“Not for it” K’taka Minister opposes longer work hours; promises talks with unions, stakeholders

Bengaluru, June 23, 2025 (ANI): On a proposal to increase work hours in Karnataka from nine to 10 hours daily, Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad said that he will consult the stakeholders and unions to take their opinion as this is a proposal from Central Government. "To me, right now it doesn't look good, as people are already working for nine hours. The new proposal suggests increasing work hours from nine to 10 hours daily, with a cap of 48 hours in a week. I will call every stakeholder, unions and talk to them and take their opinions as the proposal has come from central govt. Prima facie, I am not for it," said Santosh Lad.

00:13and one hour is for the free time to have lunch or dinner, whatever it might be.

00:17So one hour free period chhodke, they are working for eight hours.

00:20So the new rule, which the proposal, which they made, it's not a rule,

00:23it's a new proposal is that, why should not,

00:26the enhancement has to be done from nine to ten hours.

00:28It means nine hours working, one hour will be free period.

00:31And they want to restrict in a week this 48 hours.

00:34It's very tricky.

00:35So if you ask me on a Prima Fesi, you know, I really, I'm not for it.

00:40But definitely since the proposal has come from the central government itself,

00:44I would write to, I would love to talk to, call every stakeholder in this aspect.

00:48And I'll speak to the trade union also, which already my officials, my government has done,

00:52and as well as my secretaries have taken care of it.

00:53But still, I would call everybody, ask their opinion,

00:56in case if it comes to positive, in case people want it very badly,

01:01then I myself will approach CM and as well as all our cabinet colleagues,

01:04then only we'll take a call.

01:05But on Prima Fesi, if you see, no, I'm not for it.
