Former WBC Super Welterweight Champion Terry Norris takes a tune up bout against Armando Campas. Plus an interview with WBC Middleweight Champion Gerald McCellan on Showtime Boxing
Transcript
00:00Regained the title just like Juan Koji did.
00:07Now Koji has fought all over the world, but primarily
00:10represents only his second fight on American soil.
00:15On that note, let me bring in my partner, the fight doctor, Ferdi Pacheco.
00:19And Ferdi, has Koji hurt his career by not being showcased more in the USA?
00:24Well, I'll answer that in two parts. The first part is the boxing part.
00:27You can't argue with a guy that's 65-2-2.
00:29Has he hurt his boxing? How much better can he get?
00:31Of course, he could have benefited maybe with stronger competition,
00:34but with an awful record like that, we're talking about a top champion here.
00:38The other part of it is financial. There, he takes his shellacking.
00:41The money is up here, up north of the Rio Grande.
00:43So, financially, he needs to come up here and make the big bucks.
00:47Boxing, he's doing pretty good just where he's at.
00:49Yeah, it does not help his bank account.
00:51We turned out to our other partner, two-time world champion Bobby Chez.
00:54And Bobby, did the spotlight a blind Terry Norris or make him overconfident?
00:59I don't think it had anything to do with the spotlight or the public, Steve.
01:02You know what happened was, he was starting to walk through and destroy his opponents at will.
01:05And it gave him an offensive mind only.
01:07He started to forget about the boxing, forget about the defense and protecting himself.
01:11He just wanted to walk through everybody, be impressed and knock them out as he chased that pound-for-pound mythical title of Vesta Round.
01:18And I think right now, after talking with him, he's back to where he belongs.
01:21He wants to be the fighter, the same fighter to be Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:24Get back to that kind of boxing, that kind of power, that kind of patience.
01:27We'll see.
01:28Thank you for your comments and priorities before we begin our coverage of tonight's featured fight.
01:32Let's look back at undercard action from earlier this evening.
01:35We had a couple of undefeated fighters.
01:37As Lavander Johnson met Shombe Mitchell in a WBC lightweight championship elimination bout.
01:43The winner to meet WBC lightweight champ Miguel Angel Gonzalez of Mexico.
01:47Johnson rated number one Mitchell also the NABF lightweight champ ranked number two.
01:52Good early action by Mitchell who controlled the rounds early.
01:55But things began to turn as Johnson came on.
01:58You will see.
01:59And finally, in round number eight, Johnson will flatten Mitchell with a solid right hand to the face coming up right here.
02:08And referee Joe Cortez will have to count out the bloodied Mitchell.
02:15It was a knockout 133 of route eight.
02:19Lavander Johnson now 22 on one with 18 knockouts.
02:22Mitchell's first defeat now 31 and one.
02:24And Johnson now has a date with Miguel Angel Gonzalez for the WBC lightweight championship.
02:31Incidentally, two judges had Mitchell ahead 67, 66 through seven.
02:35The other judge had Johnson up 68 to 65.
02:39So here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, we are standing by for our featured fight.
02:44Featured fight which includes a potentially explosive world championship rematch.
02:48Our twin bill will feature the WBA junior welterweight championship between two time champ Juan Koji.
02:54And the number six rated challenger Etter Gonzalez.
02:57Also this evening, terrible Terry Norris returns to the ring after losing the WBC super welterweight title as he tunes up for his rematch with Simon Brown against Armando Compass.
03:11And we go behind the scenes into the dressing room of Terry Norris, now suddenly cast in the unfamiliar role as the number one contender rather than the champion.
03:20That's because back on December 18, 1993 in Puebla, Mexico, Terry Norris experienced a boxing nightmare.
03:27He was one of boxing's most highly-counted superstars.
03:39A legitimate contender to the title of best pound-for-pound fighter.
03:45But on December 18, in Puebla, Mexico, WBC super welterweight champion Terry Norris met the mandatory challenger Simon Brown with disastrous results.
03:57And then in the dressing room, I felt good. Everything was, you know, clicking.
04:01And once I got into the ring, it just didn't happen. You know, the boxing, it's an effort.
04:07And they go to us again, right here to the temple. Now, if he's in trouble, will he be able to survive?
04:14In this fight, I came back, you know, with my hands down low, I was caught with punches that I shouldn't have been caught with.
04:20But, you know, I was easily out-boxing, easily could I out-moving.
04:25But, um, I've watched the fights over time, too, and I keep telling myself, what was I doing?
04:30Oh, he got him! Terry Norris is down, and this might be it! Can he get up? He'll get up!
04:38It might be all over!
04:41That's it! It's over! Terry Norris has been this road! What an upset!
04:46Simon Brown is the new WBC super welterweight champion!
04:50It was my worst nightmare, and it became the reality that night. My worst nightmare.
04:55Did the nightmare and play for us pose two weaknesses in Norris' style,
05:00or was it merely a wake-up call for an overconfident champion?
05:04For since Norris beat John Mugabe in one round to win the WBC super welterweight title,
05:09he has won eight of his 12 defenses by knockout, five of them by the end of the fourth round.
05:16I wasn't boxing, I was just going in, you know, to kill my opponent to destroy it quickly,
05:21and taking the box out of it. But, um, you know, I'm trying to throw a round,
05:25and I'm going back to where I used to fight, and who I used to win, and that's boxing.
05:31The questions surrounding Terry Norris will ultimately be answered only in his rematch with Simon Brown.
05:37But before he can transform his worst nightmare into his greatest accomplishment,
05:42he must win the night.
05:44This is my first fight, and I'm glad I enjoyed it.
05:49I used to win Terry Norris, boxing, kick and roll, and, and then, and win the fight for Christmas.
06:04And yes, tonight, Terry Norris looks to get back on the right path,
06:07the path that would lead him back to the World Championship.
06:10As we bring the fight doctor back in, why in your estimation did Terry Norris lose to Simon Brown
06:15that faithful night in Mexico?
06:16I think three things is, uh, repeated, easy successes of his fights led him to believe
06:20all he had to do is go out there and knock out the guy.
06:22Secondly, he nearly arrived and suspects him that he was beginning to exhibit,
06:26now he's had so many hard fights, his skin is starting to go.
06:29And third, very simply, Simon Brown.
06:32Simon Brown is a top, top champion.
06:34They went at it, either one could have gone in that fight,
06:37and either one can go in May.
06:39So, for Norris, he's got to go back, and tonight is no easy fight.
06:42He's got to go back, he's got to relearn his lessons of boxing,
06:45and then devastating his opponent when he gets him in trouble.
06:48We'll see how much he's put into this fight based off his performance tonight.
06:53And Bobby Kez, is it important for Norris his confidence that he win impressively here tonight?
06:58Well, I think it's important for all fighters, when they win, it'll boost their confidence.
07:01And certainly how they win is how big the boost gets.
07:04But I think the boost here is not going to be Tentary Nars just walk in there and destroy Armando Campas.
07:09It's going to get back to the boxing, pay attention to his defensive P's and C's,
07:12and be that fighter to beat Sugar Ray Leonard.
07:14If he can put on that kind of performance, I think it'll add to his confidence
07:17toward that rematch with Simon Brown and May.
07:19All right, Bobby, and here is Norris' opponent,
07:2225-year-old Armando Campas pointing Bacabampo, Sonora, Mexico,
07:27the same state that produced Julio Cesar Chavez.
07:29Well, that's about where the similarity ends.
07:32Tapas who now lives in Tucson, Arizona,
07:34has a record of 19 wins, 10 losses, 2 draws with 11 KO.
07:59This year there's...
08:04Game with the
08:13Mike Zavler in Tucson.
08:18Yeah.
08:23Armando Compass, who has lost his last two fights and over his last eight bout, a rather
08:43unimpressive two five and one, including a ten-round decision defeat to Greg Helgen,
08:48who was tuning up for Julio Cesar Chavez. And now, we take a look at 26-year-old Terry Norris, born in Lubbock,
08:56Texas, fights out of Tampa, California. Norris, 36-4 with 22 knockouts, returns to the ring for the first time
09:03since losing his WVC Super Weatherweight title to the soft-spoken Simon Brown back in December.
09:18Do it.
09:33Do it.
09:36Do it.
10:44The fight cannot be saved by the bell as chefs in the final round.
10:50So coming up here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Terry Norris goes against Armando
10:55Compass in a super welterweight bout.
10:57We're set for the official introductions.
10:59So let's go up to our ring announcer, Jimmy.
11:01Armando Compass in a super welterweight bout.
11:03We're set for the official introductions.
11:04So let's go up to our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
11:09Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you.
11:13And we welcome you to the world's largest hotel, casino and theme park, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
11:20We have a big night of action coming your way, Global Warfare 2, brought to you by Don King Productions and the MGM Grand, along with Corona Beer.
11:31At this time, we present one of our featured bouts of the evening, a super welterweight special attraction scheduled for 10 rounds of boxing.
11:40This bout is sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the chairman is Dr. Elias Gunnam.
11:47Presenting to you the judges as appointed at ringside, we have Bill Beleggia, Bill Graham, and Al Siciliano.
11:55Introducing to you the referee in charge of this bout, he will be giving instructions after the introductions, Mitch Halpern.
12:03All right, fans, here we go.
12:05Introducing to you first, on my left, fighting out of the blue corner, he enters the ring wearing pink trunks and hailing from Bacobompo, Sonora, Mexico.
12:17He weighed in at 157 pounds, and his record includes 19 wins, 10 losses, 2 draws, with 11 wins coming by way of knockout.
12:29Please welcome Armando Masecas Campas.
12:35And his opponent across the ring, on my right, fighting out of the red corner in this 10-round super welterweight attraction.
12:46He is wearing white trunks with red trim, representing the first fighter squadron in Campo, California, by way of Lubbock, Texas.
12:55His weight, 154 pounds.
12:58His record, 36 wins, 4 losses, with 22 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:05Please welcome the former WBC super welterweight champion, and current WBC number one contender, introducing terrible Terry Norris.
13:16Once again, here's your referee in charge.
13:24Now to give instructions, Mitch Halpern.
13:27All right, gentlemen, we've already got over the instructions and the dresser.
13:29We want a good, clean fight.
13:30I want you to pay my commands at all times.
13:31Do you have any questions?
13:32All right, touch him up.
13:33Let's go.
13:33Touch him.
13:33Touch him.
13:33So here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, we're getting set for Terry Norris and Armando Campos.
13:43Norris told us his purpose tonight is to practice or relearn his skills and come out boxing.
13:49Meanwhile, his opponent, Armando Campos, says Norris catches a lot of right hands and has a suspect shin.
13:56And here we go.
13:57Round one, scheduled for 10.
13:59Terry Norris says he feels that opponents get up for him who may not get up for other fights, particularly Simon Brown.
14:07He did point out that, in his opinion, Brown used dirty tactics, like hitting in the back of the head in that fight in Mexico.
14:13The next fight will be different.
14:15He didn't think Brown was the hardest puncher he's faced.
14:18Norris threw out names like Jackson, Mugabe, and Curry as harder punches.
14:22The question is, has Norris been softened by those hard punches?
14:24Yeah, that is a question because all those guys he mentioned are really blockbuster punches.
14:29Mugabe, certainly Julian Jackson, certainly.
14:31I don't think it was that much as the overconfidence, as we pointed out, Bobby and I, at the beginning of the show, that success brings you.
14:38That continuous run in and knock somebody out.
14:41You know, he just forgets about defense.
14:43And now he's beginning to have a suspect shin.
14:45Well, prior to Simon Brown, all the fighters that he put that offensive attack out there, they couldn't combat it.
14:51Simon Brown could withstand it.
14:53Took the good shots and fired his own back, finding weaknesses.
14:56And this is something that fighters are always going to look for now.
14:58And, again, as magnificent as the human body is, all this wear and tear over the years has to take its toll somewhere.
15:04You get up some days, it just doesn't work right.
15:06But Norris, in the red and white striped trunk, said he abandoned his boxing skills against Simon Brown.
15:12In the past, he tried to go through people and was so used to the early knockout.
15:17From here on in, he says, instead of getting into a slugfest, if I take a good shot, I'll try to move around and clear my head.
15:24Well, so far, he is following Josejanovic's desires to box this first round.
15:30Just box it.
15:31See how it goes.
15:32If there's an opening, take it.
15:33And right now, he's being, he's completely different than the terrible Terry we've seen in the last five or six fights,
15:39where he just comes walking right through, disregarding any punches.
15:42Of course, remember, Troy Waters, not the hardest puncher, had him down.
15:46Right.
15:46He doesn't unload, now, the same amount of punishment early, but he's not absorbing any either.
15:50He's watching, he's boxing, he's moving.
15:51He's being defensively smart while still getting his points in and picking his spots.
15:55And this is smart for Terry Norris.
15:57Norris says, as long as I'm boxing, I can't be beaten.
16:01Now I know that even if I land my bomb, I still must stay with boxing and wait for my next opportunity.
16:09All that's well and good until you're in there with Simon Brown, he hits you real hard,
16:12and that little thing that makes you a champion clicks in and you start fighting.
16:16And that's what we're going to see May 7th if he gets past this tonight.
16:20And, Bobby, you made a point before the broadcast began,
16:23while he claims that Simon Brown was using rabbit punches, dirty tactics,
16:28what he failed to mention was he was dropped by a jab.
16:31Well, it was a shotgun jab that caught him right on the button, and it did drop him.
16:35That didn't hurt him near as much as some of the right hands to the temple on the side of the head.
16:38But I'll tell you what, I don't think that all of the punches were behind the head and back of the ear.
16:42I think some were right on the side, right on top of it, and that is technically a legal punch.
16:46Something else that I talked to Joe Sinovich and Orleanor Sr., his dad, about was
16:50he gets too prideful when he's hurt and wants to attack to show how big a man he is,
16:53and doesn't have to do that.
16:55As we head for the bell.
16:56What do you think that it's like you're supposed to do, okay?
17:08What you have to do, you have to move your upper body more when you go in.
17:12Don't go straight in like that, okay?
17:13All right.
17:15Set up the stadium, and I'll show you that.
17:18Put your money down the top of it, yeah.
17:20Come, come, come, okay?
17:22We're not right here to do that.
17:23Never lose yourself before, okay?
17:24Right at the end of the round, Norris maybe got the best shot of the entire round,
17:41because it wasn't right there.
17:42It wasn't much done.
17:43That's the right hand.
17:45You know, it wasn't much.
17:46It was what he was told and programmed to go out and feel my box,
17:50catch yourself back in that old mode that you were in.
17:52Well, he certainly did what the corner said.
17:54Now, let's see if it changes with this round.
17:57And right off the bat, we notice that Norris sits down between rounds,
18:00something he did not do against Simon Brown.
18:05Round two, scheduled for 10, super well-to-weight bout.
18:08The tune-up for Terry Norris,
18:10as he will go at it again in the rematch with Simon Brown-Mays 7.
18:13Good shot by Norris there that backs up Compass.
18:15A big left hook, and he didn't rush himself.
18:17He didn't come in and just start throwing caution to the wind again.
18:20He's trying to sit back and box, pick a shot, slip here, work nice,
18:23not get carried away, not try and destroy a fighter in the first or second round.
18:27But he certainly caught Kampas' attention.
18:29Kampas already is blinking from those shots.
18:31A little caution there from referee Mitch Halpern to Terry Norris.
18:36Get the punches up.
18:38Kampas has made a big jump in weight.
18:39He fought Greg Haugen at 145 and now he's 157.
18:44But he says he still feels natural at this weight and hasn't lost any power.
18:47Good little flick of a left hand by Norris that also got Kampas' attention.
18:51Kampas has taken too many of Norris' punches clean.
18:54As good as his chin is, and he does have a good chin,
18:56this is going to take its toll on him and wear him out and wear him down.
18:58And then Terry's going to, you know, just destroy him and finish him off.
19:01But what he's looking for, and he said he was going to try it,
19:04he has to get that right hand home to see if it's Norris' chin that's bad
19:07or if that was just a freak day.
19:09There's an uppercut by Terry Norris right on the button.
19:14And now Norris beginning to air it out.
19:18And it's only round two.
19:21Well, there's no sense in taking a chance once you've had your little round of boxing
19:25and he's putting a little bit harder punches.
19:27I think he'll escalate until he gets down to that destructo mode that he is
19:31when he walks right through you, when he gets his rhythm going on.
19:33He should be able to walk right through Kampas,
19:36who still can't figure out what to do with him.
19:38Kampas is looking at him and absorbing all punishment
19:40instead of throwing punches at him trying to get his attention.
19:43Kampas is being confused by the speed too,
19:57and he knows that each of those shots that lands hurts.
19:59So now he's got to worry about the speed, he's got to worry about getting hit.
20:02He's not allowing him to do anything that he wants to even try.
20:04And he's certainly not trying to stun or hurt Terry Norris here
20:10because he's almost afraid of the counterpunch.
20:13He's just not fighting liberally, I mean freely.
20:15He's not just letting it go.
20:17He's fighting a very cautious fight, like trying to keep from getting hurt.
20:20This is one of the things we've talked about over the years
20:23with guys that are tremendous offensive fighters.
20:26You have to pay such a toll to get to the chin to test it
20:28that sometimes you just don't get there.
20:32The loss to Brown broke a 15-fight winning streak with six straight knockouts.
20:37Norris 36-4 with 22 KOs.
20:47You know, he still looks like he's holding back, Bobby.
20:49Norris still looks like he's holding back, still looks like he, you know,
20:52they haven't turned him loose to do what he wants to do.
20:54He's still just experimenting and going slowly.
20:57So a very cautious Terry Norris at the end of round two.
21:02Coming up next, the WBA Junior Welderweight Championship.
21:05Here is the champion, Juan Koji, in his dressing room,
21:08making final preparations, doing a little shadow boxing.
21:11Koji, a South American legend, has made nine defenses over all of his title,
21:16which he won, lost, and then won again.
21:18He is tied for fourth all-time for most title defenses.
21:28Earlier in this round, we see how the vast difference of a fighter.
21:34Look at this uppercut.
21:35Oh, that's a thing of beauty by Norris.
21:37And that's a difference.
21:39Watch how he uses a combination, Bobby.
21:40Well, you know, he's got everything Terry does.
21:42He's got the jab, he's got the uppercuts, he's got the hooks,
21:44he's got the straight right hand, he's got good speed, he's got good power with them all,
21:47great leg movement.
21:48When he's boxing, he starts to do that little rock, starts to do that little bop,
21:50he's at his best.
21:51And we haven't seen that in a while.
21:53It's been a while.
21:53It's been a while since he got into that.
21:55Because he certainly didn't get into it with Simon.
21:57He was on the canvas before he ever started to bop in that fight.
22:01Round three scheduled for ten.
22:03Compass, 19-10-2 with 11 knockouts.
22:09He's from Mexico, lives in Tucson, Arizona.
22:12Turned pro in 1990, won seven of his first nine fights, five by KO,
22:16but since then, five, nine, and one.
22:19Good right hand there by Norris.
22:21He got through.
22:23Now, setting up the right with the jab is Terry Norris.
22:27Compass is not going to be able to depend on his chin for his entire fight.
22:30He's got to let some leather fly and take some chances.
22:32He's got to gamble here if he's going to have any chance at all winning this fight.
22:36Yeah, because right now, it looks like a gym workout where the corner says,
22:39well, all right, you tried to pace you, you tried boxing.
22:41Now, try the right hand.
22:42See if you can land the right hand.
22:43He came out and shot two right hands.
22:45One of them landed beautiful.
22:47Compass' best weapon is the right hand.
22:49He said his strategy against Norris is to react to what Norris brings,
22:53and he'd like to try to nail him on that chin that he feels is suspect.
22:57But we haven't seen any evidence of that quite yet.
23:02It may very well take a fighter with a little more talent.
23:05And chin-wise, he's there.
23:06He can absorb the punishment, but he doesn't have the offensive tools,
23:09as does the Simon Brown to come back and then land on Terry Norris
23:13when Terry Norris makes a mistake.
23:14That's a slip.
23:14No knockdown.
23:15The first time I saw a guy keep punching while his one knee was on the canvas.
23:21It's like the NFL here.
23:23Always a first on Showtime.
23:25Yes, the network of upsets.
23:28But do not look for one here on this point.
23:31Another accommodation by Terry Norris.
23:33Midway through the third, we saw Compass fight against Greg Haugen,
23:36and Haugen pretty much had his way with Compass as he was tuning up
23:39a few years back for Julio Cesar Chavez.
23:44Well, definitely he comes in here as an opponent.
23:47There's no question about that.
23:49I mean, they need to, they feel Norris needs a workout,
23:53and that's just what he's getting right here.
23:55Not only that, but they're going to fight May 7th.
23:57A big rematch.
23:58Highly anticipated.
23:59You're not going to take a fight here that could jeopardize that.
24:02You don't need to fight that tough, this close to that,
24:04about one where you could possibly get beat.
24:06Doesn't make good sense.
24:07It's getting to the point now, he's got a couple of good rounds in,
24:10where he's got to start thinking about putting the guy away,
24:12because bumping heads causes cuts, and that would destroy your thing.
24:16And so, you know, this is dangerous.
24:18You got to start thinking about putting this guy away.
24:20Terry Norris obsessed with Simon Brown.
24:23Says he had Simon hurt, that Brown's mouth was busted up.
24:27In fact, he had no mouthpiece in the second round.
24:29But he's got to take care of this business first,
24:32and get rid of confidence.
24:33Now, dancing around by Terry Norris.
24:35That's when he starts that little rock and roll rhythm,
24:37and he comes forward doing that.
24:38He's almost unbeatable.
24:39But can he always come forward against Simon Brown?
24:41That is yet to be determined.
24:43Yeah, that's what Brown did.
24:45He took away the dance.
24:46He took away his own rhythm.
24:47Right now, he's in his own rhythm.
24:50Final seconds, round three.
24:53He just said, let's listen.
25:23Let's let it go all out.
25:24He said, listen, he's slow.
25:27He's not particularly hurting you.
25:28Let's let it all play out.
25:29Either let's go out of here on the shield,
25:31or let's do some damage.
25:32He just sent him out, so let's see what this round brings.
25:39Here's that right hand by Norris.
25:41He's practicing away as he's doing.
25:43Look at that right hand.
25:43Right on the button.
25:45He is a good, good fighter.
25:46It's terrible Terry Norris.
25:47No question about that.
25:49He wants to box.
25:50He's a different fighter.
25:52He is a beautiful boxer and a beautiful combination boxer.
25:55Success with this hand.
25:57You knock everybody out.
25:58You figure, what's the sense of boxing?
25:59You can just go out there and knock these people out.
26:02Terry Norris at his best.
26:04Explosive, powerful, fast, well-disciplined.
26:06Throws a lot of punches.
26:08Excellent technician.
26:09Good counterpuncher.
26:11Very adaptable.
26:12He has a piercing jab and a wicked left hook and a steady right.
26:22Campus has a mind of his own.
26:23His corner told him, just go out there like a kamikaze
26:26and either knock this guy out or get knocked out.
26:29And Campus listened, but I don't think he paid attention.
26:32Yeah, it's all well and good for you in the corner, but not me.
26:35He's got Compass on the retreat once again.
26:37Terry Norris, the younger brother of WBA Cruiserweight Champion,
26:42Orlin Norris.
26:43Orlin Sr. in the corner of Terry.
26:45Former semi-pro.
26:51Wild miss on a backhand.
26:53That was an interesting punch.
26:55That was more of a just stay away from me.
26:57I know you're behind me.
26:58You're going to hit me now.
26:59That might work in the NBA, but not the WBA.
27:02I think he got Terry a little mad there.
27:03He got a little hostile.
27:04And he is upset.
27:07Wicked left hand by Terry Norris.
27:10Well, Compass just a few minutes ago actually landed two or three punches,
27:13which is the first time he's done anything in succession.
27:15But he's got to throw more if he's got a shot here.
27:18And Norris working to the face of Armando Compass.
27:22There's a big right hand by Norris.
27:26And Norris said earlier when we talked to him that he knows Compass has a good shin.
27:29He's not going to try and devastate him in one round or even two rounds.
27:32He's going to work and he said, I hit him enough, it'll weaken, and then he'll fall.
27:37This could be a matter of time here as Terry Norris continues to chop down Armando Compass.
27:44Heavy right hands as they clink.
27:52Norris flicking that shotgun jab as Bobby Ches likes to put it.
27:57Compass trying to come back, but to no avail.
27:59His combinations are just so crisp and accurate.
28:03And there it is.
28:04Great combination on cue.
28:09Well, he did listen to his corner.
28:11At least he's not going back to the corner standing up.
28:13This fight's over, gentlemen.
28:16And Compass is counted out by Mitch Halpern and Terry Norris.
28:20With a fourth round knockout here in Las Vegas over Armando Compass.
28:27His first fight after losing to Simon Brown as Compass remains on his back.
28:32Prior to the fight, Verdi and I were talking about just how long and how patient would he be.
28:36And I said, give him four rounds as opposed to one or two like usual.
28:39And we were pretty much right on the money.
28:41And Bobby and I didn't even drop our scorecards longer than five rounds.
28:45I mean, it's going to get any longer than five.
28:47Bob said four.
28:48And that's where it was, four.
28:50So a tune-up for Terry Norris.
28:53His wife alongside.
28:54Terry goes to 37-4 with 23 knockouts.
28:57So now it's, look out, Simon Brown, May the 7th, right back here at the MGM Grand.
29:07Terrible Terry Norris.
29:08He just seemed smooth like butter.
29:10Who got his nickname not from his fighting days, but from his mom as a youngster.
29:13Was always getting in trouble.
29:15Well, he got Armando Compass in all kinds of trouble here in round four.
29:19And put him down on the canvas with a wicked combination.
29:23No way.
29:27Let's take a look at when Terrible Terry decides that's enough of this.
29:32That right hand did it.
29:33I don't think he needed any more than that.
29:36He just keeps landing them so clean, so fresh.
29:39Terry can punch.
29:40Do you take this look?
29:41Yeah, you know, you see it.
29:42And it's right on the button.
29:44Two jabs set it up.
29:45His hands were down.
29:46He got a couple more grazing blows on the way down.
29:47But that was a clean, right on the button right hand.
29:51Yeah, one more look just to satisfy us at that is what you call a perfect right hand.
29:55That is a perfect right hand.
29:56He's leaning into it.
29:57He's right.
29:58His body's all the way in there.
29:59And it's not, you can't keep taking those kind of punches and expect to continue.
30:05The fans reacting on the big screens as Terry Norris hammered away with that right hand.
30:10So Terry Norris goes to 37-4 with 23 knockouts.
30:22He'll return to the first fighter squadron in Campo, California now to get ready for Simon Brown.
30:28Let's get the official time from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
30:31Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time here at the MGM Grand Garden of 2 minutes, 19 seconds.
30:45In round number four, the winner by way of knockout, Terrible Terry Norris.
30:53So Terrible Terry Norris gaining confidence as he readies for the rematch with Simon Brown.
31:06May 7th on pay-per-view right here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
31:10Coming up next, Juan Koji will defend his WBA Junior Welterweight Championship against Eder Gonzalez
31:20in a rematch between the two fine South Americans.
31:23That will be upcoming right here at the MGM Grand.
31:28Well, let's get some post-fight reaction from our last bout and set it up to the fight doctor,
31:34Ferdy Pacheco in the ring.
31:36Oh, we're so proud of him this evening.
31:38Yes.
31:38All right.
31:39Here is Terrible Terry and Not King.
31:42May 7th!
31:43And you are, yesterday we talked, you said you were going to take your time, you were going to box,
31:49you were going to perfect several things.
31:51Exactly what you said took place.
31:53Yeah, I just came out of the box, you know, and do what I normally do, you know,
31:57and instead of trying to knock him out, I just, you know, put a little skills to it
32:00and just boxed him out, boxed him out, moved him.
32:02All right, I want to tell you that right before that, in the corner, right before that last one,
32:06his corner said, don't come back to the corner, go out there, do or die.
32:09Either you knock him out or he knocks you out.
32:11So they were right, they knocked him out.
32:13Yeah, they pushed him out there and pushed him into a couple of combinations that dropped him.
32:18Well, the right hand was a thing of beauty.
32:19It was two left hands and then a right hand.
32:21It was a picture-perfect right hand, couldn't have been thrown any better.
32:23So are you satisfied with this night's work?
32:25Um, I'm really, I'm satisfied, but I got a, you know, I got a job to do on May 7th,
32:30and that's all, that's my life is, uh, depending on, that's the only thing I want to do is win that time.
32:34All right, we've got, we've got the monitor here, and I want to show you the, the, uh, two jabs
32:38and then what, a picture-perfect right hand.
32:40There's one, there's two, right down the pike.
32:42Whole body, whole shoulder behind it.
32:44Everything just like they teach you in the gym.
32:47Jabs, blinded him, and right hand caught him.
32:48Yep, that, that was, that's about as perfect as you can get, a combination as you can get,
32:54and now it's back to all business, because you've got Simon Brown to worry about.
32:58That's the only thing that's on my mind, Simon Brown.
33:00I want my title back, and Simon Brown better be a hundred percent, because I'm coming for my title.
33:05Well, later on this evening, we'll talk to Don about what's coming up May 7th,
33:08but right now, let's go back to Steve.
33:12Thank you very much, Bertie, here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
33:16We want to tell you about an upcoming pay-per-view event
33:18that is coming up next weekend on Showtime Event Television.
33:24If you consider yourself a fight fan at all,
33:27then do not miss the Brawl in Montreal.
33:31Six world champions square off in the biggest, most dramatic triple crown in the history of kickboxing.
33:36Rick the Jet Rufus brings his formidable knockout talents to the legendary Iceman,
33:41Montreal's hometown hero, Johnny Terrio.
33:45PKC heavyweight champ Dennis Alexio hopes to terminate Dick the Destroyer Kimber.
33:51And Juan the Ghost Warrior Torres goes up against the wily veteran Paul Vizio.
33:56It's a night the fight world will be talking about for years to come,
33:59so be there when history is made.
34:01At the Brawl in Montreal, Karate Mania 8,
34:04Saturday, March 26th at 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 Pacific, live on pay-per-view.
34:11Yes, Karate Mania 8 coming to Showtime Event Television,
34:14Saturday, March the 26th.
34:16Meanwhile, on May 7th, right here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas,
34:20a boxing extravaganza, the rematches on pay-per-view.
34:24We'll see you next time.
34:46Yes, the rematch is taking place right here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, the 7th of May on pay-per-view.
35:04And on the subject of that Power Pack May 7th card, Bobby Jays is alongside one of the participants.
35:11Bobby?
35:12Thank you, Steve.
35:12I'm here with Gerald McFarlane, the WBC middleweight champion of the world.
35:15And Gerald, the past two title defenses, not too much to offer us.
35:19Can we look for the same type of fight with the rematch of Julian Jackson, or are you going to have another one-two quick round knockouts?
35:25Well, the rematch of Julian will be prepared.
35:27I know I was the first time training hard, the best play of my life.
35:31I'm a homie fighter now.
35:32I believe it or not, I'm a starving fighter.
35:34But the rematch of Julian will be action-packed like it was the first time.
35:38I'm going to come out.
35:39Victoria's going to chop less than five rounds each time.
35:42Now, in the last show we did a few weeks ago with the title defense,
35:44we saw that Emanuel Stewart wasn't in your corner.
35:46There's always rumors you're here in boxing.
35:47Tell us what the situation is with Emanuel.
35:49Is he still your trainer, your manager?
35:50What's the situation?
35:51Where have the problems started?
35:53Well, now on paper, Emanuel Stewart, my manager and trainer, but he won't show up at all.
35:57You know, he wants to show up a week before the fight out of a seven-week training period.
36:02That's not fair to me, to other fighters, or to other coaches.
36:05So, you know, it's like, well, if he show up this time, the day I walk in the gym,
36:10then he'll be my manager and trainer.
36:11If he don't do it this time, then I'll just say, well, I'm going to start keeping it quiet on TV.
36:16He's getting up on TV, and now he's saying, well, he didn't have time for me.
36:19I didn't know he said that.
36:20So I feel like this, you know, if he's going to say that he didn't have time,
36:23then I don't have time for me, you know, because, believe it or not, I would do better without him.
36:27So, now, would this be a big distraction for you if you had a substituted trainer before the big rematch of the game, Jack?
36:32Can you still get yourself just as focused without him, and who would you use?
36:36I'll give a man a lot of credit.
36:37You know, he knows what he's doing in the ring, and, believe it or not, I would want him.
36:40And it won't distract me because when the bell rings, when I look back, he's not there in nowhere.
36:45He's on the bench.
36:46So it won't distract me.
36:47I'll see my training people, me, Willie Brown, a few sparring partners I have, and a few assistant partners I have.
36:53So we appreciate your time taking the talk to us.
36:55We're going to go back to the ringside and see you at Albert.
36:57All right, thank you very much, Bobby.
36:58A little controversy.
