00:30Five EU member states bordering the Mediterranean Sea have raised concerns about a migration deal
00:36currently under negotiation between France and the United Kingdom.
00:41Italy, Spain, Greece, Malta and Cyprus sent a joint letter to the European Commission
00:46to express their doubts about the agreement.
00:50The British and French governments are discussing a one-for-one pilot scheme
00:55allowing the UK to return irregular migrants who crossed the Channel in small boats to France.
01:01In exchange, the UK would accept migrants currently in France who are seeking family reunification in Britain.
01:11But the possible consequence would be that migrants rejected by the UK could end up being sent by France
01:18to other southern European states.
01:21As under EU law, irregular migrants must apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter.
01:28The European Commission acknowledged the receipt of the letter.
01:34We are in contact with the French and the UK authorities to ensure the necessary clarifications are made
01:39and we are working with France and the UK, as well as other member states,
01:43to support solutions that are compatible with the spirit and the letter of EU law.
01:48In May, the EU and the UK signed a common understanding for cooperation in several fields,
01:54including tackling irregular migration.
01:56Santos Cerdán, who is the former aide of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez,
02:05was detained without bail on Monday.
02:08He is being investigated along with the former transport minister,
02:12José Luis Ábalos, and his aide, Goldo García,
02:15for receiving money for awarding public contracts.
02:19It comes as part of a corruption inquiry that could derail Sánchez's minority government.
02:23Cerdán's case is the latest and arguably the most serious in a series of scandals.
02:29The prime minister issued a public apology earlier this month when Cerdán resigned from office.
02:35He did so in order to deflect calls from his political opponents for a snap election.
02:40Cerdán has denied the allegations.
02:46Major heat waves across southern Europe have pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius
02:51as local authorities issued fresh warnings against the risk of wildfires.
02:56Severe heat was recorded in Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal,
03:00with locals and tourists taking shelter from the sweltering conditions.
03:05Two-thirds of Portugal were on high alert on Sunday for extreme heat and wildfires.
03:11In Italy, a few regions were planning to ban some outdoor work activities
03:26during the hottest hours of the day.
03:29While in Spain, locals and tourists were desperately trying to keep cool this weekend
03:34as the country sizzled in temperatures as high as 42 degrees Celsius in the southern city of Sevilla.
03:41Experts link the rising frequency and intensity of heat waves to climate change,
04:03warning that such extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common across Europe's southern region.
04:11Both the Hungarian government and the opposition are trying to interpret Saturday's Budapest Pride March,
04:19which was attended by an unprecedented crowd, in their own interests.
04:24According to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the event was not a spontaneous civic initiative,
04:29but instead was ordered by Brussels and carried out by quote-unquote their puppet politicians.
04:36Although more than 100,000 people took part in the march despite a ban imposed by the government,
04:41and pro-government press is claiming it as a success for the prime minister.
04:45They believe that the opposition has aligned itself with pride,
04:48and claim polls indicate the majority in Hungary is opposed to this.
04:53An analyst at Research Institute Political Capital, however,
04:56believes the mass demonstration created an awkward political situation for Orbán's party, Fidesz.
05:32By managing to mobilize such a huge crowd,
05:35Orbán rendered himself as the king of pride in Europe.
05:38That is what Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisa party, said.
05:42And according to Budapest's mayor, Hungary revealed a different side this weekend,
05:47one of a country of solidarity, freedom and Europe.
05:50Dozens of Israeli settlers set fires, vandalized military vehicles,
06:00and attacked soldiers at a military base in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Sunday night,
06:05the military has said.
06:07In a response to the violence, the military used stun grenades against the settlers.
06:13Israel's defense minister, Israel Gatz,
06:16vowed to eradicate violence, quote-unquote, from the root,
06:20Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Sunday's attack,
06:24and Far-right Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir has also offered a condemnation,
06:29a rare move, as he has often defended Jewish settlers accused of similar crimes.
06:36Violence by extremist settlers has risen alongside growing tensions in the region.
06:41On Wednesday, three Palestinians were killed when Israeli settlers stormed a village near Ramallah.
06:46The West Bank is home to some three million Palestinians living under seemingly open-ended Israeli military rule
06:53and 500,000 Jewish settlers.
06:58Can the Axiom 4 space mission inspire a new generation of astronauts?
07:03In spite of the massive political changes that occurred in Poland,
07:33and since then, the countries still cannot independently send someone to space.
07:39This is namely because of its lack of a spaceport or rockets.
07:43This is why joining the European Space Agency helped the country to take a big step forward.
07:49To jest jedna z najlepszych inwestycji o najwyższej stopie zwrotu, o jakiej możemy w ogóle marzyć.
07:57Yet, for this project to have meaning, it does require additional investments.
08:01W momencie, w którym ten fakt zaopiekujemy, ten fakt opowiemy, dopracujemy do niego,
08:12czy dostosujemy i system edukacji, i system nauki, i sam przemysł kosmiczny,
08:35Such projects require thoughtful cooperation between private and public sectors.
08:40Jako Polska potrzebujemy zrozumieć troszeczkę lepiej, czego potrzebuje rząd,
08:45czego potrzebuje po prostu Rzeczpospolita, żebyśmy mogli te technologie rozwijać i dostarczać.
08:52For experts, this means that in 20 years' time, more people could be graduating from engineering studies.
08:58Myślę, że będziemy mieli do czynienia z czymś podobnym do efektu Apollo,
09:00które miało miejsce w Stanach Zjednoczonych w latach 60-tych i 70-tych.
09:06I może trochę na wydarz, ale to będzie taki efekt Sławosza.
09:10The Axiom 4 mission is expected to last for two weeks.
09:14The battle to reach Europe's 2040 climate targets has begun.
09:26On Wednesday, the European Commission is due to present its proposal for a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions.
09:33To take the bloc towards carbon neutrality by 2050,
09:37France led an initial offensive at last week's European Summit, setting out its framework.
09:42The word flexibility has appeared repeatedly in the context of climate targets for the European Union.
10:10The Commission hopes this will bring Europe's capitals onsite.
10:15We need some clear orientation around 2040,
10:18and the reduction of 90% of our emissions by 2040 is a clear goal.
10:25Then how we can combine the different pieces, the eventual flexibilities, is the thing to be discussed.
10:32But we're working hard, and we will table our proposal in the coming days.
10:37For environmental NGOs, granting flexibility is precisely what could end up jeopardizing European efforts to battle climate change.
10:44The one that everyone talks about here in Brazil is about international credits.
10:49So this is basically the fact that the EU and member states could pay other countries outside the EU
10:55to basically cut their greenhouse gas emissions.
10:58And then this will be included in the 90% of cuts of greenhouse gas emissions within the EU borders.
11:06That's a very big issue because this will divert investments for industry or for people, municipalities outside the EU.
11:13And this will be more expensive and will have less positive impact on the people and industry in the EU.
11:19Paris is asking for more time to negotiate and should be able to count on the support of Budapest and Warsaw.
11:26However, other member states such as Germany, Spain, Finland and Denmark fully support the 90% CO2 reduction target.
