
21:32They have concluded
21:33Germany's first approved
21:35commercial drone delivery.
21:37GoStudent,
21:38you remember the Austrian unicorn
21:40that was
21:42EdTech,
21:44which was pretty good,
21:45pretty big
21:46in online tutoring
21:47and still is.
21:49They now also launch
21:50an offline franchise model.
21:52Aurora Tech
21:54and Spire Global
21:55launch a satellite
21:56constellation
21:57for wildfire monitoring
21:59and,
21:59how to pronounce this,
22:02MSFin
22:04recovers
22:08$5 million in losses
22:09from illegal
22:10online gambling.
22:11The Vienna-based
22:12startup
22:13M&S Process
22:14Finanzierung,
22:15MSFin,
22:16has developed
22:17a unique
22:18business model
22:19specializing
22:20and reclaiming losses
22:21from illegal
22:22online gambling.
22:24In Austria,
22:24where gambling
22:25is a state monopoly,
22:26many international
22:27providers operate
22:28without valid licenses.
22:30MSFin

22:32in legal
22:33recovering their losses

22:37And then we do have

22:47The Exploration Company.

23:39Chris,
23:40usually you are
23:41a good news guy,
23:42but you want to
23:42take on the bad news
23:43today as well?
23:44Yes,
23:45let's do it.
23:46So,
23:47let's talk about
23:48the creative
23:49destruction part
23:50of our
23:51podcast today.
23:53So,
23:53what probably
23:54didn't go so well
23:55in the last couple
23:55of weeks
23:56in the German,
23:57Swiss,
23:58and Austrian
23:59entrepreneurship world,
24:00we,
24:01for example,
24:02saw that
24:02German biotech
24:03firm Medellin
24:04has filed
24:05for insolvency
24:06following failed
24:06partnerships
24:07and drying
24:08capital.
24:10Basically,
24:11a decision
24:11that underscores
24:12the ongoing
24:13turbulence
24:14in the European
24:14biotech
24:15funding landscape.
24:17Same goes
24:17for the
24:18health tech
24:19startup
24:19Dr. Lee,
24:20which was once
24:21hailed as
24:22the future
24:22of digital
24:23patient management.
24:24They have
24:25filed for
24:25insolvency
24:26amid financial
24:27pressures
24:27and slow
24:28adoption
24:28in the
24:28German
24:29healthcare
24:29system.
24:30I guess,
24:31in general,
24:32a market
24:32that is
24:33very slow
24:34and not
24:35very great
24:36at adopting
24:36change.
24:38German
24:38battery
24:38innovator
24:39CustomSelt,
24:40known for
24:40supplying
24:41electric
24:41aviation
24:42projects,
24:43has filed
24:43for
24:44insolvency
24:44amid
24:44financial
24:45pressures
24:46in the

25:03But
25:04let's
25:05end
25:05on a
25:05high
25:06note
25:06or
25:06on
25:06several

25:13As always,
25:14this is just
25:14a small
25:15selection
25:15showing how
25:18resilient
25:18the market
25:19and the

29:16to close

29:19Always.
29:20So,
29:21this time
29:22around,
29:22we found
29:23a delightful
29:24nod to
29:24nostalgia
29:25because the
29:26players of
29:27Bayern Munich
29:28recreated an
29:29iconic childhood
29:30photo of
29:31club legend
29:32Thomas Müller,
29:33a player
29:35whose career
29:36with Bayern
29:36Munich
29:37draws to a
29:38close.
29:39And so,
29:39his teammates
29:39paid tribute
29:40by emulating
29:41a photo of
29:41young Müller
29:42in his
29:42bedroom,
29:43adorned
29:44with FC
29:44Bayern
29:45memorabilia.
29:47And we
29:48just thought
29:48it looked
29:49cute.
29:50It was
29:50like a
29:51heartfelt
29:51gesture.
29:52And Thomas
29:53Müller,
29:53yeah,
29:54probably one
29:55of the
29:56biggest
29:56German
29:58soccer
29:58player of
29:59the past
29:59two or

30:09loved it.
