00:00This is the OW sound, as in the words about, OUT and GROUND.
00:13OW is a diphthong sound, which means it is a combination of two vowel sounds that are
00:19pronounced within the same syllable.
00:22The OW sound is a combination of the A sound and the OO sound.
00:34Like the vowels, diphthongs are all made through the mouth and they are voiced, which means
00:38you vibrate your vocal cords to make the sound.
00:42But unlike vowels and the consonants, when you pronounce a diphthong sound, your mouth
00:48will change position and shape as you say the sound, because they are a combination
00:53of two sounds.
00:55So, as you say the OW sound, your mouth will start on the position of the A or R sound,
01:05and then you allow your mouth and lips to close as you finish on the position of the OO sound.
01:13One of the most difficult things about learning English is the spelling.
01:25This is because spelling is often not phonetic, and this is especially true with vowels and
01:29diphthongs.
01:30So, you will find this sound spelled in many different ways, but it is often spelled with
01:37with the letters O, O-W or O-U like the words town, down, our and without.
01:52So here are some more examples, this time with the OW sound in the middle.
01:58Now, here are some more examples, with the OW sound at the end.
02:16So, that's it for the OW sound.
