00:00Welcome to StartupRed.io, your podcast and YouTube blog covering the German startup scene with news, interviews and live events.
00:17Hello and welcome, everybody. This is Joe from StartupRed.io. You are listening to This Month in German, Swiss and Austrian Startups June 2025 together with Chris. Hey, how are you doing?
00:32Hey, I'm good.
00:34Awesome. Chris is, as always, joining us from New York City and I'm in Frankfurt. Welcome to our regular startup news from the startup at Tech Entrepreneurship Scenes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
00:46We are recording this on the 30th of June. As always, all news not included will be part of our news wrap up.
00:55This time, the summer wrap up to be published on September 1st, where we're wrapping up July and most of August.
01:03Our news is taking summer break in July and August, and then we will be back with regular news from September on.
01:10We needed to cut, again, our news very, very seriously.
01:15We had like 17 pages of raw news, and that would have been something for like an hour.
01:23Everything, as always, you can find on our blog, celebrate.io forward slash blog, all the sources where you can dig in.
01:30Quite a lot of news pieces have several news source links.
01:37Chris, are you going to celebrate Independence Day the day after this publication?
01:42Yes, I will be celebrating with friends who always rent out a hotel room in order to have a better view at the fireworks in New York.
01:52Where are the fireworks taking place?
01:56This year on the East River, and it's really big, and then we all sneak into a tiny room.
02:02We have drinks in the bathtub and some food, and it's usually like 10 to 12 people.
02:08It's super fun.
02:10Sounds good.
02:11Let's go to our highlights.
02:13That's June 2025 catapulted the dark startup scene into new heights, headlined by headlines by Germany's Ascension as a powerhouse in defense tech and deep tech.
02:25Berlin and Munich-based Helsing became Germany's most valuable startup, surpassing Salonis with a 600 million Series C funding,
02:35led by Daniel X Primera Matera, if the name Daniel X sounds familiar.
02:45He's one of the founders of Spotify, cementing its position as the country's second Decatur corn and overtaking Salonis in the process.
02:56Simultaneously, Munich's ESA Aerospace joined the Unicorn Club, raising $150 million via convertible bonds to fuel its commercial space launch operations,
03:07with growing geopolitical demand for sovereign satellite capabilities across Europe.
03:13Meanwhile, Berlin-based stealth mode health tech LunarCare quietly entered Unicorn territory with over 30 million users.
03:21FDA-approved phototherapy solutions, highlighting Berlin's rising cloud in media innovation, in medical innovation.
03:31And by the name, guys, by the way, guys, for LumaCare, we really had to dig deep to find this.
03:38Infrastructure and fintech also took center stage.
03:41Hamburg's Impossible Cloud, a decentralized Web3-enabled enterprise cloud platform,
03:48reached a $470 million valuation as strategic injection from NGP Capital,
03:59further validating Europe's ambition to develop hyperscaler alternatives.
04:05Munich's headquartered Scalable Capital closed the record $155 million Series E round,
04:14aiming to become the Charles Schwab of Europe with ETF investing, crypto access, and AI-powered wealth management tools.
04:22In biotech, ITM Isotope Technologies Munich SE secured a mammoth €262.5 million in non-dilutive debt financing
04:34from Blue Owl Capital to scale its radio-pharmaceutical pipeline
04:39and prep for FDA submission of ITM 11, its GEP net cancer therapy.
04:47These mega-runs deals confirm investors' appetite for infrastructure layer innovation,
04:53vertical SaaS, and frontier health tech.
04:56Policy and ecosystem moves rounded out the month.
05:00With a long-awaited release of the EU Startup and Scale-Up Strategy,
05:04dubbed Choose Europe to Start and Scale,
05:06the blueprint includes a $10 billion scale-up Europe fund,
05:11a unified 28th regime for legal harmonization,
05:16and Lab2Unicorn initiative to bridge research and commercialization.
05:21All key steps in making the EU globally competitive for tech founders.
05:27Regionally, Switzerland's $100 billion deep tech vision,
05:31new reports on DACH CEE climate tech,
05:34and Germany's improved IFO Business Climate Index,
05:38pointed to a cautious optimism despite capital concentration pressure.
05:43From rising unicorns like Helsing to smart policy bets
05:47and decentralized infrastructure champions like Impossible Cloud,
05:52Startup Radio remains your go-to source for what's next in DACH innovation funding
05:56and founder momentum.
05:58So let's talk startups.
06:02As we said, this news piece will go live Thursday, July 3rd, 2025.
06:07You can listen to it on our radio station,
06:10and we will be back after a short ad break with Chris with the top news.
06:14So let's pay some more attention to a couple of the top news of this month.
06:25Some of it you had already mentioned.
06:28First up, there's three new unicorns in these news,
06:33and one is even a DECACORN.
06:36So Helsing is Germany's second DECACORN and now Germany's most valuable startup.
06:44The German defense tech sector sees a breakout moment as Helsing surpasses Celonis in valuation.
06:53It is a pretty remarkable development because now we see that Germany's startup landscape has a new champion.
06:59So the AI-driven defense startup Helsing has closed a monumental €600 million CUC funding,
07:07propelling its valuation to a staggering $12 billion and dethroning Celonis as the country's most valuable privately held tech company.
07:17The raise, as you mentioned, led by Spotify co-founder Daniel X,
07:21investments from Prima Materia marks a pivotal shift in European venture capital
07:25from software as a service and fintech towards dual-use deep tech innovation.
07:31It's only the second German DECACORN,
07:33and Helsing reflects growing investor appetite for sovereign AI and next-generation defense technologies.
07:43The company is based in Berlin and Munich
07:45and develops real-time AI software for battlefield situational awareness,
07:51integrating sensor fusion and drone autonomy,
07:53a model gaining traction among heightened geopolitical instability.
07:58Probably you've heard that a lot of countries,
08:01especially the NATO countries,
08:02are discussing increasing their funding for military operations.
08:10So this right now seems to be well within this trend.
08:14And the funding round cements Helsing's status as Europe's premier defense unicorn
08:19with strategic partnerships in place,
08:21including Rheinmetall and a pending acquisition of Grob aircraft,
08:25signaling a full-stack expansion into AI-powered aerospace systems.
08:32So, ISA Aerospace, again related in the same field,
08:40reaches the unicorn orbit with 150 million euros in a convertible raise.
08:44Germany's private space race gains momentum here.
08:49They had a 150 million euro convertible bond raise,
08:55positioning the Munich-based rocket startup among the elite of Europe's burgeoning commercial space sector.
09:01Founding in 2018 as a private launch services provider,
09:05ISA Aerospace now has rapidly ascended from a sunicorn to a unicorn,
09:10capitalizing on rising geopolitical demand for sovereign launch capabilities
09:15and satellite deployment independence.
09:17Funding round confirmed by German business media
09:20fuels the company's ambitions to rival SpaceX,
09:24Arianespace and Arianespace by offering flexible,
09:27coast-efficient orbital delivery from European soil.
09:31The fresh capital will be used to accelerate its Spectrum rocket program,
09:36set to deliver small and medium payloads to low Earth orbit, LEO,
09:41amid mounting demand from defense, climate monitoring and telecommunications clients.
09:48Yeah, also this milestone comes as Germany doubles down on space tech autonomy,
09:52placing the country at the forefront of a new industrial frontier
09:55with major ESA contracts, so that's the European Space Agency,
10:00already secured and the new valuation crossing the billion euro mark.
10:04ESA Aerospace exemplifies the resurgence of European new space competitiveness.
10:11And you also already mentioned that the Berlin-based health tech startup LumaCare
10:17has very discreetly entered the unicorn club,
10:20achieving a valuation exceeding 1 billion euros
10:23following its Series D funding round.
10:26Despite amassing over 30 million euros users,
10:30LumaCare has maintained a low profile,
10:32focusing on delivering innovative phototherapy solutions.
10:37They have a flagship product called the LumaCare LC122M LAMP,
10:42a versatile, non-invasive treatment platform for conditions,
10:47ranging from dermatological issues to oncology,
10:50utilizing photodynamic therapy called PDT and phototherapeutic protocols.
10:58The company has CEMDD and FDA approvals,
11:03and therefore LumaCare's technology is gaining traction
11:06in both clinical and research settings
11:08in a field that has a growing demand
11:11for cost-effective and flexible medical treatments.
11:14Also here, we can see, since they are based in Berlin,
11:19that the European health tech sector is expanding,
11:22and Berlin is becoming more of a hub for medical innovation there.
11:28And Hamburg-based Impossible Cloud has reached a 470 million euro valuation
11:33following a strategic investment from NGP Capital,
11:36signaling growing institutional confidence
11:38in decentralized infrastructure solutions.
11:40Chris, does this sound for you very much like SuniCoin as well?
11:46Yeah, yeah.
11:48But yeah, so I mean 470 million, yeah.
11:52Because I mean numbers, do they matter these days anymore?
11:56Who knows? Up is down.
11:59The startup which operates a blockchain-powered cloud storage platform
12:03tailored to enterprise use
12:05is positioning itself as a European answer to hyperscalers
12:09like AWS from Amazon, Google Cloud, and Azure.
12:13By combining Web3 architecture with enterprise-grade compliance
12:16and performance,
12:17Impossible Cloud is tapping into the surging demand
12:20for very sovereign and distributed data services
12:22across the EU and beyond.
12:25NGP Capital's investment underscores
12:27larger capital reallocation trend
12:29toward infrastructure-layer startups
12:31that blend decentralization with real-world utility.
12:37We also see that this move reinforces themes
12:41from our recent interview with NGP Capital
12:44on VC investment patterns in the Dach region
12:47where the rise of vertical SaaS and frontier tech,
12:49including cloud, AI, cybersecurity,
12:52is reshaping Europe's venture landscape.
12:56Three more to go, people.
12:58Bear with me.
12:59Munich-based ITM Isotope Technologies
13:01has locked up to 262.5 million euros
13:08in non-dilutive debt financing from funds
13:11managed by Blue Old Capital,
13:13marking one of the largest capital raises
13:15in European biotech this year.
13:17The financing, led by Blue Old's credit platform,
13:20provides an immediate $140 million
13:22trench to advance the U.S. regulatory submission
13:27and commercial readiness of ITM-11,
13:30the company's lead radiopharmaceutical candidate
13:33for treating gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors,
13:40GEPNETs.
13:44JEPNETs.
13:45I think they, JEPNETs,
13:46that sounds more like something you want to fight.
13:50With promising phase three clinical trial results
13:53and a 2025 FDA filing plant,
13:56ITM is emerging as a dominant player
13:57in targeted radiotherapeutics.
14:00The deal also supports the scale-up
14:02of actinium-225 isotope production via actinier,
14:07ITM's joint venture,
14:09reinforcing Germany's leadership
14:10in next-generation cancer therapies.
14:12So we see here that we are in an era
14:15where biotech startups often face equity dilution.
14:19ITM's non-dilutive structure is standing out,
14:23signaling deep investor confidence
14:24in late-stage nuclear medicine innovation.
14:30A very dynamic market as of now,
14:33especially given the developments in the U.S.
14:38So we will see how it goes for European companies here.
14:43And the European Commission has officially launched
14:45its comprehensive EU startup and scale-up strategy
14:48titled Choose Europe to Start and Scale,
14:53aiming to transform the European Union
14:55into a global hub for technology-driven companies.
14:58The strategy addresses longstanding challenges
15:01faced by startups and scale-ups,
15:02including fragmented regulations,
15:04limited access to finance,
15:06talent shortages and key initiatives
15:08now include the introduction of a 28th regime
15:12to harmonize insolvency, labor and tax laws.
15:1828th regime here referring to the fact
15:21that the European Union has 27 membership countries
15:24and therefore 27 secretaries
15:28because each country needs to have one secretary
15:30or commissioner in the European Commission.
15:33also the establishment of a 10 billion scale-up Europe fund
15:38to support deep tech companies
15:40and the blue carpet initiative
15:41to attract and retain top talent.
15:44The strategy also emphasizes faster market uptake
15:47through the Lab2 Unicorn program,
15:49facilitating the transition from research
15:51to commercialization.
15:54This whole development aligns with our earlier report
15:57in February,
15:58in which we anticipated the release
15:59of the strategy in the summer.
16:01For more details,
16:02you can refer to our February coverage
16:05where we had the DACH startup scene,
16:07a February roundup.
16:09And there we are talking a bit more about that.
16:11And last but not least,
16:13Munich-based fintech scalable capital
16:15has secured 155 million euros
16:17in its largest funding round to date,
16:20led by Belgium investment firm
16:21Zofina and the pan-European growth equity investor
16:24Notteo's partners.
16:26This series E round brings the total capital
16:28raised by scalable capital to over 470 million euros.
16:33Fresh funding will support the expansion
16:35of scalable digital investment platform across Europe
16:38with a focus on markets like France and Italy.
16:41The company wants to grow its assets under management
16:44from 30 billion euros right now
16:45to over 100 billion euros
16:47within the next two to three years,
16:49positioning themselves,
16:50you already said it,
16:51as the Charles Schwab of Europe.
16:54Scalable capital offers
16:55a suite of investment products,
16:57including ETFs, stocks, bonds,
16:59cryptocurrencies, private equity,
17:02through its scalable broker
17:04and scalable wealth services.
17:06The platform also plans
17:07to introduce new features
17:08such as children's investments,
17:11accounts,
17:11and enhance AI-driven
17:13portfolio management tools.
17:15Co-founder and co-CEO
17:18Erik Pottsuweid
17:19emphasized that the funding round
17:20is a significant step
17:21toward becoming Europe's
17:24leading retail investment platform.
17:28And now we are done
17:29with taking some time
17:30for the real big stories,
17:33a bit of housekeeping,
17:34and then we can look at the ecosystem.
17:38Actually, I don't have a lot for housekeeping.
17:41I was just checking the monthly wrap-up
17:43we get from...
17:44Because we got our house in order.
17:46That's why.
17:46We got our house in order.
17:47We scored in the last 30 days
17:51in more than 30 countries
17:53in the world,
17:55in some of them,
17:56in multiple podcast charts.

18:04You can subscribe
18:05and follow on our link tree.
18:07And now we are already
18:08onto the ecosystem.
18:09First, have a look at Europe.
18:13One trillion euro fund,
18:15Power Walk and Northern Gridstone
18:17team up on a new UK-based EIS fund,
18:21Ambition.
18:22Europe's first trillion euro startups,
18:25source EU startups.
18:27EIF, Defense Tech Fund,
18:29European Investment Fund,
18:30launches its first defense tech initiative,
18:33part of a growing strategic investment wave.
18:38DACH CE Climate Tech report highlights
18:41the fastest growing climate tech startups
18:43across DACH and Central,
18:46Eastern and Eastern Europe in 2025.
18:49EU AI Act enforcement timelines.
18:52The European Commission confirms
18:54phased enforcement of AI Act
18:57begins in Q3 2025.
19:00Fines expected in 2026.
19:03Now, let's talk a little bit about Germany.
19:05And there, I hand it back over to Chris,
19:07who is usually the guy for Germany.
19:10Yeah.
19:10And so interesting how different governments
19:13are trying to rein in
19:14some of the AI companies.
19:17It's also always part here
19:19of the discussions in the US
19:20in the finance packaging.
19:22And there's even discussion
19:23whether if some states
19:25individually in the US
19:26try to regulate AI,
19:28whether they are
19:29receiving government funding
19:32or whether the federal government
19:33stops giving them money.
19:35Moving on to Germany, though,
19:36you already said it.
19:37We always look at the IFO index,
19:41which is a business climate index
19:43based on a survey.
19:45And we see that it increases
19:47for the sixth straight month
19:49driven by optimism
19:50in manufacturing and services.
19:53Ten VCs are actively investing
19:55millions into German startups
19:57across sectors like AI,
19:58fintech and SaaS.
20:00A bullish signal
20:01for the local ecosystem
20:02writes Deutsche Startups.
20:04We have now a federal minister
20:06on startup.
20:08It's part of the new government here.
20:10The first public appearance
20:11of Germany's startup minister
20:13highlights a vision-driven approach
20:14to supporting founders.
20:16Business Insider writes
20:17a bit more about this.
20:19Then when we look
20:21at digital wallets,
20:23that secretary
20:24that I was just talking about,
20:26Wildberger,
20:27he outlined aggressive goals
20:29for nationwide wallet infrastructure
20:31and startup partnerships.
20:32More about that
20:33in Handelsblatt.
20:34Die Kreditanstatt für Wiederbauaufbau,
20:37KFW,
20:38has some new startup insights.
20:41Their latest research highlights
20:43increased German startup activity
20:44despite macro headwinds.
20:47And Germany's new chancellor,
20:49Friedrich Merz,
20:50criticized for calling himself
20:52Plan B
20:53for a digital minister.
20:55He raises concerns
20:56over tech policy expertises.
20:59So, yeah,
20:59we see that the,
21:01that this whole new secretary
21:03or this new ministry
21:04is kind of,
21:06has still like,
21:07some like growth pain,
21:08growing pain to do.
21:09German Entrepreneurship
21:12Org
21:13and IFO
21:14Institute
21:15call for stronger
21:16government support
21:17to unlock startup growth.
21:20We have a deep dive
21:21into capital concentration
21:22in Germany's VC landscape
21:24at Deutsche Startups,
21:27asking who still gets funding
21:28in 2025.
21:29And Bitcoin,
21:30the German Tech Association,
21:32says founders
21:33are optimistic
21:34about the new federal government
21:35stance on innovation
21:36in capital markets.
21:37And in the fight
21:39between the two capitals
21:41or metropolises
21:42of Berlin and Munich,
21:45we have a new analysis
21:47that reveals Berlin
21:48is a home to 60%
21:49of Germany's unicorns,
21:51but Munich is catching up
21:53in B2B SaaS.
21:55And moving on to Austria,
21:58there we see that
21:59Austria's tech fund
22:00Fonds Zukunft Österreich
22:02is going to disperse
22:04140 million euros
22:05in 2026,
22:06though only
22:0750 million euros
22:09has been reserved
22:10to date.
22:11So,
22:12if you intend
22:13to move to Salzburg,
22:15there's money.
22:17And in Switzerland,
22:19we have a
22:19deep tech report there
22:21and a new Swiss report
22:22is showing that
22:23deep tech startup
22:23creation
22:24rises in
22:26medtech,
22:26AI,
22:27and robotics.
22:30Related to that,
22:31there's a
22:31deep tech
22:32100 billion
22:34euro vision
22:36New Insights
22:37position Switzerland
22:38as Europe's
22:39100 billion euro
22:40deep tech
22:40innovation engine
22:42driven by
22:43public-private
22:43research and
22:44development,
22:45writes TechEU.
22:46And Swiss Angel
22:47investor Peter Kessel
22:48is named
22:49Business Angel
22:50of the Year
22:512025.
22:53Congratulations,
