ENG vs IND, 4th Test: Speaking to the reporters before the Manchester Test, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said that losing wickets in clusters haven't helped India in the ongoing Test series against England.
Transcript
00:00Yeah, he took a ball while he was bowling there and tried to stop him.
00:04It's just a cut, so we have to see how bad the cut is.
00:07Obviously, the medical team will take him off to see a doctor.
00:10And obviously, if he needs stitches or doesn't need stitches,
00:12it's going to be important to our planning for the next few days.
00:15Ryan, this course has been a long road and there's been a lot of talk about Bugha's workload.
00:22But going forward, you want to check on Siraj's workload as well.
00:28So how do you think he's coping up with leading the attack?
00:32How do you look at it?
00:34The first thing I'll say is it hasn't felt like a long tour.
00:37It's been exciting from day one, like you get up every morning and you can't wait for what the next day brings.
00:41And obviously, these guys are working so hard, especially the guys who are new to the squad.
00:45So it's been a very refreshing tour in that sense.
00:47Let's first start with Siraj before we talk about Bums.
00:51I think we sort of take for granted our lucky we are to have someone like that.
00:56I know he doesn't always have the returns that you expect from a fast bowler.
01:01But in terms of heart, he's like a lion and what he brings to this bowling attack.
01:05Whenever he does have the ball in hand, you always feel like something's going to happen.
01:08He's not someone who's going to shy away from workload.
01:11So it makes it even more important for us to manage his workload and make sure that he's at least fit to give his best.
01:18And again, we'll take a call on the combination we play.
01:21Particularly given the Archdeep situation as well, we'll make that call closer to Manchester.
01:26Ryan, considering the conditions in Manchester, do you think those conditions might just suit the Indian fast bowlers or the Indian players?
01:39I mean, it could. Also, I'm not sure Manchester is the same as Manchester of 10, 15 years ago.
01:46But look, we don't look for excuses and conditions. We're playing on the same wickets as the other team.
01:52And I think we've made it a point within the group to stay away from any excuses.
01:57And the guys have been really good at that. So the challenge is to get the best out of the players, to look at the conditions we expect.
02:02You know, try to fit the pieces of who we can play in that and just ask the guys to go out there and do their best,
02:09like I feel they've done for large parts of the series so far.
02:12Ryan, firstly, Gaurav Shubhan said the other day that Rishaps should be fine for Manchester.
02:19What's the process of him coming back in the sense like, what is he keeping back today obviously?
02:25He's taken so that impact is there. Can you give an idea about when he starts completely training, fully training again?
02:34He will bat in Manchester before the test. Look, I don't think he's going to keep Rishaps out of the test no matter what.
02:40He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third test and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger.
02:45And keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep.
02:50We don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through innings.
02:54But yeah, he rested today. We're just trying to give the finger as long as possible and hopefully he's good to go in Manchester on the first training session.
03:00So what you're saying is, Gaurav is also going to be in the equation?
03:02He is in the equation, but I mean obviously Rishaps but he plays the next test and does both.
03:09One question. India have come so close to winning and being in winning positions and they've lost the grip just when it mattered.
03:18When that happens more than once, obviously for the coaches it's like you have to kind of find ways to ensure that this player doesn't go away.
03:27How do you think, like, how are you addressing that?
03:30I think the focus is to not try to change too much and that might be counting intuitive when you're 2-1 down in the series.
03:36But we feel like the guys have been excellent for large, large parts of the series.
03:39The repetition of losing lots of wickets in a very short space of time has obviously been the key feature of the two losses.
03:46Probably both times in Headingley and obviously overnight and first thing in the morning at Lourdes.
03:51We feel cost us the game, you know, losing six wickets or 40 again.
03:55But, you know, if you look at it individually, if you look at the run tally of all the batters, they're all batting nicely.
04:00You know, even someone like Curran, we feel his rhythm is good, his tempo is good.
04:04We want more runs from the three, but the message is mainly, you know, let's really focus on what we've done well
04:09and tidy up the little things that have cost us results, essentially.
04:14Coach, no ambiguity on Boomer playing?
04:18No, we'll make that call in Manchester still.
04:21You know, we know we've got him for one of the last two tests.
04:24I think it's pretty obvious the series on the line line in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him.
04:29But again, we've got to look at all the factors, you know, how many days of cricket are we going to get up there,
04:33what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game and then how that fits in together with the Oval
04:38and looking at the last two games realistically as part of the series.
04:41And your thoughts on workload management vis-a-vis what Ben Stokes did on day five.
04:46As a team, did you take note of that and just overall your thoughts on workload management, if it's overrated at any point?
04:52Look, that was super impressive for Ben to come out in the last day and bowl the amount of overs he did with the intensity he did
04:58and obviously bats and fields as well.
05:01We're not sure to compare, you know, our bowlers to individuals from other teams.
05:05We have our own strengths. We know what particularly Jaspreet does in spells, in shorter spells, which is he prefers bowling in.
05:14And, you know, when the time's right and what I alluded to earlier about Siraj, some bowlers are like that.
05:19You get the best out of them in their seventh, eighth and ninth over.
05:22But not everyone has to be the same as that. And we feel that, you know, in consultation with Jaspreet, how we use him is the best way for the team.
05:29Coach, just touch upon the fact that you lost wickets in the heat, but also the fact that just at the breaks is when the wickets fell.
05:38Is this something that the batting group has spoken about?
05:41It has. You know, you've got to sort of weigh up. Is it more coincidence or is there a pattern of something we're doing wrong?
05:48Are we losing concentration? Are we getting too excited to get in there? You know, are we getting complacent in the positions we are?
05:53And that's very difficult to draw out a player. So it is something we're mentioning.
05:57There's been a few times we almost feel like it can't happen again.
06:01I was throwing balls at the back at Lords when Rishabh got run out and it was incredulity.
06:05You couldn't believe that it happened again.
06:07But that's also no guarantee that they're going to put on another, you know, 70, 80, 100 runs.
06:11You know, every ball is important.
06:13And I think the messaging to the players throughout has been like, let's try to win every single event,
06:18which is every ball, not look too far forward and not too far behind us either.
06:22Also to get the Mone bowl at Karun and Jaspreet, is that something to do with his height and the kind of bounce
06:29that even at this age that he provides for the batters to prepare?
06:32It's not a sort of direct sort of practice machine for Joffre I'm assuming you're alluding to.
06:41But obviously Arsh going away there after he cut his hand and Akash not bowling today.
06:46Sometimes we run a bit thin and if we think the practice is good for someone rolling off 20 yards
06:51and a bit taller and shaping the new ball, it is good practice for the batters.
06:55They obviously like competing against Mone as well.
06:57But it's mainly about getting the batters the best practice for the test match.
07:02Ryan, there's such a long tour, five test matches.
07:05How important it is as a coach to keep virtually everybody match fit and everybody since there are different kind of pitches
07:11it could be spinners one day, it could be.
07:13How important it is and the things that you do to keep everybody ready.
07:18I'm worried you guys keep referring to this as a long tour. Are you tired?
07:22It is a long tour.
07:24No, that's a great question. I mean particularly we're carrying A team which is a bit larger.
07:29So I guess it's giving as much attention and much care to the guys who aren't playing as they aren't playing.
07:35Making sure they get quality practice between tests.
07:38Talking to them about why we are going with the combinations we're not going with
07:42and hoping that they're in the right frame of mind and obviously physically and technically ready to play test cricket
07:47when their chance comes.
07:49Unfortunately when you have 18 quality players you're going to get guys coming on tour and not playing a test.
07:54But certainly managing that space and managing the team environment is very important to keeping everyone ready to play
08:00but also keeping the mood in the dressing room good.
08:04Fine, Coach.
08:05Coach, I've seen a lot of referees there and then plus Atkinson.
08:08So you know a lot of lacking depth as far as their bowlers are also pressing.
08:12So are we looking towards that also?
08:14Yeah, we're always up to speed with what they're doing.
08:18Obviously Bashir going out of the test and Dawson coming in.
08:21It hasn't been a series that's been dominated by spin so far as we kind of thought.
08:25Obviously why she bowled beautifully at Lourdes on the fourth afternoon there.
08:29But it just poses a slightly different challenge.
08:32I don't think it's any more easy or any more difficult.
08:34It's just different.
08:35And the players are obviously aware of that and we try to prep accordingly.
08:39You know, strength to strength coming in we don't feel it's much different
08:43and much the same when we put a team out.
08:45Even when you're leaving the number one bowler in the world out,
08:49the message is it's not who we put out there, it's what we put out there.
08:52These guys are all capable on both teams of being match winners in test cricket.
08:57So it's just a different challenge.
09:01Thank you guys.
