Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham, UK
Transcript
00:00Guys, session coach Ryan Chandrushkadi with us.
00:03As usual, we'll take one question at a time.
00:06We'll take questions from here first and then we'll move on.
00:09Why don't you go first here, please?
00:11Ryan, can you give some clarity on Kubra's availability for the game?
00:15Yeah, he's available for the game, obviously.
00:18We know from the start he's only going to play three out of the five.
00:20He's obviously had eight days to recover from the last test.
00:23But you know, given conditions and workload
00:26and how we think we can best manage for the next four games,
00:29we haven't made a call on that.
00:30We're going to see what the other guys are with their workload as well.
00:32So technically, yes, he's available.
00:34But we haven't made a decision on whether he's going to play or not yet.
00:37Hi, Coach.
00:38Coach, we saw a new look slipcord after the last game.
00:41Today at the practice, Mithish and Sai joining the fourth slip.
00:45You're just having a separate drill along with head coach and yourself.
00:49Can you describe what's the plan going on with the slipcord?
00:52Is it because of the last match or is it the team trying to do something?
00:56Look, I think we always want depth in the catching department.
00:59In England, you're always going to have four catches at some stage in the game.
01:02You know, Yashish V has been a very good catcher for us.
01:05We want to manage his confidence.
01:07There's also an argument for the short leg, you know,
01:10being a very important position, particularly if we are going to play two spinners.
01:13And we want to prep more guys in that position.
01:16So I think the more versatile we are as a fielding unit,
01:18the more guys who can do more jobs.
01:20And maybe just to give Yashish V a break from catching him in the gully for a little while.
01:23His hands are quite sore.
01:25We want to get his confidence back up.
01:27Ryan, can you tell about the wicket?
01:30You know, you guys have a long chat about it.
01:32And the second part of it is that are you surprised?
01:36Because KL said in the first match press conference that at the very last part of the test match,
01:41he thinks that, yes, we are playing in England.
01:44Before that, it was, you know, weather-wise quite subcontinent kind of conditions.
01:48So can you talk about it?
01:50Are you surprised the kind of wickets, the kind of weather here,
01:53and the kind of, you know, assistance the bowlers are getting from the wicket?
01:58I don't think the cleverest people in the world can tell you about the weather in England.
02:01It's very varied.
02:02But obviously the summers can be hot here,
02:04and the last four or five weeks has been incredibly hot.
02:07I also think England's style, the way they have played,
02:09it suits them to play on good wickets.
02:11So I'm not surprised that the wickets have been good so far.
02:13That surface there looks quite dry underneath.
02:15It looks like it's going to play well.
02:16It's got 11 miles on at the moment.
02:18But I see what KL means.
02:20You know, you come to England, you expect the ball to swing
02:22and seam all over the show.
02:23But that hasn't been the case in county cricket as well.
02:25The batch of balls is very dependent on how much the wicket does as well.
02:29And look, that Headingley wicket was a very good wicket.
02:32They got better and better,
02:33and we're kind of assuming the same from what we've seen at the first look of this wicket.
02:36Just one day to the game, you said that you haven't made up your mind yet as a group with regards to Bumrah.
02:43But how close or far is he from the game, and if there are any hindrances on that front?
02:48Like what's the discussion like with regards to Bumrah?
02:51Is the body not in the shape you want it to be,
02:53or do you want him to be preserved for probably the Lord's game?
02:57And second, is there a case for Kuldeep considering how hot it is there
03:01and how the county games have been built up to the test?
03:05Yeah, so with Bumrah, he is ready to play.
03:07So like I said in the very first question, it's how we manage these four tests.
03:12So if we feel like there's value in playing him in this test,
03:14we'll make that call at the very last minute.
03:16But I'm talking about how the pitch is going to play.
03:19Are we better off holding him back for Lord's and maybe Manchester or the Oval?
03:23So it's all those factors.
03:25But, you know, you've seen him train yesterday, he trained a little bit today.
03:28It's not like he's not fit to play.
03:30It's just trying to fit those puzzle pieces to get the most out of him,
03:34out of what we know we do have from him.
03:36And your question about Kuldeep, you know, we'd love to get him into the team.
03:41Playing two all-rounders in the last game, we're desperate.
03:46It would have been nice to have a spin in the last game.
03:48Also, we're trying to make the best assessment on what we see in front of us.
03:51So we know we're going to need three seamers in this game.
03:54And it's just how you manage that, you know, that 6-7-8 role.
03:57The guys are going to play that role and whether we can fit Kuldeep in now
04:00or again save him for later in the series where if the weather stays,
04:03like I said, it should turn somewhere along the line.
04:05You talked about the number 6-7-8.
04:08There has been a concern in the last test match.
04:12So considering that, how far is Nitesh ready from getting a game now?
04:18He's very close to getting a game.
04:31Obviously, he was fantastic in Australia, you know, coming into the team
04:34and playing the way he did.
04:36We just felt on balance for the last game.
04:38We wanted to go with the bowling all-rounder, which we thought Chodil was slightly ahead on the bowling front.
04:43We're looking at ways of rejigging the puzzle, yeah, so we can get a batting all-rounder in.
04:47And obviously, Nitesh is our premium batting all-rounder at the moment.
04:50So I would say it's a very good chance to play this test.
04:53Yeah, it's not a new contraption.
05:05All the ball manufacturers make those balls.
05:08We talk about detox and the bowlers just getting the very basics right.
05:11And that's the easiest way to give you an indication.
05:13You know, guys have come out of a long RPL season and the filthy habits of that cricket.
05:18We don't want that creeping into red ball cricket, into test cricket.
05:22So Mourne and the bowlers just use that tool just to make sure the basic fundamentals are in place.
05:26We've been using it for the last two weeks.
05:28It's not a new thing.
05:30How disappointing was how important is it to not make the nature of the actions
05:35and the sort of keep the play from what we started with?
05:38It's very important.
05:39I think for everyone, you know, you don't mind being totally outplayed in a test match and you lose.
05:44We felt like we exhausted everything.
05:46We felt like we were really good in the majority of those sessions.
05:49But unfortunately, the two sessions that we lost, we lost really, really badly.
05:52So, you know, we feel like we played four days of good cricket and we've lost that game in the end.
05:57So we're not going to get too down on it.
05:59But it's absolutely imperative that we stay focused on the whole goal of the five games and this four to go.
06:05And we just need to be at our best and give ourselves the best chance to win a test match here this week.
06:09Ryan, ever since the start of Australia Tour, given you all don't have a proper same bowling ball now,
06:16you have kind of juggled batting depth as it is trying to go for 20 wickets.
06:24Is it like after the last test, wickets still fell in the lower order?
06:30How close are you or have you discussed just going in with four tail enders and just going all out with three wickets?
06:37We have.
06:39And, you know, when you're 430 for three, it's absolutely fine.
06:43But when you're 200 for five, it's a very different ballgame.
06:45So in terms of, you know, managing the strategy there, we're looking at each bowler individually,
06:50feeling what we feel they can get wickets-wise.
06:53And then it's just trying to balance up and, you know, trying to calculate as best you can what the best chance of,
06:58A, getting into the test match, but like you say, you need 20 wickets.
07:01So the attacking party is obviously finding someone who can get wickets as well.
07:04And we grew up in with that.
07:06We don't stop talking about that.
07:07We're trying to figure it out.
07:09Last few.
07:10Ryan, A, you must have had a look at the wicket.
07:14What's the wicket like?
07:16And is there a possibility to play two spinners on this track?
07:21Yeah, it's a great question.
07:22There's a very strong chance of playing two spinners.
07:24It's just which two we play.
07:25And that goes back to the previous question about juggling the batting depth.
07:29All three spinners are bowling very nicely.
07:31Washi's batting very nicely.
07:33So it's just which combination do we go with all-rounder spinner or the out-and-out spinner.
07:36Then obviously you have to play the bowling all-rounder again.
07:39So there's so many different variables.
07:41The wicket's got 11 mils on at the moment.
07:4311 or 12.
07:44I can't remember which of the two.
07:45But it's quite grassy and patchy.
07:46It's quite dry underneath.
07:48But there's also rain forecast for Wednesday.
07:51So again, trying to weigh up the two options of how we want to go attacking-wise.
07:56But I'm pretty sure two spinners will play in this test.
07:59Last talk.
08:00Ryan, 1-1, anything is possible.
08:03We know how close the teams are because of Headingley was a really close test match.
08:07So 1-1, anything is possible.
08:082-0, it's a long way back.
08:10In that sense, is it tempting just to play Jasper and Quimirov because of the difference it might make to the stage of the sense of the series?
08:18It is.
08:19But we also feel we can go 1-1 or keep the score at 1-0 without Jasper.
08:23And then, again, that's putting the eggs in the back end of the series.
08:26We're going to need him at some stage as well.
08:28You've got to decide when you're going to play your strongest suits.
08:31And that's what I was talking about, about the weather and all that.
08:33But we feel that whatever we put out there, we can compete in this test match.
08:37And we came pretty close without Jasper in the second half.
08:40He didn't get any wickets.
08:42But you can't win the test series with just one bowler in any case.
08:45And the bowlers are very well aware that they need to chip in with wickets.
08:48So, sorry, I can't give you a more firm answer.
08:51But, yeah, we'll work out in the next 24 hours how we're going to manage Jasper.
08:57Final question.
08:58All right.
08:59Is there a chance of Dave getting a game here?
09:02Is there a chance of Dave getting a game here?
09:05There is.
09:06I think I've said yes to every single player.
09:08There is.
09:11You know, again, going back to the spin combination.
09:14If we are going to go to spinners,
09:16Osteep obviously provides a little bit more control.
09:19And you've got a left arm running in over the wickets.
09:22You know, if we do want to put our eggs in that basket.
09:24I don't know if you saw the seamers.
09:26They all had a good trot out today.
09:27We feel that they're all there and there about.
09:29And they're all eligible for selection.
09:31So, again, looking over the five series,
09:34how are we going to manage the five seamers that we do have,
09:37the out-and-out seamers.
09:38But Osteep is definitely in the selection mix for this test.
09:44Cheers.
09:45Thanks, sir.
09:47Happy birthday.
