So hello and here we are with the lovely Rob Hughes and tell me then how do you
00:05
feel to be a winner? Yeah really excited I'm you know we started this company
00:09
because we wanted more people to be thinking understanding and kind of
00:12
questioning technology for young kids so to get the recognition that this is a
00:16
problem that this is an opportunity to actually build something much better and
00:20
to help a lot more kids to thrive is yeah it's wild it's good. So tell me a
00:24
little bit then about someone who doesn't really understand like AI and all that
00:27
technology explain a little bit about what your company is and what it's doing.
00:31
So basically we're trying to redefine like and re-imagine how children and
00:36
families use technology so instead of just using like screens and technologies
00:40
being like a digital babysitter that just sits there and like keeps your kid
00:44
quiet we actually want to use building we're building technology to make them
00:47
curious get them interested and what that means for us is we were building
00:50
something called Tandem it's in the App Store you can download it and what it
00:53
does is it really safely and in a really sort of child-friendly way allows
00:57
them to create stories fact books or play activities that resonate with them
01:02
the things they're interested in that maybe reflect their culture where they
01:05
live where they're growing up and the idea of that is to make things that
01:08
actually then they want to read they want to play with and then for parents it
01:12
takes away a bit the friction of reading there's no reading battle there's
01:15
no like oh we've got to read this dusty book that's actually a bit dog-eared and
01:17
about some people who look nothing like us you know so it's about making that all
01:21
easier for parents too and then while they're reading it we also track their
01:25
interaction if you want to like in a sort of Fitbit for fun we call it so it
01:29
tracks the reading it tracks your child's development over time and that means
01:33
that the books that they're generating all those play activities are always at
01:36
the right level for them so it sort of calibrates to that child and for us
01:40
that's like that's a very human centered way of using AI so the AI actually you
01:45
know it's designed with children in mind and everything's optimizing for more
01:49
human interaction more conversations like this not conversations like this and so so
01:54
that's yeah that's that's it in a nutshell so how did you then as a company get
01:57
involved in the innovation challenge yes so we so as a company we're registered
02:01
in London but we've also got a local base here in the Isle of Man and so we're
02:06
really interested in kind of drawing on the best bits of everywhere we both come
02:10
from our co-founders will come from academic backgrounds so we try and borrow the
02:13
good bits of academia and we and and the sort of urgency of a startup but for us
02:18
the innovation awards were just an obvious place to sort of say okay here's what
02:22
we're doing get some support get some challenge get some introductions and yeah
02:26
hopefully winning that's worked out so and then finally what are your hopes then
02:31
for the future of your app so yeah I mean there's two things one is that in the
02:35
short term we're raising fundraising we're funding and we're pretty looking
02:39
pretty good on that but we're aiming to over the summer close a pre-seed
02:41
funding round so that we can really build our team both in the in the UK and the
02:46
Isle of Man and then really actually do some marketing so really we've been very sort of a
02:51
little bit stealthy today but we want to get it out there build iterate the
02:55
product and test that impact and really see how many more how many more millions
02:59
words can we get being read with kids and then eventually we've got some big big
03:03
visions around how we can kind of build a whole set of different medium for kids
03:07
to interact with technology that aren't just the staring at screens yeah well
03:11
good luck and congratulations again thank you so much
