00:00NATO leaders on Wednesday confirmed their commitment to more than double defense spending by 2035,
00:07banding words like Crucial, Momentos and Quantum Leap.
00:11Members said that they were united against profound security challenges,
00:16singling out the long-term threat posed by Russia and terrorism.
00:21The resolutions came even as U.S. President Donald Trump faced questions at the summit
00:26about the Ukraine wars, something he described as being hard for him to solve.
00:32Because it's more difficult than people would have any idea, Vladimir Putin has been more difficult.
00:40Frankly, I had some problems with Zelensky, you may have read about him, and it's been more difficult than other wars.
00:46By the end of the summit, allies in a joint statement committed to spending 3.5% of GDP
00:52on core defense spending to buy military hardware and maintain troops.
00:58However, their statements did not include a condemnation of Russia's invasion of Ukraine as it had a year ago.
01:05Trump, who had always castigated European allies for not spending enough on their own defense,
01:11hailed the decision taken at the summit in The Hague.
01:14The U.S. President described it as a big win for Europe and Western civilization.
01:22On the sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague,
01:25High Representative of the European Union Kayakala spoke to Euronews about the text messages
01:30sent by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to U.S. President Donald Trump
01:33in which he praised him on the strikes on Iran as well as increased defense spending in Europe.
01:39Mark Rutte is speaking Trump.
01:41I mean, I think, you know, he's speaking the language that President Trump definitely understands
01:49and he needs to get this across.
01:53I think it's very important that everybody is doing this 5% and agreeing to this.
01:59President Trump has been the one who has been calling for this.
02:04We definitely have listened to President Trump and everybody is doing more.
02:09When asked how it will be ensured that the new spending levels are achieved,
02:14Kalas spoke about implementing a well-defined milestone process.
02:18The last time when we had the pledge in 2014, it was for 2024,
02:23but there wasn't really a clear path how to get there.
02:26Now you have, you know, milestones on the way to check whether everybody is in the right trajectory.
02:33And when it comes to defense spending, it's also very much defined what goes into that.
02:38Kalas was also asked about the EU-Israel Association Agreement
02:41after an internal review found indications of human right breaches by the Israeli military in Gaza.
02:47We agreed to put the pressure on Israel to really have a dialogue
02:52and we already agreed how to improve the situation.
02:56So step-by-step approach to really push them so that the situation would be better.
03:03Seeing these things, people shot in the line of getting flour and food, I think it's untenable.
03:11As we have done the Article 2 review, it's clear that the next step is to take the measures.
03:17So, you know, we also have the pressure points, you know, clearly,
03:22that if you don't improve the situation and you're still in breach of the Article 2,
03:26then we can move on with the different measures that come from the Association Agreement.
03:33Iran has backed a bill to suspend its cooperation with the UN's nuclear watchdog
03:40for not condemning the US strikes on its nuclear plants, according to local media.
03:46On Sunday, the US launched multiple attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.
03:50Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohamed Behi-Galibaf, said the International Atomic Energy Agency,
03:58or IAEA, puts its international credibility up for auction as it refuses to condemn the attack.
04:06If successful, the legislation would make any external oversight of the country's nuclear program
04:12much more difficult.
04:14The measure still requires approval from Iran's unelected Guardian Council to take effect.
04:20Meanwhile, chief of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, said he has already written to Iran
04:26to discuss resuming inspections of their nuclear facilities.
04:30Iran has insisted it will continue its nuclear program, which it says is peaceful.
04:40Seven Israeli soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunus
04:45when an explosive device attached to their armored vehicle detonated.
04:49That is according to an Israeli military spokesperson.
04:52They pulled forces and went to the point.
04:55They took attempts to separate the planes, but for no success.
04:58It is about a severe event that is still a threat.
05:02It comes a day after Gaza health officials reported at least 44 people were killed when Israeli forces
05:15and drones opened fire towards a crowd of Palestinians.
05:19They were waiting for aid in separate incidents in southern and central Gaza on Tuesday.
05:24Since the start of Israel's operation against Hamas, which started after an attack by the militant group
05:31in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel says more than 860 of its soldiers have been killed.
05:39On the other hand, the health ministry in Gaza says the Israeli offensive has killed more than 56,000 Palestinians.
05:45102 French citizens were evacuated from Israel on Tuesday aboard a French military aircraft.
05:54The passengers arrived in the Cypriot city of Larnaca, where they're spending the night before being flown out to the French capital, Paris, on Wednesday.
06:03Some of the passengers had been stranded in Israel for more than two weeks after the Israel-Iran war unexpectedly broke out.
06:09The French ambassador to Cyprus added that more French evacuees are set to arrive in Cyprus on Wednesday.
06:16Meanwhile, Indonesia says it has successfully evacuated 96 of its nationals from Iran.
06:22The foreign ministry says 93 civilians and three embassy staff left the country through land routes via Azerbaijan.
06:28Eleven Indonesians arrived in the capital, Jakarta, on a Turkish Airlines flight on Tuesday night.
06:34Twenty-nine others are expected to arrive on Wednesday aboard three flights from Azerbaijan.
06:38Jakarta says 386 Indonesian citizens reside in Iran, many of them students, and all of whom it plans to evacuate in the coming days.
06:48Evacuations from Iran became increasingly challenging after multiple planned flights were cancelled following the closure of Qatari airspace.
06:56In a stunning political upset, Democratic Socialist Zohran Memdani declared victory in New York City's mayoral primary on Tuesday.
07:09With most ballots counted, the 33-year-old held a significant lead over former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was the favorite to win.
07:18Cuomo has since conceded defeat in the race.
07:21The result is seen as a litmus test for the Democratic Party, pitting a young progressive against an establishment moderate.
07:31Memdani, backed by figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, campaigned on free public transport and new taxes on the wealthy.
07:39Cuomo ran on a promise to restore order in the city, but was hampered by a sexual harassment scandal that forced his resignation as governor in 2021.
07:47A general election to decide the final outcome will be held in November, though this week's primary is widely seen as the race that effectively decides who will be the mayor.
07:59While Cuomo concedes the primary, he told the New York Times he's still considering running in November's general election as an independent.
08:07Memdani is now on track to become the city's first Muslim and Indian-American man.
08:13Activists in the Italian city of Venice are claiming victory after the location of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' wedding to Lauren Sanchez was changed.
08:28The wedding, initially built for the city center, triggered protests in the historic sinking city, with demonstrators aiming to obstruct access to Venice's famed canals.
08:41Greenpeace's huge banner on St. Mark's Square this week galvanized the protest, with the group saying that lifestyles filled by the arrogance of a few billionaires devastate the planet.
08:52While activists belonging to the No Space for Bezos group have said they do not have an issue with the marriage itself, the common feeling is that Venice is being privatized and exploited.
09:06Organizers have moved the lavish wedding venue from the 14th century Grande Scuola Misericordia in central Venice to a famous shipyard on the outskirts of Venice called the Arsenale.
09:19Jeff Bezos, one of the world's richest men and TV presenter, Lauren Sanchez's wedding extravaganza, kicks off in Venice this Thursday with a ceremony scheduled to take place on Saturday.
09:39The European controversy continues over whether or not hand luggage should be free in the cabin when traveling by air.
09:46The European Parliament's Transport Committee adopted its position on Tuesday.
09:51For MEPs, air passengers should have the right to take two personal items with them, at no extra charge.
09:58To reach a compromise, however, they had to agree on the size of the luggage.
10:01What we found as a solution is to shrink in the size of that hand luggage, because it's more or less with the size of the personal item.
10:13But yes, the proposal of the Parliament is to be included in the price of the ticket.
10:18You can have your backpack or a lady purse, which is already the case now.
10:23You can have a personal item and a small hand luggage, which should be the total amount of 100 centimeters in length, height and depth.
10:32The European Consumers' Organization welcomed the vote, which was adopted by a very large majority.
10:40The organization believes that this vote is perfectly in line with the Court of Justice ruling that hand luggage of a reasonable size cannot be subject to additional charges.
10:50For its part, Airlines for Europe, which represents 17 airlines, believes that MEPs have taken advantage of this vote to add, in a roundabout way, amendments that deprive passengers of their choice and their ability to decide which services they want to pay for.
11:08The meaning of the MEP's vote runs counter to the decision taken earlier this month by the 27 transport ministers.
11:15The member states propose that airlines should be able to charge for hand luggage when baggage allowances are clearly displayed.
11:23The inter-institutional battle continues.
