00:00Four stages completed and four to go. We're over the halfway point in Giro d'Italia women for 2025.
00:12A relatively short stage in prospect for stage five. One that's built for the sprinters.
00:17Absolutely pan flat. No classified climbs along the way as the riders make their way through
00:23Veneto region, Merano, near Venice to Mont Celice. So far as the crow flies, the finishing circuit of 14.2 kilometers to be traversed
00:34and plenty of twists and turns along the way. What would turn out to be a dramatic day of racing.
00:41Marlon Roycer back in the pink jersey. 16 second advantage over the reigning champion Elisa Longaborgini starting the day.
00:48Cerro Gigante starting in third place. 34 seconds back. Antonia Niedermeyer, the white jersey, in fourth overall.
00:58When the flag came in, the early break establishing itself almost instantly.
01:03Five riders clear of the field, four from the host nation. Indeed four riders local to the region.
01:10And Francesca Brausse though was the German interloper for the Cerro Tisic squad,
01:14taking the intermediate sprint after 37 kilometers, ahead of Ragusa, Zantone and the rest.
01:23The main peloton, at one stage, more than three and a half minutes in arrears of a group working well up front.
01:31Heading from Venice down towards Mont Celice, the leader of the Queen of the Mountains classification,
01:38Serra Gigante at the back of the group, and just avoiding this one of several pile-ups on a stressful day for the main peloton.
01:52Up front, as the riders headed towards Mont Celice, the prospect of crosswinds proved tempting for the likes of the world champion,
02:01Lotto Capecchi and the SD Works pro-time squad, but it was Elisa Longoborgini, the Italian champion,
02:07reigning Giro d'Italia winner, who along with her UAE team, ADQ teammates, decided to go on the attack,
02:17finding a crosswind section that splits the peloton into several groups.
02:22Serra Gigante in the third group on the road that would eventually join up with the rest of the main peloton.
02:28Frustratingly for them, though, by that time, Marlon Roycer and others had managed to race clear to an expanding advantage.
02:38And Francesca Brausse, getting the news from her team, racing clear of the breakaway riders to try to fend them off for as long as possible.
02:46Eventually, Leanne Lippert and Marlon Roycer and others from that breakaway group would join up with the riders from the early move.
02:55Meanwhile, in the main peloton, the stress continued, the crashes appearing, and Georgia Baker among those that would get back up and into the fray.
03:06Safely in the move, up front of 21 riders, Aussie pre-event favourites, the European road race champion, Lorena Weavis,
03:17with her teammate, Lada Kopecki, the world champion, and indeed five riders, teammates of Lorena Weavis,
03:24available to her in the efforts to try and move clear of the peloton.
03:27Marlon Roycer, the overall race leader, Elisa Longaborghini, first and second starting the day,
03:33and looking to drive a wedge between themselves and the main peloton, including Sarah Giganti.
03:38As they arrive down to the finish line with 14.2 kilometres remaining,
03:44the advantage had stretched out north of a minute and continuing to expand.
03:49Frustrating moments for those left behind, including Giganti.
03:55Antonia Niedermeyer, starting the day fourth overall as well,
03:59was losing time to her main general classification rivals.
04:03No significant climbs along the day.
04:05But the wins had played a role in the sheer strength and power of the 21-rider group,
04:13including Katrina Olerud, 10th overall at the outset of the proceedings and looking to move up.
04:19And Evander Brechen as well, 6th overall after a challenging day in the mountains,
04:25and with a great opportunity to bounce back on a flat stage.
04:30Into the closing moments, and the ST Works Pro Time squad trying to set something up for Lorena Wiebes,
04:39their European champion, converting in fine style.
04:42Second victory in three days.
04:44Mariana Vos, the greatest of all time.
04:4655th podium finish for her in her visits to Giro d'Italia,
04:50but nothing that she or anyone could do about the sheer pace and power of Lorena Wiebes,
04:55who takes the victory ahead of Mariana Vos, Lippert, Kopecky and the rest.
05:00It's a fifth stage success for Lorena Wiebes.
05:03Marlon Reus remains 16 seconds ahead of Elisa Longa-Borghini,
05:07and Evander Brechen now up to third overall.
05:10Sarah Gigante slips to fifth.
05:12Lorena Wiebes now into the lead of the points classification,
05:15will wear the Maglia Rosa into stage six.
05:19And Sarah Gigante remains the leader of the mountains classification.
05:24Maglia Zura still on the shoulders of the Australian rider.
05:28Antonia Niedermeyer remains the leader of the young rider classification ahead of Isabella Holmgren.
