00:00This is the K sound.
00:03Keep watching to find out how it's pronounced in British English.
00:10Hi everybody and welcome back to Lean English.
00:17I'm Ed and I'm here to help you achieve your pronunciation goals.
00:22Before we start, remember to like this video if you find it useful and subscribe for more
00:27British English pronunciation lessons in the future.
00:32Now let's look at the K sound in a bit more detail.
00:38Do you remember the G sound which we looked at a couple of weeks ago?
00:43The K sound is produced in a similar way, so first produce the G sound.
00:51Now do it again, but this time whisper it.
00:55K.
00:56K.
00:59Well done!
01:00You just produced the K sound.
01:04This sound is produced by building up air pressure between the tongue and the back of the mouth
01:10and releasing it explosively.
01:13But in contrast to the G sound, we don't use our voice.
01:18The back of the mouth is called the velum and this gives the sound its technical name,
01:24the voiceless vela plosive.
01:27Obviously, in real conversation we don't produce the G sound first, but you can use this trick
01:35to find the correct mouth position.
01:38So try and remember the mouth position and produce the sound again.
01:43K.
01:44K.
01:45K.
01:46K.
01:47Now, look at these words.
01:50Can you identify the K sound?
01:54Listen and see if you can hear it.
01:58Care.
01:59Kiss.
02:00Occur.
02:01Knee.
02:02Key.
02:03Ake.
02:04Next.
02:05Luck.
02:06The K sound is usually spelt with the letters C or K, but it can also be spelt with the letters
02:26X or Q in some words.
02:29Be careful because the letter K doesn't always produce the K sound and it may be silent in
02:36some words such as knee.
02:39The letter K is usually silent when it appears before the letter N at the beginning of words
02:45such as knife, know, knight, knock.
02:57Now let's practice.
02:59Listen and repeat after me.
03:02Bare knuckle boxing.
03:09An excellent technique.
03:15A cure for stomach ache.
03:22The taxi got a parking ticket.
03:29The accountant counts quickly.
03:36The K sound is part of a group of sounds called stops, which all produce sound by blocking
03:42and releasing air in the mouth.
03:45English has six stop sounds.
03:48K.
03:49G.
03:50T.
03:51D.
03:52P.
03:53And B.
03:55When two stop sounds come together, they overlap, which means the first sound isn't released
04:01and it blends with the second sound in words and phrases such as cocktail, blackboard,
04:13backdoor, stop calling.
04:19This makes words and phrases easier to pronounce and helps our speech to flow more smoothly.
04:26So avoid releasing the first stop in stop sequences.
04:32Well that's the end of the lesson, but now it's your turn.
04:36Can you think of any more words that contain the silent letter K?
04:40Let me know in the comments below and remember to like and subscribe for more videos in the
04:45future.
04:47Thanks for watching, goodbye.
